GRID-Arendal: Transforming Environmental Data into Innovative Information Products
GRID-Arendal is a non-profit environmental communications centre that has been at the forefront of transforming environmental data into innovative, science-based information products for over 30 years. The organization was established in 1989 as a joint initiative between the Norwegian government and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to provide capacity-building services and inform and activate a global audience to effect positive change.
The mission of GRID-Arendal is to bridge the gap between science and policy by providing decision-makers with accurate, reliable, and accessible information on critical environmental issues. The organization's work focuses on four main areas: oceans, climate change, biodiversity, and sustainable development.
One of GRID-Arendal's core strengths is its ability to translate complex scientific data into user-friendly formats that are accessible to policymakers, journalists, educators, students, and the general public. The organization produces a wide range of information products such as reports, maps, infographics, videos, podcasts and interactive tools that are designed to communicate key messages effectively.
GRID-Arendal collaborates with UNEP and other partners around the world on various projects aimed at addressing pressing environmental challenges. For example:
- In collaboration with UNEP's Global Programme of Action for the Protection of Marine Environment from Land-Based Activities (GPA), GRID-Arendal developed an online platform called "Marine Litter Solutions" which provides practical guidance on how to prevent marine litter.
- In partnership with Norway's Ministry of Climate and Environment (MCE), GRID-Arendal produced an interactive map called "Norwegian Climate Adaptation Portal" which provides information about climate impacts in Norway.
- In collaboration with UNEP's Regional Seas Programme (RSP), GRID-Arendal developed an online tool called "SeaSketch" which enables stakeholders to collaborate in designing marine spatial plans.
GRID-Arendal also provides capacity-building services such as training workshops for policymakers on how to use scientific data effectively in decision-making processes. The organization has worked with governments in Africa, Asia-Pacific region Latin America & Caribbean region Europe & Central Asia region Middle East & North Africa region Arctic Region Small Island Developing States etc., helping them develop policies based on sound scientific evidence.
In conclusion,
GRID-Arendal is a unique non-profit organization that plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between science and policy by transforming complex environmental data into innovative information products that are accessible to decision-makers worldwide. Its collaborations with UNEP have enabled it not only reach out globally but also make significant contributions towards addressing pressing environmental challenges across different regions around the world. With its focus on oceans climate change biodiversity sustainable development etc., it continues working towards achieving its mission while providing capacity building services like training workshops for policymakers so they can use scientific evidence more effectively when making decisions related specifically or indirectly related environment conservation efforts!
