Where do I start :( booked 2 adults 1 child but only gave us a room for 2 adults, while we where out they added a army bed to the room, once we got back the TV had 8 working channels missing itv, channel4, C5 and ITV2 ect and trying to tune in other channels was impossible because of a pin on it.....bed was clean but pillows as way too soft and the mattress unforgiving and hard so woke in the morning stiff and sore, shower was hot but dirty and spewed water on the floor and so much lime scale that taken 5 mins could be cleaned off. my wife's side of the bed also had no table/unit or a plug socket, very little in the way of tea/coffee and 4 skimmed milk is less than ideal, on the plus side they did decaffeinated coffee. And when we tried to book out there was no staff about... So put key on front desk and left, but now come to my biggest hate about this place.... The door! We got room 41 on the out building which was at the front of the building with the main entry door next to it, which when closing not only banged shut but shook the whole room.. so from 5am I was woken ever 10-15 mins by people openin
Another great nights stay following our trip back to Heathrow, before heading home.
Great breakfast as always.
Thoroughly recommend
Cancelled my room the night before. If that's what you like then this is the place for you.
Great garden for summer. V busy on Sunday lunch si be early.
Stayed in the old building for 2 nights. Good size room, well appointed, and with character.
Lovely anniversary meal here. Very good service with friendly staff.
Popped in for a late lunch and made it just in time to have food. Had the burger and it was great! The bacon marmalade was an absolute highlight for me and worked so well with the burger. The actual burger patty was really tasty and cooked just to how I like it. The fennel slaw added a nice touch and worked well with all elements from the dish providing a slight tang to the dish. Overall would recommend!
We got married in the beautiful library. The friendly staff made sure the day went how we imagined it!
Such a charming and relaxing atmosphere!
This is an old but fantastic hotel. Good range of rooms and nice outdoor seating area.
Standard pub fare good selection of beers nice decor freindly staff
Brilliant old Inn dating back to 1135. Hotel with fine dining. Great place to visit. Recommended
We stayed overnight in one of the rooms in the main building and had dinner for 11 in the restaurant. It was excellent from start to finish.
The staff were welcoming and friendly, all extremely personable and willing to go the extra mile to accommodate our needs. The room was gorgeous with lovely views over the garden area and well equipped. All very comfortable and easy.
Dinner was fabulous, service was excellent and charming. The food was popular with 11 different tastes. The separate room for dinner within the restaurant meant we had our own bespoke environment yet were never left unattended when needed.
Breakfast the next day was well serviced despite the hotel clearly being fully booked and busy with an event. We would never have known that the night before. They still went out of their way to accoodate us a couple. It felt personal and caring.
We would and most probably will, return.
Reminds me of fawlty towers. Sadly a great location but with such dreadful service. Rooms are so comfy is the reason I come back as I sleep so well. The rest is chaos with good food . Shame realy as it good be so great
Very nice country pub with good food and friendly staff
Worst service in the area so far! It took 90 minutes to get some food, slow and always giving stupid reasons. If you can avoid this place. Not worth it.
Beautiful location, nice staff, clean and stylish rooms and a rather nice breakfast.
Nice pub with amazing garden. Some of the food looked good but the sandwiches were average.
My son got married at The Old Bell last year it was a beautiful reception in a lovely place Holywell D Vaughan situation opposite the main pub 20 car park accommodation and food was second to none just in the lovely place to get married they really recommend it
Wrapped in nature and an environment typical of England. Oldbelle is a place with history, quiet, beautiful and with comfortable and spacious rooms
Lovely old inn, great service, great food, great beer
Beautiful venue and location. The service was also great.
Beautiful spot great garden not enough beers though...stella 4 percent who does that in a traditional pub
Nice looking hotel but food very limited to 4 choices in bar area which are very expensive. Food in restaurant area again limited to a few choices and extortionately priced. Not family friendly. Perfect just to stop for a drink.
Lovely hotel, pleasant staff, good rooms, however ours was over Bar/lounge,old beams let every sound resonate into our room on a Saturday night, very difficult to sleep !
Lovely staff and looking forward to celebrating there :)
Excellent Breakfast and service in a historic 13th century Inn. Hurley village a good visit of early English village.
Lovely old relaxing pub with very friendly service. Feels like you've stepped back in time! The food was great as well.
Lovely rooms in general, needs some work.
The Olde Bell has some lovely rooms in the old building. Be warned though, it's a very, very warm atmosphere! Great beds, lovely views and all the history you could want for in the way of past guests and glories!
But..... The food was lacking. Small portions, some interesting interpretations on how things are cooked and could do with a bit more choice.
On arrival we had lunch of a burger and a selection big cheeses. Both were very good.
For evening meal my partner had the burger I'd had at lunch as she had been a bit jealous, and you could have used it to re-sole a shoe!! I have the venison and felt the portion size was very small. Five small pieces of meat and a single roast potato was very well done and extremely tasty, but don't go in hungry!!
