Overpriced bar and very slow service, with a nice garden
Went for a family wedding, friendly staff, good drinks
Nice staff, comfy bed. Unfortunately I was Awoken at 6am by what sounded like a pitched battle happening between giant gorillas and a mongol horde in the kitchens. Breakfast very expensive at 18 quid and not particularly good.
Sunday lunch 1300 was alright but full of small, continual disappointments. We ordered rose and after a long wait was told there was none, white wine was not chilled. We ordered lamb.. eventually told the menu was incorrect and there was none. Also half cooked parsnips, ready made desserts we hoped for fresh lemon posset and certainly not expecting it to be accompanied by oven cooked Walker's (!) shortbread, stale biscuits accompanying the cheese, missing ice-cream flavour (the rare one.. vanilla) no mentioned until wrong ones served and we complained. Garden was nice for the kids. Service was friendly... but absent after ordering. I don't blame them. We weren't the only ones complaining. Maybe the focus was on outside diners or a wedding. Shame the Summer kitchen was not available as advertised too. The Ros boeuf was tasty though. Most of us had that. Though primarily that was because the lamb was a mistake on the menu and that's all there was.
Popped in regarding a potential booking GREAT Service from a guy I think called Jaz seemed to be on the ball seriously considering booking
Lovely old coaching inn, gets v busy in the bar area at lunchtimes so be patient!
Great venue fantastic staff ! What a brilliant place to have a wedding truly magical barn ! Very easy to get to and plenty of parking very close to the rooms. Food and drink great and the place a real charm about it. Definitely recommend
Room was clean and tidy - reception staff friendly. Great place to say for a night however would advise against eating here - better off going into Marlow or similar for breakfasts/supper.
This was disappointing having previously endjoyed the dining room. I had the smoked Salman and lamb. The salmon was a tiny amount, and I mean small, it was bland and when asked for some soy to liven it up we were given bottle of sauce that was warm. The Lamb was tough, had to ask for a serated knife
Had a meal with two friends a week ago at The Olde Bell
3 starters of scollops ordered ....
what arrived with each starter.. 3 slices of scollop, each slice the size of a 10p coin with a minute bit of coleslaw,
They must have used one scollop to serve the three of us and finished with a good halve scollop left over.
3 main courses ordered .... fillet of sea bream.
I will not bother to tell you the size of the fillets but I am pretty sure that the chef at The Olde Bell must have been the Good Lords chief advisor when The Lord was feeding thousands of followers whilst only having five fishes.
I finished the evening by indulging in an Irish Coffee ....
The only other thing I can safely say about the chef at The Olde Bell is ......
HE IS NOT IRISH.
Although The Olde Bell is a lovely rural pub the evening was quite an expensive disappointment.
A lovely village location, would definitely recommend.
Lovely garden and a traditional pub; has a great day at a wedding in the barn across the road - highly recommend for a nice summer event and/or drink!
We had our wedding at the Olde Bell in June and have waited a short time for a response to our feedback from the hotel chain regional manager. However as this has not been forthcoming I have summarised our comments to the hotel below
In summary we have given a one star rating based on a composite of 1) the wedding prep and day itself 2) the service, cleanliness and support of the staff to our party and general users of the hotel/restaurant whilst we were there, 3) the response and follow up from the hotel since the wedding
1) The wedding prep and the wedding day itself (service provided pre wedding and on the day by Rebecca was 5 star) was fantastic and way above the 1 star rating given above
2) The Hotel accommodation was overpriced for the level of service, (staff motivation, politeness, attentiveness), cleanliness of the rooms and linen etc. Our guests had numerous issues that were not consistently dealt with. The level of service in the restaurant was poor for our party and other guests using the facilities.
3) Despite sending Rebecca feedback that was forwarded on to regional manager this has not been acknowledged or responded to despite the feedback being provided over a month ago now.
We totally enjoyed our wedding day, however for anyone looking to book the Olde Bell we would suggest you really consider the non wedding feedback on Trip Advisor etc as this gives you a real perspective on the level of accommodation and service provided at the Bell that you can expect to receive outside of the wedding planning and delivery.
