My father in law was put on Hospice on New Year's Eve. He passed away February 10th. The staff was nice, the nurses, social worker, bath aide. When he began to rapidly decline in what would be his final days, his son and I thought Hospice would be more present. Perhaps offer volunteers to come sit with my father in law to provide respite. The nurse just told us to sleep in shifts. When my father in law did pass last Monday, the nurse came to pronounce him, left, and we have not heard anything further. I specifically and multiple times stated I wanted bereavement counseling for my husband and I. I was told that is something they typically offer after death. I thought Hospice would call or follow up, but there has been nothing.
When the Hospice staff was present they were informative and compassionate. I just expected support after his passing... It was an exceedingly traumatic experience to be alone with our loved one as he died a horrific death.