Breakfast was disappointing. But I have never been a fan of a buffet breakfast, things just don't work when kept warm for any period of time. The coffee was excellent though. Really good.
Staff were an eclectic bunch. The check in staff were superb, helping more than necessary when someone hit my car in their car park. The barmaid was a pleasure, the waiters were ummmm hysterical? And should be at home if they ever apply to work in Torquay!!
Went to the Olde Bell today. Must admit I was surprised on a number of counts. Slow and insufficient bar staff to meet not overly busy number of customers, arguments with audible expletives between bar and kitchen staff, a strange hierarchy More
Lovely hotel, very nice setting and garden and room. Just wished I did not have to take a alternatively freezing then burning shower. Some plumbing and the experience would be 5 stars!
Great for weddings and parties. Popular at weekends. Staff were attentive and looked after us and our guests.
Cracking location, great food and beer just a little disorganised
A huge disappointment to find the place shabby, run down and nowhere near the standard under the previous management. Lunch was all right but I would not go there again.
Sill to upset and waiting for them to response in case you have forgotten us we were there November 6 for Sunday lunch we were booked in for 2 45 there were 8 of us !!!!!!!!!
Beautiful rooms. Check out at 12 which is great! Cute pub and restaurant attached too
Very friendly and extremely accommodating.
The manager and staff went out of their way to ensure that we had a lovely evening and meal when we arrived and due to an oversight by US we found no meal had been booked.
Despite being fully booked an extra table was found and we were able to enjoy a wonderful meal and celebrate our anniversary as we planned.
Our accommodation was warm and extremely comfortable at a very reasonable price.
Thanks again to all the staff.
Wonderful old world charm comfy bed I'd a little large for the room. Helpful staff azing dood
Fab!
We were upgraded in our room. The room was amazing.
Service was good. Breakfast was tasty. The grounds were nice to have a little walk around in. Good location to get to hand and flowers for dinner.
I once stayed here for a training course and absolutely loved the place. The building has so much character with a spooky mysterious feel to it. Food served was delicious too. Something really nice about this place, get a nice feeling even though such an old building.
Fantastic venue. Bar service was slow and sloppy. Selection of spirit in the barn bar was poor.
Dreadful room, we booked a luxury room which is nothing like the pictures (see website v reality attached - guess which three are reality!). That said pics on the website were taken in 2008 according to metadata so the whole thing is a con. Curtains falling off, bathrobes falling apart, stained old spice from a tip looking sorry for itself.......don't waste your money and avoid at all costs.
Man on reception is also fairly unwelcoming and having been told there were no alternatives he then immediately offered one to a couple behind us who were also unhappy.
The Olde Bell is an old coaching inn dating from 1135, tucked away in the small Berkshire village of Hurley. The main building's gorgeously timber-framed with nooks, crannies and winding staircases, whilst there's other more slightly modern areas that encompass most of the bedrooms as well as the capacity to host weddings for up to 150 people (of which one was taking place when we arrived on Saturday afternoon).
We came for lunch, between visiting family roots in Shiplake and going to a 60th birthday party in Marlow (more on that later), and were very glad we did. The wedding party's old Routemaster in the car park lent even more of a quintessential feel to the day (villages around Henley are particularly picturesque) and the low ceilings and tiled floors of the Bell's interior were a real comfort.
There's a few different areas to explore - the main bar, a bar dining area, private rooms and the main restaurant that gives onto a pretty patio and garden. We were given a 'booth' to ourselves (below) and felt right at home in the dining room, with its mismatched railway sleeper tables and grey-green painted chairs. We were given some warm homemade bread whilst we pored over the daily-changing menu and somehow managed to choose from the amazing dishes on offer.
We started with asparagus (deliciously raw and peppery), quail's egg and garlic mayonnaise, and a ballantine of Scottish salmon with dill and minted creme fraiche. Enticingly served on slates and pristine white crockery, we fell in love with the flavours. For mains, my mum had tender pork belly on a bed of lentils with cider jus whilst I had herb-crusted lamb with garlic mash. We shared a generous portion of seasonal greens and dove straight in. My lamb was served brilliantly pink and the garlic mash was perfect (and quite like a fondant potato) - the only chagrin was my poor decision to choose lamb when I'm not its biggest fan. The dish was delicious but I'm not quite converted. Mum's pork belly was divine. As a treat, we just had to share a dessert - a gorgeously smooth and rich creme brulee with the lightest homemade shortbread we've ever tasted.
The price for food is very good given the presentation and the quality. The staff were attentive and friendly, but not intrusive, and let us explore the inn. The meadow-like garden looked a perfect place for long lunches in the summer and we saw quite a few people snacking in the bar - there's no pressure wherever you choose to sit.
The rooms (there are 50 of them) look gorgeous, given the shots on the website. Affordable too with some very special offers that throw in champagne, chocolates and roll-top baths. The Olde Bell is perfect for a jaunt out of the city - a stone's throw from all the fun at Henley, or even just for a country escape - and somewhere I'd definitely come back to.
A firm four-and-a-half out of five (a half point deducted for my hasty choice of a main that didn't quite manage to convert me).
