A hidden gem of a place with nice food and stunning gardens and house
Brilliant planting in an extraordinary setting, imaginative juxtapositions of plants. Great to see the continuing evolution of the Great Dixter sensibility!
Lovely gardens, but they need to sort out the cafe! They could make so much more of it...
So impressed and loved it. Wonder why I hadn t gone before - highly recommend
Would have given 4 stars but the house wasn't all that. In fact at the time of my visit only about a third of the house was open. The gardens are beautiful although some parts were overgrown.
Amazing colourful and abundant planting make this garden worth a visit.
Great garden. But very expensive to see just 2 rooms in the house. Not adequate price.
Truly beautifully kept wild gardens of bee loving flowers the gardeners work hard to keep to blend the flowers into a rainbow of colours and scents.
Bees buzz happily having such a source of pollen. The house is well kept and full of history to.
Stunning gardens crammed with plants of every description surrounding an attractive old house.
Great Dixter is a wonderful garden that has to be seen to be believed.
Everything and so much more. The garden that keeps on giving.
This garden was right up my street with it's cottage style. I loved the way the borders were jam packed with a variety of plants and flowers. The plants were allowed to grow across the footpaths, hence the accessibility advice on the website about prams and wheelchairs especially with the steps.
There were arrows to guide you through the different areas for social distancing. I can't wait to return and see inside the house.
A unique feeling gardeners paradise. Loved the masses of planting and the route around during Covid measures was through. Even on a damp day the beauty of the place shone through. Devine plant sales too
Stunning display of flowers at this time of the year.
Smaller than expected. Mainly because quite a bit given over to grasslands. The wife thought it great, I thought it a bit overgrown but there were a number of gardens you could walk round. Good cafe, shop and nursery on the periphery. There was house entry but this was disappointing as only 3 rooms available to visit hard to see from the inside how the 3 original structures were put together.
A magnificent English garden. A profusion of incredible flowers and plants. We are sailing in a jungle of colors. At each step we discover another point of view with the exuberance and organized disorder of all kinds of multicolored plants and flowers. If you appreciate the gardens do not miss this one.
A beautiful garden with a large variety of unusual plants. Many which can be purchased from the nursery on site.
Wonderful, very inspiring, simply beautiful plant combinations.
Excellent, expansive gardens, with plenty of colour. Paths can get a little cramped as the plants spread over them, but nothing that can be done about that, plants grow and spread after all, and it would ruin the gardens if they tried cutting them back. The open part of the house is very limited, but amazing to see so much original house still visible. A very popular place, and well worth a visit
Gardens are very different to any I've visited before. Lots of beautiful colours and certainly a different way of planting. Wished I'd had more time to consider doing a tour of the garden. I didn't go into the house as I didn't have time.
A lovely garden well worth visiting and the house was very interesting inside as well. It made for a very nice walk in a very peaceful setting. The only issue we had was that when we came to eat at just after 2pm there was hardly anything left, no sandwich's or cooked food which were shown on the board, people were walking in and back out disappointed.
Beautiful gardens. A very peaceful spot. Lots of plants for sale.
I love this place. The gardens are beautifully thought out, changeable over the seasons. Wild areas are carefully considered. Nice tearoom and nursery where you can buy plants grown on site. Lots to explore including oast house.
Great Dixter garden was breathtakingly beautiful. The highlight of my trip to the UK. I would be back there in a heart beat!
These intimate and eclectic gardens are worth a visit throughout the year.
lovely garden, expensive to visit but good explanations of the history.
Interesting but not the best. Things tend to look messy and unkept. Good but not on the same level as most national trust gardens. Shops could be much better. The plant nursery is however quite impressive with a lot of choice.
I have been 3or 4 times over the past few years. If you like herbaceous plants and wonderful meadows then you can't beat it. Has to be one of the best plant gardens in the country.
Fabulous gardens, we really enjoyed wandering through the gardens.
Loved the whole experience
Great plant combination
Historic house and garden
Must visit
Even though I visited at the beginning of Autumn as most things in the gardens were past their best, the gardens at Great Dixter were still beautiful. The care and attention lavished on them would make Christopher Lloyd proud I'm sure, and I especially love the way the 'old crafts' are kept alive by training a succession of new apprentices. It was a lovely peaceful way to spend a few hours, a real escape from the noise and bustle of everyday life.
our first visit, initially very impressed but as we went round many areas of the gardens looked very similar in planting and style. But really the long border.
