Great coffee and the Danish was good also. I used to visit this coffee shop when I lived in Tempe and it has a great atmosphere for visiting with friends. No drive through, most people who stop in stay and enjoy the cup of Joe.

Just came here for the first time after hearing so much positive news about them, man I wish I had received the kindness that everyone mentions getting here.

I just walked in, the place is full of people but there is no line, everybody seems good. The two baristas, young blonde white women, at the counter see me walk in as they are working at the register on processing something. One of them literally just stares me down as I approach the counter and says nothing to me as the other one works. I say hello to this young woman and she just glares at me and in a depressed flat tone says "Hey."

I am not sure why she was so upset but I could not help but feel that she did not want me there and she did not want to talk to me or to ask me anything. I have never felt so repulsed from a coffee shop while just trying to get a single drink when there is no line.

I order a small coffee, she explains they can't ring me up at the moment because of a tip process on the register, I say that's fine I will wait and she slowly begins to grab a cup and make the drink.

I left feeling like I should have never gone in there at all. I cannot believe how painful and difficult it was for the barista to help me with my order or to even ask me what I would like or if I had been there or offer any recommendations. This does not seem like the typical experience at this restaurant, but the abundance of white people there almost made it seem like I was an unwelcome ethnic person walking in and disrupting her day.

This coffee is way too sweet, a small should not be made with 2 pumps of flavor, and not worth the $5 for the smallest size and terrible experience.

Cozy little corner artisan coffee house. I've been coming here for 11 years and not a single thing has changed. It's a great place to study and there are always college students here. Not a lot of places to sit and it's common for a student to take over a 4-seater table with their books and computer. But the coffee is always outstanding.

Great vibe, low key place to spend time. Lots of games but not a lot of tables and they are almost always full when I come. So happy they have many plant- based milks to choose from and the drinks are always top-notch!

The coffee is amazing here and, according to my wife, so is the iced tea. I've been going to this location since I was in high school (graduated '03) and the family that owns this place is nothing but fantastic. They have a small live jazz band on Fridays.

The atmosphere is great for just sitting and chatting, but if you need to get a little work done over the wifi you can do that too. It's a small coffee shop so it's cozy, but they have plenty of additional seating outdoors.

I may be bias, this place will hold a special place for me. As it was the place I had my first date with my wife. We sat for 7 hours and chatted on our first date and the staff didn't bother us. Three years later I proposed to her in front of the exact seats we sat in on our first date. The staff were absolutely great for accommodating me in popping the big question. They allowed my sister-in-law to come by early and spread rose petals on the seats. And didn't mind that a few close friends and family waiting, hiding inside to also help surprise my wife (we made sure they all got coffee, tea, or hot chocolate).

Great folks that run this place. Great coffee and the best memories.

Perfect atmosphere inside this coffee shop for reading or getting some work done. Low warm light in the shop comes mostly from lamps at every table. Usually not noisy besides the usual bustle. The staff has always been kind too. Love this shop!

A really neat, tight, good-vibe cafe with limited seating but great coffee. It seems to be occupied mostly by serious, (digitally) engaged young scholars. The crowd has few chit-chatters, and a zero dufus-quotient. You can sit out in the sun or, if lucky, grab a seat inside and plug-in. Either way, there is a great range of coffee drinks to be had. The staff is unstintingly friendly, talented, and helpful. They make the place proud. Gold Bar Espresso is a little gem of a redoubt for the hiraeth, restless soul.

Friendly staff, involved owners, great coffee and delicious pastries, also offering a sizeable selection of teas. Best of all they have a full jazz band 2 times a week, Friday and Sunday evenings, and a jazz guitarist on Sunday morning. In addition they host a boardgame night on Saturdays.

Love this place! The coffee, and pastries are wonderful. I found the folks running the joint to be wonderful, as well. I don't do iced coffee. My order was mistakenly made as an iced coffee, stuff happens. I was going to give my iced coffee, to my wife, and have another one made, no problem. The owner, or manager, sitting at a near-by table, wasn't having it. He insisted the order be made correctly, no charge. I stayed a bit longer, to enjoy the music.

The aptnosher inside is calm and quiet. It is the perfect place to do homework or collage work or just kick back and chill. All of the lamps inside are unique and the whole place has such a wonderful character.
I love Gold Bar.

This is not a family friendly place. The owners are elderly and are often there. They have a very short temper when it comes to children, even in the patio areas. If you have anyone in your party who could make a sound over normal conversation I would suggest going elsewhere. They went out of their way to make me feel uncomfortable after getting my child a chocolate milk. It was frustrating and made a happy moment into a sad one. There were other people laughing loudly on the patio but we were the ones asked to leave and I do not feel that we were making any more noise then they were. I guess they cater only to students and older adults. I went there often as a student but apperantly that counts for nothing. We will never go there again.

Coffee is great! The place is owned by a very welcoming couple. In the morning the regulars love chat and makes cafe a cozy place. Oh and they have my favorite cream cheese Danish...it's amazing! Creamy, so good.

Nice shop with a good neighborhood vibe to. Staff very friendly and its easy to find. Coffee was served very hot and a bit watered down. Despite that the coffee had a nice flavor. A respectable place to visit.

It's a blend of modernity and the classic ol' college town coffee bar. Beautiful artsy decor. From local artists to the framed stained glass window that hangs in this eclectic little coffee shoppe. The coffee menu is extensive and alluring. And it's a testament to the young talented baristas that steam, blend and forth to perfection. Highly recommended.