Simply put: a mini Heaven situated in the middle of the nature.
Fantastic beer garden, however their beer is far too expensive. Didn't eat or stay here, however both looked good.
I was at the Olde Bell for a meal and the food was simply delicious and the service was great. Great location with ample parking space.
Love this place. Can't wait for my next stay. Beautiful rooms and a superb bar/restaurant for dinner.
Do not go if temperature is above 20C. The rooms do not have aircon, very poor window ventilation, and no fans. We asked for a fan upon arrival in the overheated room and were told 'we will see what we can do'(!) Nothing ever turned up. More
Avoid this place. Slightly surreal, Fawlty Towers-esque experience when we tried to eat dinner here on a Sat night. A large wedding taking place but it seemed all staff had been seconded to that and there was no one competent to serve. Culminated in being told our starters had not been served 40 minutes after ordering because there was no one in the kitchen. We left. The management of the restaurant is atrocious. They don't value or deserve your custom.
Beautiful building and excellent service. Hosted a brilliant wedding. Very professional.
Had lunch here recently and it's safe to say I wouldn't return...
Charming and beautiful hotel. Lovely quiet location. Good rooms.
Service Poor. I went in to order food, queued at the bar, and she said have a seat someone will be over to give you a menu. Nobody came. I sat there for 20 mins. I then found a menu myself and queued again to order. I was hungry and thirsty and disappointed it took so long to get a drink
Very comfortable bed. Lovely shower. Great wedding venue
We stayed in the pub section. Our 'deluxe double' room was poorly equipped (no bathtub and only a double bed; rather than the king size beds that some other rooms had). The rooms were also quite shabby, with a lack of attention to detail (not particularly thouroughly cleaned or maintained).
For the price I would expect a lot more.
The staff were friendly and helpful, but bars for the wedding party only usually had one member of staff, resulting in long queues.
I checked in here, really expecting the room to be old, and ugly. But was super surprised with the clean modern look it had instead. The bed was huge and comfortable, and the shower was equally as large and powerful too. The reception to check in and out was painless and efficient. Stayed here for a week, and going back for another week. Also - if you need a hotel for company bookings - they offer a company set rate - which was an added bonus. Definitely worth the money.
A very old Inn. We visited for a relaxed evening meal, which was well cooked and tasty. Recommended.
The Olde Bell really is a wonderful find - whether it's for a relaxed wedding day, a nice lunch with friends on a Sunday afternoon or a weekend away. The setting is gorgeous, the food is amazing and the staff are always friendly & helpful. As a wedding photographer, I really enjoy working with Thomas, Lara and the rest of the staff and wouldn't hesitate recommending The Olde Bell & Malt House to future wedding couples and friends. I have now photographed 5 weddings there and I hope to be back at The Olde Bell again very soon!
Amazing food. Bar & rooms could be a little cosier but value for money was great. Will be coming back.
This is a lovely pub with rooms. Everything was good although breakfast service was extremely slow and many if the items that said were on offer on the menu weren't, so it would be good if they updated them. The pub us only a short walk from the Thames so we were able to walk to Marlow in about half an hour. Lunch in the pub was great with a choice of homemade soups, and in the evening they kept the bar open until the last one of us went to bed. We were also able to check in earlier than advertised. Overall great value.
Good food, decent (but old) rooms, amazing beer garden, worth a stop
Went for lunch; food was amazing while the wait was appalling. Waited an hour and a half without mains to be offered dessert. Another 20 mins before dinner arrived.
Driven by a Basil Faulty type man in the restaurant that would be better off away from a customer facing role.
Will not return.
Awful room, next to the air con units. Shabby and outdated.
Went to a wedding reception there at the barn ok but the bar service was dismal never know it so slow the bar staff didn't have a clue what they were doing ended up going over the road to the bar where the service was much better they need to sort it out there was big queues at the bar in the barn where people where waiting to be served I could have done better and I haven't worked behind a bar for over 30 years
Sadly, I shouldn't even give the place a one star.
So disappointed with the way the place looks now, very shabby with torn, worn uncomfortable seats. The high back bench like seats had no cushions so they were very hard and at the back of my bench it felt like sand had been left there so dirty seats as well.
Once the coffee was ordered it took ages before someone brought it to the table.
I remember The Olde Bell as being a very quaint and homely pub with a decent restaurant. However although we didn't have a meal one look at the dining room with the same high back benches was enough to ensure that we won't be dining there any time soon.
Wonderful wedding venue. Staff very friendly. Food pretty darn good.
Fantastic venue for our daughter and new husband s wedding. The staff couldn't be any more helpful and helped the day go smoothly and without a hitch. The accommodation was excellent and this was rounded off by a lovely breakfast the next morning. Well done to all the staff and wedding planners on a great professional job. Highly recommended venue for anyone planning their own wedding.
Lovely garden complete with swooping Red Kites! Amazing!
A great place to have a leisurely pint. Built in 1135AD it is a quirky wonderful building that serves great beer.