The food is delicious but the service is absolutely awful prepare to wait half an hour at least between your courses
Quaint pub in a quaint village. A nice resting stop for anyone passing through.
We were really pleased to find that they were serving food late afternoon when most pubs have stopped serving. Decent enough burgers (beef, haloumi) with chunky chips and a smile in a rather lovely garden.
Very friendly with great food. We visited on a rainy April day, but could imagine the family in the garden during the better weather.
Great oldy worldy pub, rustic surroundings which go with the quaintness and ambience of the pub, had Sunday Lunch roast beef, which i must say was the best Roast dinner ive had for years!! Gravy was divine, beef cooked to prefection, lovely presentation of food and a very ample supply, compliments to the chef :-) bar man Adrian lovely demeanour , gave Great service and knowledable conversation, given with smiles. a good embassador for your company
We popped in here on the off chance of finding a Sunday roast.
Looks like a lovely place in Hurley, service very good.
Tasty starters with good salmon.
The lamb roast? The lamb itself was excellent really nice meat but where was the rest of the roast??
Nice creamy potato, 1 carrot and 1 piece of green thing across the plate.
No peas, no broccoli etc
Overall although the food was good but the portions were tiny.
Hmmm??
Very friendly and cosy place to have a pint after a 3 mile walk along the Thames
The room was ok... We travelled with a dog and the hotel was billed as dog friendly but we could only eat in the bar area. That area was so small, we couldnt get in, even on a sunday.
If you're in the same boat, walk down to the rising sun with your dog. Nice staff, food and drinks.
Attended a few corporate events here. Food has been from third parties so cannot really comment here. However venue in the barn is lovely. Big enough space for SME companies and friendly staff. Drinks are expensive though which is a big downside. Location is also a little awkward as it's in the middle of nowhere.
Food is just ok. Lamb was a bit dry. Breakfast buffet uninspired. Room has no closet : Just a couple of coat hooks and hangars
I recently photographed a wedding here and the staff could not have been more helpful and attentive. Everyone I met had a huge smile on their face and nothing was too much trouble, please don't let recent reviews put you off, this hotel is now under new management. I am looking forward to treating my boyfriend to a nice lunch when we are next in the area. Also thank you to the receptionist for his help in finding my phone! Helen, Helen Sarah Pictures.
Garden Kitchen, bad experience. Lovely property and garden...BUT...poor ordering experience, then long wait for food that was atrocious. Incomplete order, badly presented, poorly cooked, indifferent serving. Second star was because a member staff did try to handle complaint, replaced food with fresh cook from restaurant and some free drinks grudgingly given. They were struggling with staff that evening lot of f'ing and blinding in back room. A very poor experience that ruined a relaxed evening.
this is a inn. Good is nice and freshly made. Good for wedding.
Stayed in the court yard rooms which was a bungalow so felt like staying in your Grandparents back bedroom. Have stayed before in the hotel which was better. The breakfast was like being at Faulty Towers, so we didn't bother having this time around.
Great atmosphere and very popular with the locals, also had a good evening and lovely chat to the waitering staff. Can recommend this and will return in the future.
It's really ooohkaaayyy. In a 'just about nearly good but good for the price if you're feeling generous I suppose' sort of way. Rooms, service and food hit and miss. Big hits and big misses.
Lovely garden. We didn't eat but the food looked nice. Historical building with a nice atmosphere.
Have stayed numerous times and always had a lovely break. Looking a bit tired on our last visit but the staff and food made up for the decor. We had a superb room and couldn't complain at the price. Definitely worth a trip especially in the summer with a Thames walk.
Please don't bother. Was such a lovely place a few years ago but has since been taken over and has nosedived in quality.
Bath was missing a plug, when I called reception to ask for one, they weren't sure what a bath plug was and asked me to spell it for them. Armed with the correct spelling, they were still unable to correctly ascertain what exactly a bath plug was so popped up for a site visit before promptly returning with a plug taken from the kitchen...
