About Haagsche Studenten Vereeniging
Haagsche Studenten Vereeniging: The Oldest and Most Traditional Student Association in The Hague
Haagsche Studenten Vereeniging (HSV) is the oldest and most traditional student association in The Hague, Netherlands. Established over 90 years ago, HSV has been a second home for students in the city. With its rich history and strong traditions, HSV has become an integral part of the student life in The Hague.
The History of Haagsche Studenten Vereeniging
HSV was founded on October 1st, 1923 by a group of students from various faculties at Leiden University who were studying in The Hague. They wanted to create a community where they could socialize with each other outside of their studies. Since then, HSV has grown into one of the most respected student associations in the country.
Over the years, HSV has faced many challenges but it has always managed to overcome them with resilience and determination. During World War II, when many Dutch universities were closed down by German occupation forces, HSV continued to operate underground as an illegal organization.
After the war ended, HSV resumed its activities and became even more popular among students. Today it boasts over 500 members from different faculties at universities across The Hague.
What Makes Haagsche Studenten Vereeniging Unique?
One thing that sets HSV apart from other student associations is its strong sense of tradition. It takes pride in preserving its customs while also adapting to modern times.
For example, every year during May Day celebrations (May 1st), members gather at Scheveningen beach for a swim followed by breakfast on the beach. This tradition dates back to 1934 when it was first introduced as a way for members to celebrate spring together.
Another unique aspect of HSV is its close ties with Leiden University's faculty club Minerva which was founded over two centuries ago making it one of Europe's oldest student societies still active today.
