About Indigenous environmental network

The Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1990. It is an alliance of grassroots Indigenous Peoples whose mission is to protect the sacredness of Mother Earth from contamination and exploitation by strengthening, maintaining, and respecting traditional teachings and natural laws. The organization has been at the forefront of environmental justice movements for over three decades.

The IEN works towards creating sustainable communities by promoting renewable energy sources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and advocating for policies that protect the environment. The organization also focuses on protecting Indigenous lands, waters, cultures, and sacred sites from destruction caused by extractive industries such as mining, oil drilling, fracking, and pipeline construction.

One of the key objectives of IEN is to empower Indigenous communities to take control over their own resources through education and advocacy. The organization provides training programs on renewable energy technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines to help communities become self-sufficient in terms of energy production. Additionally, IEN advocates for policies that support community-based solutions rather than corporate-driven ones.

The IEN has been involved in several high-profile campaigns over the years. One such campaign was against the Keystone XL pipeline project which would have transported tar sands oil from Canada through several US states to refineries on the Gulf Coast. The project was eventually cancelled due to widespread opposition led by organizations like IEN.

Another notable campaign led by IEN was against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) which threatened water sources for millions of people along its route while also violating treaty rights held by Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. Despite facing brutal repression from law enforcement agencies during protests against DAPL at Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota in 2016-17; indigenous activists with support from allies were able to halt construction temporarily before it resumed under Trump administration's executive order but still faces legal challenges today.

In addition to its advocacy work around environmental issues affecting indigenous peoples globally; IEN also works to promote social justice and human rights. The organization has been involved in campaigns against police brutality, mass incarceration, and other forms of systemic oppression that disproportionately affect Indigenous communities.

Overall, the Indigenous Environmental Network is a vital organization that plays a crucial role in protecting the environment and promoting social justice for Indigenous Peoples. Its work is essential in ensuring that future generations inherit a healthy planet where traditional teachings and natural laws are respected.