Very poor service. We struggled to find some water. Food was mediocre
Spacebar Productions Selfie Pod in the Garden Room at Olde Bell
Food is amazing but the bathroom was not fantastic in the room, could have done with some work!
Rubbish slow service, extremely expensive drinks, burgers were missing onions and gherkins, 12.5% service charge and when we mentioned that the food was not as ordered we got ignored.
The deluxe bedroom 27 was massive. Huge double bed. Room very warm. The breakfast was buffet style but plentiful and tasty. The Hotel was olde world. Hurley is a beautiful area.
Someone has invested well and cares about this quirky old hotel. Comfortable rooms, good vening meal and a breakfast buffet to put most to shame. Small wonder there's a film star roster of visitors and supporters.
Great setting, pub nice and old, garden great....food just lets it's all down....service they really try....bit of investment is needed to really make it a destination, not just campers and boat cruise lot
Our regional meetings take place here and the venue is always well set uo and provides a good lunch. Staff are friendly and helpful.
Fairly clean, bottom of walls in bathroom dirty from mop going also g them, hair in the bottom of the shower. Comfy bed, food not too bad, bit over priced and not alot of choice if you want something plain with no fuss
Waited 10 mins at the bar, 50 mins for food and it was one of the worst meals we've ever eaten. Staff were slow and unhelpful. It's in the Good Pub Guide but goodness knows why.
Medieval building; pleasant village location. If the walls don't look straight, it's not because you are drunk! Large barn for wedding reception and such like across the road.
I've been here several times now. The rooms are always impeccable, and the restaurant food is scrummy and delicious. Would definitely recommend it !
It has a large outside garden and also you can stay overnight
Having stayed here on a number of occasions after flying into the Uk its about time to write a review.
We like this place - from Heathrow its a short 30 minutes or so drive and makes an excellent evening stop for dinner and breakfast
On our last visit we invited our family to join us so we were staying as a small group. Generally we always book the barn/rooms/buildings that are across from the main 'inn/pub' and which can open onto a garden / courtyard area.
Generally for the accommodation it is typical 'inn' style so rustic but we've found the rooms always clean/well kept. One of our family did mention that you can hear the other rooms quite clearly - easy remedy is just be tired when you hit the sack!
We've eaten dinner on each visit and have found the menu offering a good choice and the setting is modern / rustic so after travelling various places offers a good Uk (posh old close to London) charm. Wine list is good and offerings are well priced.
If you are lucky enough to arrive on a sunny / warm day a bottle of vino / drinks outside in the garden is a good idea especially after a long flight.
Breakfast is another good offering and have each time found it very welcoming
If you are an early bird and weather is good you can get a good walk in to and around Henley and the river
Location is also very good as you are on the west side of London meaning accessing the west country easy via the M4 (for those visiting from overseas)
A bit expensive but historically interesting - part of the building is 11th century!
I thought it was very expensive, even considering the area of the country
Avoid avoid avoid....
This hotel looks amazing. The picturesque setting, old world feel should make this an obvious choice when staying locally to Henley, BUT.....
The way this hotel treats its customers is appalling. Arrogant tones from some staff members and a very unhelpful tone will ruin your experience.
Having recently stayed here, the bookings process was difficult, they said we had cancelled our booking when we had not. We also left an item in a room and have been told it is not there. I don t want to call anybody a thief, but the item was left in the room and funnily enough they now can t be found.
BUT, that s not the worst bit. Having called regarding the left items, the non helpful supervisor refused to put me through to a manager, who apparently doesn t talk to customers. I asked for a return call and 48 hours later they still haven t called. They simply believe they are better than that..! Arrogant, arrogant, arrogant......
Do not waste your money, if anything goes wrong you ll be left without any help and on your own.
There are better options locally.
Good luck!
Old iriginal Coaching house turned into a hotel located in the village of Hurley. Just a few miles off the M4 Jnc 8/9.