As a grad student, Gold Bar is my go-to spot. Open early/late, indoor and outdoor seating, cheap and delicious drinks, and reliable WiFi makes this a great place to get work done. Also, there are a lot of windows so this place gets lots of natural light.

Busy coffee shop! When I left a guy asked me "did you just leave? can I have your seat?" When I said yes, he literally ran into the shop to grab the table. Great atmosphere though. Mostly young people working on laptops.

Such a great local coffee shop! I could get a vanilla chai toddy here every day and never get tired of it. It's quiet enough you can get stuff done, but not so quiet you feel like you can't have a conversation,...and the staff is super friendly too. There are also a ton of board games if you decide to stay and hang out of for a while. It's usually pretty busy, but never so busy you can't find a place to sit. Definitely one of my favorite study spots in Tempe!

This is a small coffee shop that was totally off my radar until a few months ago. It's tucked away near Ross. They make some of the better cold brew I've had around Tempe. The baristas know us now. They have a variety of desserts and breakfast things like quiche. They do a punch card system also. A chill place in my opinion. They do live jazz on Friday nights if I recall.

Never even got to order. Someone stood at the counter for 15 minutes. Not sure what all was happening, figured after 5 I would sit and wait. Never got to order left after 20 minutes. Maybe they ordered so many coffees that the 3 people working behind the counter couldn't keep up? Only gave them 3 stars because it was warm and cozy inside.

It's a small little cozy place you can bring your laptop your tablet they have their pies and cakes their cookies or muffins everything is just really good I enjoy myself every time I go there

Favorite local coffee shop in the valley hands down. It's cozy, cute, and quiet. I live 30 minutes away and commute here on my "work from home" shifts to avoid any and all Starbucks. Give them your money!

The staff are friendly and helpful. It's a cute coffee shop with an historic legacy in Tempe. We love coming here! However their punch cards aren't "get your 11th one free" but rather "your 11th drink is just $1" or "$1.50 for Uber size".

Let Me just say "it's meh...". So it's nothing amazing, it's not great, it's not like even good, it's just OK. It's not bad coffee it's OK coffee they're not bad pastries they're almost OK pastries. I guess it's about atmosphere too! it's just not a good atmosphere that I'd want to just chill or do work or even hang out in, there's just not a lot of joy or possibly friendly in the space to be real. The baristas don't great you or really recommend stuff to willingly. They use store baught powder to make one of the most simple drinks ever, a chai. You can get the exact powder at any Costco for $10 for a three month supply of every day Chai and Gold Bar charges $6 ish for one cup! Its water and powder...ummm. Soooo I do try to like it but they make it super difficult to just enjoy the place.

It does have very interesting antique coffee store wooden decore chest taking up the front counter in an odd way, in the entry seating area hangs a rotating Art Gallery Wall with absolutely HORRIBLE ART every time I've been in so im not judging one showing. Amazing obscure photos of jazz musicians & pseudo antique paintings and images every where else on the walls.

I like the books! Super cool range of about 60 or so seemingly random books but then not random at all ... very clearly curated or just good and explorative tasteful books in a range of subjects, totally worth walking in and just grabbing one off the shelf and looking through it, paging through it, reading it, whatever. I can stand just about that much before I'm out of there if and when I do go there for a few when i have nothing else going and I'm looking for a quick stop over with Espresso.

I can get about halfway through my coffee before I'm done being in that space. It's just lacking something like ambiance that makes sense or comfortable chairs oh my GOSH!!! HUGE ISSUE CHAIRS SUCK... Not only is every chair in the place like the least comfortable chair EVER made, but every time you move a chair it makes the most horrendous screeching SUPER LOUD noise across the concrete floor and that's every single chair in the place does this so you figure out how fun that is NOT.

Other than the off set of chairs HORRIBLE DEAFENING screaching sounds on the floor each time someone scoots in or out.... the place is a bit strangely quiet, doesn't play music, and not really a place to go and have a good time or have a great long lively conversation or be smiling laughing or loud at all!! In fact I guess it's a little bit like a tiny library but with super bad Art, and the librarian is really grumpy when you ask for help, but she will make you coffee. Too bad it doesn't have as many wonderful books or smell as good as a library....

You see I'm the kind of person who will come and stay all day doing my work and giving a place my money if it's AT ALL enjoyable to hang out in, even if it's almost not enjoyable to hang out in, sometimes I will still hang out because I like the people, or the energy, or even just one single drink! Ughhhh but i just don't find Gold Bar Espresso generally enjoyable.

But this place definitely needs something or just I don't know it's a bummer it's just a bummer or a quaint quiet haunt.... you can decide.

Like I said the coffee's OK and if you're in the neighborhood it's better than nothing.

One of, if not THE longest standing independent coffee shopping in Tempe. Quiet and contemplative atmosphere inside, but plenty of outdoor seating. Sometimes I just grab my americano to go, but I also enjoy meeting friends and playing the occasional game on the patio.

First time ever and last, I've gone to other coffee bars with much friendlier staff, was not given any reccomendations on what to try when I said it was our first time, seemed like employees were dying to leave an hour and a half before closing. Chai tea was very good deserves its own star! updating the review been back twice with my friends who love this coffee spot this time service definitely was better and chais same delicious flavor great pastries as well
