The only reason that this rating is not 5 stars is because the appointment was 30 minutes late. That said, the receptionist advised me about 10 minutes after my time slot that the doctor was running late and asked if I had other appointments that would be affected. Once the appointment began, the vet tech and the doctor spent a lot of time with us.
Hometown Veterinary Clinic has been the second home for my pets since I was referred to Dr. Smith in 2001. All three of my doggies have been cared for by her or one of her veterinarians. I have always been pleased and thankful for the services she provided for each of them. In fact, I have never even considered making a change. Dr. Smith is a well educated veterinarian and extremely conscientious in the diagnosis and treatment decisions she makes for our pets. Also, she makes each pet a friend. But she doesn't stop there, she has been so kind and thoughtful whenever I had to lose a pet. She truly cares about everyone. Her staff is efficient and friendly. Sophie, my curent pet, visits Dr. Smith's boarding facility, is always anxious to get there and leaves happy and looking good (Jesse is an excellent groomer). Hometown Veterinary Clinic has my highest recommendation.
All you can ask for in a Vet and then some. Great team from Top to Bottom, always warm, comforting, and pleasant, Great with the fur babies and I know they are receiving the best care around.
I've only known this vet for just over a year, but I can't explain how much the Doctor and staff are extremely attentive and respectful. I had to make uncomfortable visits, but the staff went above and beyond in every way.
I took my dogs here for their check ups and vaccinations, as we are new to the area, and this place came recommended. I was happy with the visit, so we decided to board our dogs there for five days while my husband and I went on a trip. Well, they clearly didn't follow the instructions I left for feeding them, because my one dog went in at 19 lbs. and came back to me after only five days at 22 lbs., and the other one has been sick with god knows what, and can't stop pooping. My husband called to file a complaint, and we got a lot of lip service apologies, but they refused to refund us any portion or offer a future service at a discount. These people have $500 of my money, so apparently they don't feel the need to try to rectify their mistakes. I'm so mad and upset. We will not be going back to these people. And clearly, they don't care much about their customers or the actual animals.

We've been taking our cats to Hometown for years, and have been very happy with them. All of the vets there have been consistently caring, gentle, and kind with our animals, especially Dr Smith. The techs and other staff are nice too, though I have to agree with another reviewer that Kim can be a bit brusque on the phone. The bottom line is that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Hometown to anyone.

Yesterday was my first time visiting (just switched vets), and one thing I can say, everyone was SUPER friendly! It was a pleasant surprise, especially given how people seem to be in such a bad mood these days. The hoops you have to jump through at businesses due to COVID can get pretty irritating, but Hometown handled theirs well. I parked in the lot, called the number on the door, and they were out in maybe a minute to pick up the dog. I can't speak for bedside manner since I was waiting in the car the whole time, but as friendly as my vet was when she brought the dog back out, I'm sure it was just fine.
I will be excited to have a more normal vet experience once the world is a little more normal, but given the circumstances, I'm very pleased with Hometown so far.

Claimed Hometown as my new vet after they took care of me when my 4-legged best friend of 8 years was passing away suddenly. They remained in contact post-passing (during COVID shutdown) and sent me a card with his paw print on it. It was touching to see that level of attentiveness and care when I was not even their client except for that one hour back in March. Not that my other vet was not accommodating, they are just to far away. I decided to take my other 4-legged companion to them and they treated him with respect and care, even though he did like all the treats, however, didn't care for all the probing, but he still enjoyed all the attention.
Dr. Brittany Sholes was amazing! We took our pup in for her first checkup since adopting her and we all had a great experience. Everyone at the clinic clearly has a deep love for animals. When we visited, there was no wait, we were seen promptly, and though we had some tests and x-rays done, it was an affordable visit (especially when compared to other vets in the area.) So happy to have been recommended to this vet!

Have been seeing Dr. Smith for 20+ years. Love her and her staff. She is so great with our dogs and always listens. Is always open to questions and new ways of trying to help the animal (e.g. thru chiropractic care). Will continue to go to Dr. Smith as long as I have animals and she's in business. (During covid it's tough not going in with our dog but I know Dr. Smith will treat him as if he were her own so we have no worries)

I've been taking our cats to Hometown Vet for a long time, and my wife since she moved in, and we've always been very impressed with the professional staff and excellent vets they have there; and they are also very helpful with referrals to specialists. When discussing my pets' issues, I always feel like the vets talk to me on my level; when I can go deeper in the details, they're happy to explain them to that level. The staff are kind and treat the animals with a lot of compassion and respect. We'll be going back there as long as we live in the area.
My kiddo's (2 Boston Terriers) regular Doc was out and we worked with one of the Relief Vets. She was great! To the point, excellent suggestions and of course, dealt decisively with what I brought my girl BT for, an ongoing skin condition outbreak. I really feel blessed to have found HVC.
The staff and doctors here are excellent. They're professional and knowledgeable. It's a relatively small staff, but if you go regularly they'll get to know you and your pet's concerns and needs. They've advised me on a number of issues. Not to take away from other doctors there, but Dr. Smith has been excellent to my pets. The only drawback I experienced here was appointment availability for short notice issues. Aside form that, it's hard to find better care.
Dr. Carlson truly is a fantastic vet. We just moved here with our 3 and a half year old cat, who is slightly overweight. Dr Carlson gave us a detailed diet plan for him and went as far as to call us personally with an individualized plan just for him. We also just recently adopted a kitten from a shelter, who was suffering from giardia and a severe upper respiratory infection, and Dr Carlson spent soo much time explaining his care and condition and putting my worries at ease! If you want your fur babies to be treated with the best care possible, this is the place to be!!