Rooms are in the old building and the new side across the road as well. There is also a parking area on this side of the road.
Fantastic gardens with seating areas and 2 big garden games.
Had a fabulous stay, the room was clean and had a large variety of teas. Breakfast was excellent, both hot and cold food, pastries and fruit. The area is lovely and quiet.
We were invited to a wedding here. This was a really great party, and actually the frame fit. However, we did not like the simple rooms in the rather old style, and they were very expensive. What really pissed me off was that I was ignored at the bar. As a foreigner, it is very difficult to prevail in such a situation. But as a guest this should not be necessary if the waiter was attentive enough. Nice setting for a wonderful English wedding (all the best to the bridal couple!), But the drumming with the hotel was not quite right. Luckily that was not so important at this moment :-)
Nice place, typically English, you think Miss Marple is coming around the corner. Very good food and great event location.
As far as hotels work, it works- just. No curtains in the rooms so they get nice, natural sunlight as early as 5am! Beds have some sort of lovely plastic mattress protector so that's nice and loud, not to mention sweaty in the heat. The single-glazed windows let the lovely sound of birdsong and HGVs into the rooms, and every time a vehicle goes past the road outside all the doors in my current room rattle about. Some of the rooms also have a lovely 'parfum' of "Damp"- by water vapour.
Lovely olde pub, bags of character, good food and beer.
I have shot 2 weddings at The Olde Bell in Hurley. One I covered in winter and one in summer. I have found it to be a very a lovely setting -both times of the year. The white piano is absolutely lovely - particularly when being played. The grounds are lovely and secluded. There are some nice places for wedding shots. Vanessa White (Emotive Photography)
I would avoid if you can. I couldn't. Visited as part of a work group of 16. Discovered after first night my door was not locking and had been kept open all night and all day whilst I was out.
Numerous calls later, it was fixed.
Very plain basic rooms with not so nice stains on the carpet and the hygiene of the remote control was disgusting.
Problem not just with my room, a colleague had to ask for another room due to it being filthy and then second room had no room service and has to get towels themselves and take it to room across the car park.
Wouldn't recommend, stay away.
Lovely old pub, very large garden. Excellent Sunday roast.
The hotel was in a lovely setting. It was clean and the rooms were spacious. Unfortunately we were awoken by their delivery driver at 6 in the morning. Followed by a faulty water pump making repetitive noises from 6.20. A disappointing nights sleep. Then to cap it all off the 'Hot' Breakfast was cold.
Comfortable accomodation with fantastic character, food ok, ok for business meeting making the most of space and facilities although not as comfortable and practical as some more modern locations
My wife and I came to The Olde Bell for lunch on Saturday after seeing it recommended in Conde Nast Traveller. I checked the menu online and it looked nice. On arrival at 12, we sat in the beer garden, which is large and pretty, but from that moment on, the experience was deeply disappointing.
I approached a shack in the garden obviously set up to serve food, which had various staff standing around who told me that they weren t serving until 12:30 so I could order inside if I was hungry. I went inside to get drinks and menus but I was then told that I couldn t order from the inside menu if I was sitting outside and would have to wait until the outside kitchen was serving food, even though lots of people outside had the inside menus and people were obviously ordering from the inside menu to be served outside a waiter actually approached our table with some food from the inside menu. My wife then went to queue at the outside kitchen, and was told that they had a problem with one of the grills and to go inside to order; on going inside and queuing at the bar, she was told to go back outside, where there was now a long queue.
Fantastic food. I'd certainly go back for a Sunday lunch. Beers could be more exciting.
Is an old but beautiful building. Room transfer only. S. Night visit of another transfer ..... But for the rest .3 stars
Nice stop off whilst walking part of the Thames path. Friendly staff and nice sandwich......
Lovely setting. Our room was bare. No headboard, pictures, curtains, which was odd. Food was good but pricey.
I love this place, the entire team is super friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Our brides and grooms who have married here have all given it 5 star rating.
