I've been a member here for 6 years, physically helped to build the new coop when they moved, and generally was ok with it, but am leaving because of a terrible experience I had with my two daughters the last time I was working my shift.
After stocking the shelves with all the new shipments that had recently arrived, moving all excess stock into storage in the basement, and breaking down all the cardboard boxes with my two daughters who are 4 and 6 and did a great job helping, we noticed pools of black goo all over the coop floor. Since we had finished everything that there was to do, we began cleaning the 10 + large pools of black goo on the floors. As we reached the front of coop after having cleaned up all of the goo, another member who had just finished working her shift explained that the goo was from her shopping cart, and that it was juice from black beans she had knowingly been spilling all over the coop (apparently expecting someone else to clean up). I suggested that she put it in a (plant based, biodegradable) bag and she refused because she had "just finished working her shift" and that I had "such a strong team of girls working with me that it should be no problem". Then I told her that it was immature to knowingly go around creating a giant mess expecting someone else to clean it and if it were me, I would clean up after myself. I handed her a roll of paper towels and she got clearly offended.
We went back to work, finished the rest of our tasks and since our shift was nearly over and we had completed literally everything that needed to be done and there were no customers in the store, I asked my daughters to grab a shopping cart so we could get a head start on shopping since checking out there takes like 30 min since the cashiers are so inefficient even when there's no one there. The manager Willa stopped us to inform us that there was plenty to do, and listed all of the tasks which we had already completed. She then accused us of having "done nothing" our entire shift at which point I became furious, the other coop worker who was knowingly spilling bean juice everywhere threatened to call the police (?!), and I left with my daughters.

I bring my daughters to my shifts hoping that they will see the value of volunteering and being involved in a community, but instead we bust our butts when btw hardly any of the members working their shifts ever do much at all, then am expected to clean up after some entitled woman-child, and take abuse from the manager who doesn't appreciate our hard work and doesn't seem to get that we are VOLUNTEERS not SERVANTS, it's ridiculous. No, I'm not putting up with that kind of treatment from anyone, especially in front of my daughters.
It didn't used to be like this but things have changed evidently.

This definitely isn't a coop that values families, they don't see the value of volunteer work, they don't value members with children who don't have childcare but somehow manage to squeeze a coop shift into a very busy work/family schedule.
There are other places to buy good quality organic and local products like Greene Grape in FT Greene, Fairway, TJs.

SOOOOOOO NOT WORTH IT!

New incarnation of a this small local food coop. Great selection of fresh organic produce for such a small coop, and at reasonable prices. Seems to have renewed energy and enthusiasm with the reopening. Definitely worth checking out and maybe joining.

What a wonderful treat. This place has got fresh eats and while we stayed in Brooklyn, it was so convenient for us just to walk down and not have to wait in a long line like so many of the big corporate names.

I really love coming in as a visitor with my friend when I cook her dinner ...but I would love if there was an option for a day pass or a pay to play or a volunteer for a couple hours of time to get admitted....it s so exclusive. I want to be in the in crowd and would definitely join but I don t live in the area.

A relatively new food coop, currently with ~1100 members. It's not open every day, but hours are increasing. Membership is a one-off payment of $175, and members have to work 2 hours every four weeks. Non-members cannot shop, but are always able to get a tour of the coop.

It can be busy on Saturdays and straight after work. Come later on a wednesday or during the day on Monday to avoid the lines.

There's a good range of local produce year-round, and a small bulk foods section.