My girlfriend rescued a sick 5 week old kitten and she called all around to different vets and animal hospitals and Hometown was the ONLY place willing to get her in so last minute. She ended up having a super gnarly respiratory infection and everyone at Hometown took care of our baby. She is now 7.5 months and is the silliest, funniest, loviest, most playful big girl ever <3
I've never had a vet as patient as Dr. Sholes. She lets me blather on and never seems to be trying to rush away, even though I'm pretty obnoxious and also ask to hear about all the details of my cat's treatment. Everyone at the office has been loving and kind toward my shy rescue--she'll never love going to the vet (barring some miracle), but at least she gets to be around a team that tries to minimize the stress and that takes good care of her. I'm grateful to have found this clinic.
First and last time I ll take my dog there, he was feeling ill and diagnosed him with dry eye . A week went by with medication they prescribed and he looked worse. Took him somewhere else immediately and they took me he had something else more serious than dry eye. Test for moisture level came back good. Only thing I wonder if they even checked inside he mouth because my dog will not let you look inside his mouth. I got charged 300 dollars and my pet is In worst condition than I took him and they still want to charge for bringing him back. I wonder how well these people are doing their jobs.
Truly thankful for the entire staff! They are thorough and detailed with the explanation of the visit. They are patient and able to address all of our questions and concerns along the way to appease us as new puppy owners. My 7 year old cat needed a tooth extracted. The doctor suggested a complete dental at the same time, since the cat would be under anesthesia. I agreed, and my pet was treated. The whole process was easy, with a quick drop off in the morning, followed by a pick up in early afternoon. The post-op instructions were clear, the medication provided relieved pain, and I was encouraged to call with any concerns. The facility is clean and bright, and the staff is friendly and obviously animal lovers. The doctor was calm in her demeanor and clear with her instructions and explanation of the procedure. I will only use this vet from now on.
This clinic was great at first, very knowledgeable staff, flexible when problems and emergencies arose, however I did end up switching to another veterinary hospital after my most recent visit. I took my dog in and requested that they clip his nails, a standard procedure. However, when I got home from my appointment I noticed blood all over my carpet, clothes, car and bathroom. I was very confused, until I saw that my dog was bleeding profusely from his right front paw. They clipped his nail down past the nub and cut a chunk out of his paw pad. I understand my dog isn t the easiest to deal with when getting his nails clipped, however nobody communicated anything to me regarding the incident. I called the office to ask what had happened and the girl who answered the phone had the audacity to say maybe he caught it on something in the car in the most apathetic tone. She didn t even apologize or seem to care. I told her to have the vet call me ASAP. After the vet called, she didn t seem to show much concern either (at least she apologized, although it didn t sound genuine at all). They offered to have him come back in so they could take a look, however I declined and told them that I don t trust that he s properly cared for in their possession and I d rather take him elsewhere. Not once did they follow-up after the incident to see how he s doing/healing, they didn t try to remedy the situation whatsoever nor did they even offer a refund for the nail clipping. I immediately cancelled all of my upcoming appointments and demanded a refund and thankfully Tammy at the front desk was accommodating (she s very sweet and helpful). I m not doubting the veterinarian s knowledge nor their ability to do their jobs, however I will say that this clinic will nickel and dime you for all they can. I learned from my new veterinarian that many of the boosters they scheduled for my dog were unnecessary and weren t needed every 6 months and that a year was more than sufficient and appropriate. Overall, their lack of empathy, poor communication, unethical practices really left a bad taste in my mouth. Shame on this clinic and I would look elsewhere before coming here. Proceed with caution.
I am extremely satisfied with Hometown Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Smith is the absolute best! Her staff is fully qualified. They all have a genuine love for animals. The care for all our furry pets is very apparent whenever you have to visit the clinic.

I've done the research. Hometown Vet might not be the cheapest, but they are the best. I've never been "oversold."
Plus, their grooming and boarding is in a separate building, so my Girls don't think of going to the vet when they stay overnight

The vets and staff take great care of my pups. They have adjusted to all the restrictions during Covid and their care has not diminished. Everyone takes time to talk and explain things and you never feel rushed.
They are the best in town. We had our 9 year old Jack Russell mix in for a dental exam and cleaning for the first time at this location. We have it done yearly. I cant remember the last time his teeth were this white.

We recently moved to the area and took our two dogs here for the first time yesterday for a routine appt & vaccines and we were very impressed! The whole staff was super nice and Dr Sholes was amazing! One of our dogs has a REALLY hard time at the vet bc of his nerves and I always dread having to bring him in but they were so sweet & patient with him and it really made all the difference! I m very happy with our decision to use them!

