I just wanted to take a moment to thank Dr. Higgins for all the help with my beloved Starre. I went to another vet when my 14 year old Yorkie turned violently ill on August 5,2019. She wound up staying the night, and in the morning I picked her up to take her to the Humane Society, where she and my other yorkie had both had prior surgeries and spays and unmatched care. My dog was on her death bed and Dr. Higgins made her as comfortable as she could before she released her to me to take her home to pass with her family. Unfortunately, my Starre passed away within the hour in my arms on the drive home. I was devastated. A few days later I received a card in the mail from Dr. Higgins sending condolences. She is an angel, to think of myself and Starre when they at the Humane Society and so busy, and at times understaffed. Thank you so much Dr. Higgins and the staff at the Humane Society of NY. If anyone reading this hasn t done so already- please take the time to donate to this wonderful organization. They really are angels in human form.

I came here last June for my pet hedgehog who wasn't eating, I had a completely different experience from the other reviewers on here but to be fair I went to see their exotic pet specialist. I called once, and they answered, i made an appointment, and when I came in my wait time was about 5 mins. The exotic specialist was phenomenal!! He answered all my questions especially since it's my first hedgehog and even gave me his card to email him if I had an concerns. His staff loved my hedgie and took turns passing her around and petting her (with my permission of course). I just made my second appointment with no issues.

I was n still am sooo emotionally wreck when my Baby was dying, i had to put him to sleep, n they were too busy worrying about how much $$ i could spend..im disabled n on SSI.. I have no ashes to remember him by, cause i did not have $150.00 for the personal cremation. So my Baby was put down literally like a dog in a Group cremation! And that i am not proud of..im so sorry Baby ...i now have a permanent place to remember him By. HS should b a little more lean when it comes to our dying babies with parents with low income or no income at all. At that cruical moment...we r not thinking of $$ signs, we're thinking of our Babies...SIP Baby, xoxo

The Humane Society was the best place I found after encountering bad vets. The staff is professional and compassionate and will definitely will recommend their services. Hence, I feel an excellent satisfaction with the way my little fluffy kitty was cared for.

I live in New Jersey and they were the only ones that helped our baby when no one else would because I didn t have the money . Our baby has since passend on but had it not been for their help I wouldn t have known what to do . They work with you and with your financial situation and they listen . Joe was great, the doctor was also great ., My daughter and I appreciate absolutely everything they did for our baby ! Thank you again to them !

My dog was sick and the humane society took blood, stool sample and found nothing. Was advised to change her diet which I did and she's fine now. The blood work and medicine and all other fees were a bit high for me, I was expecting a low price for a low income location. Overall I would take my dog there if I couldn't get to another location.

To the Director and staff of the Humane Society:

To the Director and staff of the Humane Society:

I am truly grateful for what I experienced today.

For over 2 hours I unsuccessfully tried to get my cat into her carrier. I called to say that I might be late. I received several kind responses that I
could bring her at 12pm (the appointment was originally for 9 am).

After many tries, I gave up. Joe called me, and said that he would speak to the director about a partial refund. I received a very generous amount
back.

I never expected this; I understand your policy and it is extremely fair
considering the very low fees.

All I can say is that I am deeply moved by your action. In addition, everyone to whom I spoke either in person or by phone was extremely gracious and understanding.

With love and great appreciation,
Linda A.Schreiber Patient: 84504

We recently adopted our dog from the Humane Society of New York. I cannot say enough positive things about the people, the service, the level of care and professionalism conducted by everyone involved in our adoption. Bonnie and Sandra are dog experts and really took time to get to know us and the dog to ensure we were a good match.

We could not have gotten a better pooch anywhere. We feel so lucky to have been chosen as his forever home. We are all so delighted and he has completed our family.

Many thanks to the staff at the Humane Society. I would highly recommend talking with them if you are looking to adopt an animal. You will not be disappointed.

This is the Human Society. This is a no frill & low cost animal center. I think I paid less than $200 to have my puppy neutered & chipped. You'll need to book an appointment and pay for any and all procedures in advance. My puppy is doing well.

The person in the front desk today is highly nasty. I m asking several questions about getting my friend be treated here. She tells me if you don t agree with the policy s go somewhere else she didn t give what I had to say I just wanted to clarify some questions I had. I wanted to know if it was necessary to do it or no. She void out what I said said if you don t like it part of our policy than find other veterinary. Whoever in the front desk today needs to fix there attitude because this isn t the way to run customer service.
Well if you don t like your job or care for animals she shouldn t be working for this place. The way she speaks to people reflects what this hospital is and stands for.

Had a dental procedure for my 10yr old Fox Terrier done here. They were quick and treated my pooch with great care. In the end she had 9 extractions. They gave me all the medications and information to take care of her post operation. Waiting area is kinda small tho they keep the line moving. It did smell like cats the first time i went but was better surgery day. My only issue was the phone call wait time. Was honestly on the line for 45min. Well worth the wait. Will definitely come back should my Foxy needs and medical attention. Thanks all.

Please note I'm humane society biased as I volunteered as well as helped foster a few cats. I also adopted my current cat from the humane society. If you need a vet or help with your dog or cat there is no place better to go than the humane society. That goes for anywhere whether it be NY/NJ or even Michigan the humane society will take care of your companion animal at a significantly reduced cost in comparison to any other private vet. Definitely use them if you need em!!!

Dr Cavanagh has treated both my cats for almost 15 years. As far as I'm concerned their is no better vet in NY. I was concerned when he moved to the Humane society. However I trust his judgement without question.
I made an apt for one of my cats to be seen there by Dr Cavanagh .He received the same high quality care that he received his whole life. The clinic was clean and professional. All the staff were very caring and professional .
I can't speak highly enough about Dr Cavanagh or the Humane society.

