This is where I adopted my precious dog! Kept clean and not smelly.
It's a NO-KILL shelter, that deserves 5 stars by itself.
Great atmosphere. Have adopted a cat here, as well as used them to neuter one. Great people.
Best adoption center, no kill, great service, I personally get most of not all of my animals from here. Love it!
The facility is clean and bright. The animals are housed in unique rooms that have themes. The staff are polite and knowledgeable.
Such a great place to stop by and pet the animals. So glad they got their new building.
Cute kittens , easy to adopt!
Easy process, would recommend !
Friendliest staff and lots of fun animals to play with!
One puppy was aggressive and it took a wrong turn but the rest of it was so fun!! I did get a headache, obv don t recommend if you have allergies
Everyone was friendly, and the animals were happy. A great experience!
Just a wonderful place and people. Glad we have such a Great facility in Lynchburg.
Beautiful facility but the smell upon entering is something to be warned about. Otherwise it would be 5 stars.
Some dogs dont seem to be friendliest things around but great facility.
The staff was incredibly rude and makes me wonder if they treat humans this way how do they treat the animals
They were very accommodating and informative with my Lola
I've got one of my dogs from the Lynchburg Humane Society. A rescue beagle cocker spaniel mix. A good place that do everything they can with what they have.
Very clean and animal friendly. I found my precious dog there. The staff is great!
When I adopted my cat from this shelter, I asked for all paperwork they had on him and was told that they didn t have anything beyond the basics. After taking my cat home, he had once a month aggression episodes, leaving puncture wounds and bruising (see the pictures). This happened even with medication and behavior intervention for over a year! When I went back to the shelter one day with my pants literally torn to shreds and demanded help and more information on his history, they pulled out thorough notes about his previous owner s surrender!! He was feral on the streets, brought to the shelter, in a home for 2 years where he was mistreated and surrendered due to extreme aggression that left their daughter HOSPITALIZED! Granted, these people mistreated the cat, BUT the shelter KNEW his history. Whether they thought it was the previous owners faults or not, they still withheld the information from me. I love Mufasa (my cat) but my body is scarred and shredded. He was supposed to be my Emotional Support animal and instead caused significant trauma to me. I pay over $50 a month just in medication on top of his other expenses and he has a behavior intervention plan. He still attacks (unprovoked) every few months because he has been diagnosed with PTSD and bipolar disorder. I m an animal person, which is why I ve fought for him, but this shelter MAJORLY neglected their responsibility and duty to inform me about the animal I was adopting. I was straight up lied to that they didn t have any information on him more than what was on his sheet (his name, gender, age, eye color, and breed...). They just wanted him to be adopted and didn t care what the cost was to the adopter. Even with improvement, my cat is a threat to me and my future family and children. If I was given the information they had on him, I honestly wouldn t have adopted my cat. I pray that no one else suffers from the negligence of this shelter.
Love this Humane Society-- maybe too much. I get an animal almost every time I go here because the atmosphere is so nice and clean. Great staff and volunteers
We visited the Humane Society today, Free Cat Friday. We wanted to adopt 2 young cats. We were told that we could not adopt the cats because the cats were not going to live "inside" full time. We live on 4.7 acres and our other cat loves his outside adventures and freedom. It is so sad that they would want their cats to live in cages rather then have forever homes. We have two dogs who are rescues and 1 cat. I'm sorry that there are 2 cute cats living in cages when they could be here with us at our home. It's very sad.
The staff is wonderful and the facility is beautiful!
They are great there. I use them for any of my cremations of my pets.
A wonderful staff. Very helpful and wonderful with the animals. Extremely clean and neat.
The new building is beautiful. The animals seem to be in good hands. Volunteers are awesome. They have many pitbulls and many kittens. Good place to just spend some time with animals.
Friendly staff, nice setup for the animals, especially the cats, fairly clean
Sometimes it's hard to get someone to help you with animals.
Absolutely AMAZING experience here! I had been emailing Lindsey about potentially adopting a dog. We set up a time for myself and my family to meet the pup, and I can not give enough praise. The facility was so clean and welcoming, the dogs had their own rooms, NOT cages. And the two women who worked with us couldn t have been more amazing. We ended up adopting our newest family member, and now our family is complete! I absolutely recommend this location to anyone and everyone who is thinking about adding a furry family member! Thank you, LHS!
This place is amazing it is a really nice shelter one of my favortie I have been to
I leave my heart each time I visit there. A really well run facility.
We have rescued two dogs from LHS and continue to visit regularly with our family. A wonderful place for animals until they find their forever home.
They put sincere effort in trying to find a lost, dumped kitten at Walmart. Thank you for your help.
I can't think of better things to say..endgame, they are awesome.
Great place to adopt animals. Workers are so nice. The animals are so cute. And they let you have the opportunity to walk a dog if you would like. I love the ideas for the cat rooms I think they are so nice. It makes the animals feel welcome and safe and that's why I like this shelter. I like it because I know they won't hurt or neglect the animals like other places do. They let you volunteer to help around with the cats and dogs. If you have a big heart for animals I recommend you visit this place because as soon as you walk in the doors of this place, it will put a smile on your face even if you're the sadest person in the world. This place has changed my complete outlook on animals and animal shelters.
A Lynchburg gem. Definitely should check this place out.
Spacious well kept dog runs, cat living room, doggie suites. It makes me happy to see that they treat dogs and cats that need love, so well.
Amazing space and very caring workers! Love our new furrrriend.
Friendly helpful stuff. We just adopted our first dog
I'm trying to find me a cute little dog so I went over looking, I haven't found any as of yet but I will be going back to look
The staff is wonderful, very knowledgeable, and friendly.
