very clean for a facility like this. equipment is in very good to new condition. Staff is mostly super nice. For the 75 a month for a family (about), its one of the best investments in health and wellness you could make. Crazy thing is though that if you join and don't use it often, it has no effect!!!!

Our son played flag football for 3 seasons. The program is disorganized and not worth the money. The kids are great and kind to each other. The parents are gracious and polite. Communication is terrible and there are never enough coaches. I had hoped the rumors were not true that some coaches told their good players to stay home for the skills assessments so they would not be picked for other teams. I have no doubt that the director allowed that to happen. Last year, someone couldn't count, so they didn't have enough medals to give out. We had to wait until they got more. My son was the last in line and only one who didn't get his medal with the team. This year we got a little ribbon for participation. The team deserved much more considering they had a coach who was crazy AND quit before the season ended. Thank goodness someone from Lenoir Rhyne came to the rescue. I tried to give the YMCA a chance but cannot allow the disorganization, cheating, and outright mentally ill coach ruin my child's self esteem. I would give it a negative star if I could.

I was fat shamed in this establishment by the lunks who were there grunting and dropping weights, unlike planet fitness they did not have pizza or snacks which I need to maintain my sexy curves. The pool lanes are also too small and I tend to spill out into the other lanes

This is such a great YMCA facility. The staff, the grounds, the classes, everything. They do a really great job trying to accommodate all peoples schedules and their workout style.

Staff are accommodating to learning the equipment, and they are always cleaning the equipment.

This place is not worth the money whether your a guest or have a membership the staff here for the pool is very disrespectful. I do not recommend coming here. Oh and if you have a kid at 16 a member of the staff gave a rude remark about people shouldnt be having kids at 16. So dont waste your time here. Can't make up their minds about people swimming on the deep side either. One person said 16 and another said 17 none of them had any idea of what they were doing. Will not be coming back here again!

As a Silver Sneaker participant, I enjoy the classes and how they are designed for those with limited abilities. Chairs are available and used during the aerobic and yoga classes. The instructors explain how to modify the exercising to fit your specific capabilities. There are good cardio exercises and stretching times. The instructors are tuned into the needs of the senior population. This program is truly designed for those seniors who are young at heart!!

I took the day off to go to the Hickory Foundation Y and lay in the sun while my kids could swim.... all for them to tell me that the outdoor pool is closed to the public for a swim meet. I look out from the indoor pool and there's literally 2 lanes and 4 chaps swimming. So we ask if we can just sit in the sun out of the way (since there's hardly anyone out there) , but "NO, that's against the rules" This is one example of why I hate rules. How in the world is it going to hurt anyone for a member (who pays every month for the whole family) to sit over by the kiddie pool that is gated off away from the big pool??
Why in the world would you close one of the only public pools in hickory all day instead of holding the swim meet indoors!?!? Peace is all I wanted today.

I am amazed at a non-profit agency that will continue to charge its members when they are closed. In canceling my account I was told that the funds support the daycare and blood drives. Blood drives are done by American Redcross who does not charge to set up and do blood donations. Daycare service which I used over 20 years ago charged enough to pay staff not counting the NC finds they get each month. Your also making staff sign up if they do not work so pocketing monthly membership fees provides income to board of directors so be honest on where membership fees are going while you are closed for service.

We are not members here but paid for our two kids to have swim lessons. I am not one to write negative reviews, but this was so disorganized and such a waste of time/money, I felt it was necessary. The staff leading our toddler in swim lessons rotated each day and you could easily tell they were not trained. My wife was on a swim team and a lifeguard/swim lesson instructor for another YMCA thru college and this place was a joke. They started late almost every day and ended on time so the 30 minutes session was really closer to 20 minutes. One day they started 15 minutes late, which is so disrespectful when I rush there from work on time to stand around and wait while the instructor just chats away with other people. On top of that they rotate their time to each kid in their group so each kid may have a total of 1-3 minutes in the pool during a session. The remaining time is sitting on the side. I even witnessed a small child fall in the pool in my sons class and the staff made us parents stand away from them to where the little girl was under water a good 30 seconds before the instructor realized the dad was about to jump in. They cram way too many kids in to effectively teach and our youngest child s class was such a joke we didn t bring him back. This may work for older kids 6 years + but anything under that don t bother.

I recently moved to Hickory and was looking for a local, full-service workout facility. After touring the Y with a very pleasant and helpful young man, I was excited and ready to join. That was until they stated there was a "mission fee" of $30 to join, on top of the monthly charge. "Mission fee" equals an application fee, which I refuse to pay, anywhere! Basically a charge from a facility for agreeing to take your money every month. Really? Whatever happened to just being happy that a customer chose YOUR facility to spend their hard-earned money every month? If you pay application fees, you are the part of the problem.

What's the point in having an outdoor pool if it seems to be never open? I called up there June 21st and some female said it's closed all weekend. I'm sick of swimming inside, it's depressing and over crowded.

I actually love, and enjoy going to this YMCA. Everything about it is great. The staff is amazing. The indoor gymnasium, as well as the indoor walking track is so good. I enjoy going to this facility every single time the chance becomes available. Thank you guys for all your hard work in making this a safe and easy place to work out and have FUN! (:

Hickory City YMCA ... SPITS in Veteran's Faces

Hickory City YMCA ... SPITS in Veteran's Faces

That's right!!!

I went down the end of August to sign up. I was told Veteran's received a Special Discount, $30 per month with NO Contract for one person ... that it had been a Program for years ... and "IT WOULD NOT GO AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I was also given a "Wink-Wink" to wait until mid September, because there was a Special Promotion giving a Free Month to new members.

I just went down, 9.25.2017 ... I was told the VETERAN'S BENEFIT had been TAKEN AWAY ... Thank you for Lying to me ... so-called Christian Organization ...

Shaking my shoes off at your doorstep ... may you be judged of God!

One of my friends was getting bullied and I tried to stop the bully by asking for him to stop but we got in trouble with a counselor because I was "yelling" at him. My friends and I were trying to back my other friend up and the bully said that we called him a name but we listed a lot of things that he did and we still got in trouble. He got ice cream and candy while we had to go home.

This is rare but staff does a great job cleaning the place. The snack bar sells the essentials someone might be at a gym, but nothing speacil.

Read some of those negative reviews and felt compelled to share that I love this place. It is a great asset to the community and has a lot of great people working there. I wish things were better at all times in all places but this place is always striving to help members and guests.

After a long day at work I wanted to go to the cardio punch class. I've adjusted my work hours just so I can make it to the class. I arrived only to find out they couldn't watch my kids and they would have to go on a waitlist. I told them at that point the class would either be halfway over or even over and told them I would just go back home. They need more childcare people on busier days. One of my sons was upset he couldn't stay to play. Not a happy member.

I really wish the hours were more open and consistent. I don t work a typical 9-5 job so it s a little difficult to get a workout in the day. Sometimes I don t get off work until 10. I ve been around 5-7pm before and it s a mess. Pretty much everything is taken in the gym. Finding a bench is hard and you can forget about doing some cardio. It s so crowded that I ve literally walked in before and walked straight out. I know this review will probably fall to blind eyes but I felt the need to say something. I believe the membership cost that everyone pays should mean they have a say in hours at least. YMCA is one of the higher priced gyms.