Friendly doctor's and assistants
We were seen at our appointment time. Very crowded with many fur babies. I recommend people go with their sick pets. It takes a while to get appointments but walk ins will be seen.

I'm sure they do good work here. But my time spent there was miserable. The place was crowded, my dog was in hell - waiting in a pet traveling bag for 3 hours - and there was little sympathy, empathy or assistance from the staff. Communication was non-existant. After waiting for many hours I never even got to see the doctor. Granted I was 15 minutes late but still... Even if Jane Goodall worked here I don't think I would go back. Torture. But that was just my experience. For other people this place is a miracle - they do indeed provide supposedly low-cost quality care for animals in this expensive city. Why they feel they need to treat people so poorly is beyond me. Last thing : their payment policies are sadistic and overly punitive. How what they do payment-wise is legal is dumb-founding.

My sister house was in foreclosure and she was forced to relocate to different state as a result of the foreclosure. She had to moved into her daughter's residence and left destitute without place of her own. She has three cats. ( mother and daughter & Larry). She was unable to care for the cats or take them with her. As a result, we took the cats to THSOFNY. for a better loving home. They took the cats with open arms putting all my sisters concerns to rest with tears in her eyes we left knowing that was our best choice for the cats.. Thank you again to the HSNY from the bottom of our hearts. VL & NL.

Best place I could have ever taken them. There is a wait but that's because they are really busy saving pets.

Full disclosure...I never actually brought my pet ...

Full disclosure...I never actually brought my pet to them but the experience of setting up the appointment alone was enough warning for me not to bring my dogs there. To set up an appointment you are subjected to a lengthy recorded message which basically says they won't even discuss scheduling an appointment unless you pay with a credit card in advance. Once they get paid then they will discuss when you can bring your pet in. Not a word of concern for your pet. Just threats of forfeiting your payment if you need to change the appointment for any reason whatsoever. Even if you have to reschedule you have to pay for the original appointment AND the new one. I've had Oncologists and surgeons who had a less strict policy. Any vet whose main priority is getting paid over the well being of my dog does not deserve my business.

The best staff. Truly healing Drs who care for your pets, not some clinic trying to charge you for every test under the sun. I've been everywhere and in every borough...I keep coming back because the Drs here truly LOVE what they do.

The Humane Society requires a lot of patience with its policies and facilities. Making an appointment requires a long lead time, long waits for someone to take your call, and payment in advance. The appointments cannot be cancelled and refunded. The waiting room is chaotic, the vets are overbooked, and the staff is stressed. To speak to your vet, you must email the general address and wait a day for a call back. The vets do not have individual email addresses or voice mail. All that said, the quality of care is as good as I've gotten anywhere and the prices are literally a fraction of the going rates in NYC. Tip: try for a 1:30 appointment. The schedule starts over after a lunch break and you'll be seen on time. Also, Dr. Yaron Schmid is highly recommended.

I called at 9 am and was told to call back at 9:30 am when the appointment desk opened. I called at exactly 9:30 am and have been on hold for over one hour. I called (on another phone) and the receptionist assured me that there was indeed someone at the desk and I should continue to hold. This is ridiculous. My puppy is sick and was just here 6 days ago. I understand long wait times, but please answer the phone!

We adopted an adult cat from here a few months ago and were extremely pleased with the experience. The staff put in a lot of effort to help us find exactly what we were looking for in a feline friend. The process was pretty easy and they were willing to answer any questions we had. We LOVE our new cat and are so happy to have her.

Wow this place is a gem. They surpass all of my expectations. The humane society was so attentive and caring. My pet Naya ( 11yo female pit bull) had a deep long laceration on her leg(blood vessels tendon and all) the previous animal hospital I went to said she was going to die and I feel they didn't properly care for her and for a price that was unobtainable. Luckily I was able to meet Director Sandra, Doctor Higgins and The receptionist( wish I got her name) they came to the rescue. This humane society of New York is very compassionate, professional and caring, your pet is in good hands here. Ps oh yeah don t forget to bring your pets collar and leash, I totally did but they helped me with one :)

Under the new guidelines of texting they completely ignored my pleas of arranging an appointment to put my beloved down since she was diagnosed with cancer and her quality of life diminished significantly and was suffering. Even called a week or so after my text when I was now able to leave a VM in the mailbox linked to pressing zero...and again through my anguish and tears NO ONE returned my efforts in connecting with them.

Once upon a time, I had such respect and reverence for the care and attention they provided to it's patient's and their humans. I cannot at this current time agree with what I once believed. Their lack of contacting me looks like a deliberate dismissive approach to not tending to my desperate pleas. There is no justification or excuse for this as far as I can assess. SUPER DISAPPOINTED in whoever has allowed the ball to drop.

Do not adopt a pet here. A disrespectful lady name...

Do not adopt a pet here. A disrespectful lady named Bonnie will condescendingly talk down to you and explain that you are not suitable to adopt a pet because my wife and I work 9-5 and couldn't possibly have enough time to care for an animal. We wanted to adopt a cat and we weren't allowed to even see the cats? It was the strangest encounter I have ever had and the adoption manager must want to keep all the cats to herself and not let anyone adopt them. Definitely do NOT donate or contribute to this place - The only logical conclusion I came up with to explain this weird scenario is that the adoption center is some time of Ponzi scheme that accepts donations and there are no actual pets up for adoption

We went to the animal care center in East Harlem and adopted a beautiful 4 month old cat the same day. Do not waste your time at Humane Society of New York.