Clean facility and very helpful staff, I would recommend getting your next pet from this organization.
Having helped at the old shelter from 93 to 2002 as an adoption counselor, socializer and transporter i give it a 5 for finally being no kill, open areas for the cats and individual kennels for the dogs. However the staff whether it be student workers/young ones are very rude with their sarcastic remarks and talking down to you. Telling me they cant take a sweet kitten that had been thrown from a car that it would bother and make the others wild ,or agreeing to foster it and would pay for a capstar pill so fleas wouldnt come into your home, and being told no and just take cat back and re dump it is not very helpful or calming. When walking a dog and not being told the dog doesnt like other dogs till after you get pushed down cause it got scared of another in its path is not good either. For the animals, 5 stars, for the staff, a 3.
Went in with my girlfriend to look at adopting a kitten. We found one we wanted to adopt after playimg with her for a good 30 minutes. put her back in her cage to talk to the volunteers about adopting only to have another group come up HOLDING the cat in the lobby and they began the process for adopting the cat for them and blew us off. lack of communication between members. And didnt seem like they cared who they let adopt as long as they get that $75. What a joke. I will say that the new building is amazing, and I feel that the animals are happy with they're surroundings.
Amazing shelter! If you need a new friend, please take a beautiful drive to Lynchburg! Kevin is going to his FUREVER HOME!
We adopted our dog here last summer. You're able to come in and walk around to see the dogs and cats without appointments. They often have free cat day. Staff are very kind and helpful
My daughter spent a few hours here with her Girl Scout troop. They spent their time playing with kittens and visiting a few different stations. She had a great time and already wants to go back. This was my first time in the new building. It is super nice! It smells pretty strongly like urine, but I guess that's to be expected when you have that many animals in one place.
Very helpful in finding us a pet to match our needs
Incredibly clean with the nicest people working there.
My children and I love the new humane society! The set-up is amazing compared to the previous LHS.
It's okay. The place has quite a few animals to adopt but needs a litte tlc on the cleaning. A good place to get pet food if u have multiple pets tho
We adopted our cat from this Humane Society. They were helpful in providing information for us. We drove a really long way to pick up our animal and it would have been nice for them to extend their time just a little bit (we arrived over an hour before closing, but could not adopt the same day) but all in all we were happy with the facility.
Love that it is a no kill facility. However upon visiting a week or so ago, we were overwhelmed the smell of urine and feces in the cat areas. Almost everyone that walking in one of the rooms covered their nose, made some comment about the smell or turned around and walked out. I u Bertrand that areas are over crowded but I believe it was more than just the litter boxes, maybe the furniture, toys, or bedding? Not a great selling point to encourage people to adopt. Staff and volunteers were super friendly.
I love this facility. Over the past 6 months I have had occasion to visit the shelter and on the surface I am quite impressed. This past spring I took an older sick outdoor cat there not quite sure whether they would euthanize said cat or try to save her. They said they were a no kill facility. 2 thumbs up. So I left her there a few months passed and I thought of the cat but didn't call. Well time passed to the tune of a few months. When randomly a small kitten ran up to me while I stood on my porch. She looked like she needed more help than I could give her. Immediately we took the kitten out to the SPCA to drop her off
While there I found out that the first cat I had taken had made a full recovery and had been adopted. So awesome.
The main reason I didn't provide 5 stars is because the upkeep of the kennel areas for the dogs isn't very well maintained. It's sad enough to see animals in shelters but they should have a clean living space. I hated seeing how much feces and urine were in their cages. It's hard to believe that they get enough outside time with the number of "accidents" they have.
Every time I have to make myself leave without bringing home an animal- the kids love to go visit
Best place ever! I met my bestfriend, and first cat, Bean there. (Renamed hehe.) I wholeheartedly urge you to save a life! Adopting is one of the greatest things you can do for a pet!
This was my first time to the new humane society. We ended up adopting.
Very clean and a great place to adopt. We got a kitty and soon maybe a puppy!!
The staff here is very friendly and helpful and compassionate about the animals and passionate about what they do. Their new executive director, Beth, is amazing and the first time I met her I was bringing my 21 year old cat in for end-of-life and she was so caring and compassionate and cry right along with me and she really has a good heart as does everyone I have met their so far. And I love their motto adopt before you shop because there are a lot of animals that need loving homes.
I had visited this facility on several occasions with my young daughter for service work and always enjoyed it. I live in Forest about 10 miles from Lynchburg. Friday at noon a young German Shepard mix puppy showed up on our front porch- no collar and looking haggard. We have an older Boxer who does not play well with others so we tried to chase this dog away but he would not leave. He was still there Saturday morning. We fed him 2 bowls of food. We decided to take him to SPCA since he had a great temperament and would be easy to adopt out. Bedford SPCA is closed on the weekends so we took him to this Lynchburg facility. Before we took him in my husband went in and asked if they would take him. A staff member said yes. After carrying the puppy in we went through a 45 minute ordeal of excuses of why they wouldn't take him. 1. We live in Bedford. 2. They don't have room 3. Can we just keep him for one more night. 4. Wait while we call our supervisor . 5. Which staff member told you we would take him? What did she look like? Meanwhile my 8 year old is crying because of the stress we are all going through trying to demonstrate to her how to do the right thing. We were finally "allowed" to leave the stray puppy at a facility that was established to take care of homeless animals. Very bad experience!!
The animals are amazing and seem to be treated well. Only issue is I want to take them all home
Greatest animal shelter ever!! You have just got to see it. It's that simple.