Although the actual vets are wonderful and the rates are not nearly as high as other vets around the District (and it is obvious they aren't aiming to rip you off), the customer service isn't so great. It often takes a ridiculous amount of time to be acknowledged by whoever is at the front desk, and then it takes another ridiculous amount of time to do something like...pay! Once the appointment is over, we might stand there and wait for another 15 minutes before we can pay and leave. In addition, we moved out of state for about a year and a half, moved back, and returned to Hometown with all vet and vaccination records. I'm not sure what they actually do with these records because we've brought them copies and had them faxed several times and they still can't get it right! If I called today asking when and if my dogs needed any vaccinations, they would tell me they need several, and they needed them 3 years ago! Get it together! We give you the papers. Utilize them. Again, we love the vets, but we also rely on them to be able to tell us when and if our dogs needs checkups, shots, etc, so that we can keep them healthy. If they cannot do that, we will have to find another vet that can!

Our Standard Poodle, Sebby, is now almost 4 years old. Dr. Melanie Smith has been with him from our first puppy visit. We absolutely won't go anywhere else for veterinary care. The staff are wonderful and make sure every visit is stress-free. I was just there today with my best friend's Cavanese puppy (King Charles Spaniel x Havanese) for his first grooming. Their new addition to the clinic is marvelous and gives many more options for clients. 5 stars without question!
We recently lost our girl pup Xena to cancer and Tammy, Dr. Sholes and everyone else at Hometown made the entire process so much easier and made sure that we understood everything that was going on. In our time of grief they were very kind and thoughtful. We have three other dogs and all three are patients at Hometown Vet. You can feel that the staff and doctors genuinely care for the animals as well as their humans. I always recommend Hometown Vet to anyone with a pet! You will not regret it.

We brought our Akita, Delilah, to Bed and Biscuits for grooming/bath on November 6th. The young woman who took care of Delilah did an excellent job. Since Akitas have double coats, it's often difficult and time consuming to bathe this breed. When we picked Delilah up she looked gorgeous. Her coat was so fluffy and seemed a different color. We highly recommend Bed and Biscuit grooming services. Knowledgeable staff who provide professional and caring services at reasonable rates.
Dr. Smith cares for our animals like she does her own. We simply won t go anywhere else.

Melanie Smith has cared for numerous presidential pets and in my experience, has extended the very same quality of care to my pets, whether they were puppies or older dogs. Secondly, their doggy day care service is truly wonderful. If you re looking for a place for your pets to blow off steam for a couple days of week that feels like home, this is your place. The staff are friendly, helpful and fair and you will leave each time knowing your pets (family members - let s be honest) are in the very best of hands.
I highly recommend this veterinary clinic. They are #1 in expertise and customer service, and most importantly (for me), they don't try to up sell me on products and services every time I go in.
I actually stopped going to my previous vet because it seemed like they were always trying to get me spend an extra $400 or more on extra lab work, x-rays, cleanings, meds, supplements, etc., even if I was going there for routine check-ups. And if I didn't buy all the extras, I was guilt tripped for it.
But I've never experienced anything like that at Hometown. They always tell me what the recommended care should be at each visit, and if I can't afford it all, they work with me to get the best possible care that is in my price range. As someone with multiple pets to care (and pay) for, that makes a HUGE difference to me. I feel like I can truly trust and respect their advice and recommendations.
We chose this vet based on reviews and location. We moved to another part of town where there are closer vet clinics but we chose to stick with this one due to the level of care and service. We have used the boarding on two occasions and highly recommend. Our dogs both seem to enjoy going there. I called to check on them during their last stay and one of the dog caregivers came to the phone to talk about how they were doing.

I took my 9 year old Lab to Dr Carlson for an ear infection. I had recently moved and decided to try Hometown Vet. What a nightmare. My dog has had ear infections before and past visits to the former vet always costed about $140 to remediate the issue. Carlson insisted that the BNT medicine that the former vet had used in the past, which always cured the problem should not be used. I explained that had been the only medicine that worked but Carlson had other ideas. On this first visit to Hometown Vet they stuck me with a tab of approximately $400, for one shot, bloodwork, labs and meds. None of the treatment given worked so I had to go back several more times and got stuck with hundreds of dollars more in bills. Just an FYI, they would not offer to help correct any of the issues they caused unless I paid another large sum.... My dog has been in misery for 4 weeks and had to have surgery (done at another vet hospital) to correct a large hematoma in his ear lobe which was caused 2 weeks after Dr Carlsons treatment, because the dog could not stop flapping around due to the ear ache. If Carlson had given my dog the BNT antibiotic as his prior vet had used, he would have been better in one week. I have now spent over $1500 between 2 vet clinics, for a simple ear infection and my dog is still in a lot of pain and on heavy meds. Dr Carlsons treatment did not work and the other vet told me that Carlson should have stuck to what had worked in the past. This place charged exorbitant prices for bad medical attention. My poor black lab has been sick for a month and now has a disfigured ear---all because of Dr Carlsons bad decision making and eagerness to overcharge me. I am shocked and saddened by this awful experience.
