Always great tours. Doors Open is the best event they put on! So many places to check out that normally are off limits to the public! They also have a great little store in their office filled with cool local gifts.

About Historic Milwaukee, Inc.

Historic Milwaukee, Inc. is a non-profit organization that has been working tirelessly to promote and preserve the rich architectural heritage of Milwaukee since its inception in 1974. The organization is dedicated to increasing awareness of and commitment to Milwaukee’s architecture, history, and the built environment.

The city of Milwaukee has a rich history that dates back over 200 years. It was founded in 1846 by Solomon Juneau, who named it after the Native American word for "gathering place by the water." Over time, it grew into a bustling industrial center with a thriving economy based on manufacturing and shipping.

One of the most notable features of Milwaukee's built environment is its architecture. The city boasts an impressive collection of historic buildings that reflect various architectural styles from different periods in history. From Gothic Revival to Art Deco, there are many examples of stunning architecture throughout the city.

Historic Milwaukee, Inc.'s mission is to ensure that these buildings are preserved for future generations to enjoy. They do this through a variety of programs and initiatives designed to raise awareness about the importance of historic preservation.

One such program is their annual Doors Open event. This event allows visitors to explore some of Milwaukee's most iconic buildings free-of-charge over two days each year. Visitors can take guided tours or explore on their own while learning about each building's unique history and significance.

Another initiative undertaken by Historic Milwaukee, Inc., is their Historic Preservation Awards program which recognizes individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions towards preserving historic structures within the city limits.

In addition to these programs, Historic Milwaukee also offers educational resources such as walking tours led by knowledgeable guides who share insights into local history as well as workshops on topics related to preservation techniques like window restoration or masonry repair.

The organization also publishes books on local architecture and provides consulting services for property owners looking for guidance on how best they can preserve their historic properties while still making them functional for modern use.

Overall, Historic Milwaukee Inc.'s work plays an essential role in preserving not only physical structures but also cultural heritage within our community. Their efforts help ensure that future generations will be able to appreciate all that makes our city unique while still enjoying modern amenities like new developments or infrastructure improvements without sacrificing what makes us special - our past!