A beautiful home & gardens to visit. For gardeners it has been a difficult season with the continued hot weather. Well done gardeners :).
It was a lovely day, relaxed and the food was really nice. The staff were friendly & informative. Definitely worth a visit.
The flower beds were amazing! Packed with colour and fragrance
Visited at the of August and the gardens were bursting with an amazing collection of plants. Didn't disappoint one bit. Great plant nursery too...lots of choice of healthy plants.
Visited on an extremely hot bank holiday Saturday. Fancying an ice cream we went to the small catering hut to find they had a sum total of 9 ice creams, 2 cornettos and 7 clippos! On asking if there were more we were told they would be going to the wholesalers tomorrow, on a Sunday! Have always thought the catering was extremely poor but this really was the limit. The tropical garden was very disappointing, it was bare compared to when I saw it last. I think that the gardens with the chaotic planting isn't clever at all, just very lazy. There were weeds everywhere but as the planting is so dense I doubt anyone can get in there to dig them out. Perhaps the dense planting is to discourage the weeds, it certainly didn't work. Having visited many times previously I was very disappointed with Dixter this time and won't be visiting again in the near future.
Pretty gardens, but the tour of the house takes a while so be prepared for a long session.
Beautiful gardens. Couldn't get into the house at due to Covid 19.
Quite pricey but we'll worth a visit
See Christopher Lloyd's horticultural creation. Lovely peaceful place that rivals nearby Sissinghurst. Well worth a visit to the gardens if not the house.
Something for all seasons and truly inspirational planting ideas
Great house and gardens with friendly staff. Would definitely recommend visiting if you are nearby the area! Especially in peak flowering season.
A 15th cent. beauty with stunning gardens.
The house is terrific inside, but no photos.
Outside, is a photographer's dream. As you
wander, there's beauty at every turn. I was
there in August and the beds were brimming
with colour. Great vegetables. A well laid out
Nursery awaits the enthusiast. There's a cafe
with simple hand-food, and a gift shop. Not
suitable for wheelchairs. Free carpark.
Toilets. Friendly enthusiastic staff.
Gardens good, house interesting, popular with European coach parties though!
Stunning garden this is how a cottage garden should look like. We didn't get to see anything of the house due to covid restrictions but the garden was/is beautiful and inspiring. The views from the picnic tables dotted around are fabulous. Many public footpaths around too. Good parking. Worth a visit and a tenner a head well worth it.
Magnificent Elizabethan mansion, I didn't really like the "invasive nature" side, which is very fashionable at the moment in English gardens.
Absolutely amazing place for a short visit! If coming on weekend it seemed a good idea to have arrived just for the opening at 11 am and before more visitors started filling up the gardens. And a coffee shop not to be missed!
Lovely gardens. I love this place. So peaceful beautiful and colourful.
This is just the most beautiful place I've ever been. The gardens are beyond stunning and the house is breathtaking. I loved pressing through the plants, discovering beautiful view after beautiful view. It felt like a real adventure. There are so many flowers and trees and the sights and smells as you walk around are magical. I had an interesting talk with one of the gardeners. fell in love with the place and I hope to be back there very, very soon.
Once again a stunning visit the garden looks great whatever time of year you visit so much to see.
The best garden that I've been to in the whole of the UK.
Very nice garden. Everything is created of course .. no pesticides for the plants, but only biological processing of the plants.
Small cafe with attached shop where there is good garden literature, and handgeschmidetes tool for the garden's also.
Various plants can also be purchased for your own garden.
I enjoyed the informal garden and the diversity of plants.
This is always a marvellous and (I think) breathtaking experience.
This year especially the hot weather has encouraged growth, although the lack of rain has clearly given the brilliant team of gardeners a few worries.
If anything, the planting is much heavier in places and almost overwhelming. This is of course my personal feeling and others will love it. The gardens are unique, exciting, inspiring and always provide positive feelings and wonder. The refreshment and gift shops are sensibly stocked and the small cafe makes an interesting attempt at customer service. After all, this is a garden and not a restaurant.
What an amazing place for the garden and plant enthusiast. Good parking facilities and cafe area. Lectures and garden guides are available. Disabled access and there is a plant sales for those who want to take a little bit of Dixter home.
A visit here is a fabulous experience
