Inneract Project: Empowering the Next Generation of Black and Brown Designers
Inneract Project is a non-profit organization that aims to empower the next generation of black and brown designers. The organization was founded in 2004 by Maurice Woods, a graphic designer who saw the need for more diversity in the design industry. Inneract Project provides design education and mentorship to underrepresented youth in order to help them pursue careers in design.
The mission of Inneract Project is to create opportunities for young people from diverse backgrounds to learn about design, develop their skills, and build their portfolios. The organization offers a range of programs that are designed to meet the needs of students at different stages of their education.
One of Inneract Project's flagship programs is its Design Academy, which provides free after-school classes for middle school students. The program teaches students about graphic design, typography, branding, and other aspects of visual communication. Students also have the opportunity to work on real-world projects and receive feedback from professional designers.
Another program offered by Inneract Project is its College Bound program, which helps high school students prepare for college-level design courses. The program includes workshops on portfolio development, college applications, financial aid, and other topics relevant to pursuing higher education.
In addition to these programs, Inneract Project also offers mentorship opportunities through its Professional Mentorship Program. This program pairs students with professional designers who provide guidance on career development and portfolio building.
Inneract Project has had a significant impact on the lives of many young people over the years. Its alumni have gone on to attend some of the top art schools in the country and have landed jobs at major companies such as Google, Facebook, Nike, Apple among others.
The work done by Inneract project has been recognized by numerous organizations including AIGA (American Institute for Graphic Arts), Adobe Creative Cloud Fund among others . In 2018 they were awarded $100k grant from Google.org to expand their programs and reach more students.
