As an affectionate of free walking tours, this was the best one I've ever done! Mitko was fun, enthusiast and informative and made our tour very nice! We could explore the heart of Sofia and also have the nice perspective of a native! 10/10 would recommend

I am always impressed at how much value I get out of free tours that I carry extra cash to tip the guide after. It was the same in Sofia, where our guide, Niki, shared so many stories that pulled the history of the City together with the places we encountered on our walk. I learned a lot about the influences of the Ottomans, Germans, and Soviet/Russians - among others.
The tour was two hours in the rain or shine (rain in my case - there are loads of shops nearby selling umbrellas and hats if needed).

Pretty cool tour to get to know Sofia at first sight and the history to the country / city.

Tour Guide Niki has made this very exciting, funny and very easy to understand (English language).

Tip: make directly on the first day, then go out again the spots. To the tour are still tips on other sightseeing, shopping and culinary spots.

The tour is free, who likes, gives a tip at the end.

Our guide was Tommy (Tomislav). He was very enthusiastic and full of energy. Before you do anything in Sofia go on this tour! You ll see all the significant places and hear some history about Sofia and Bulgaria. Afterwards you can kindly ask your tour guide for recommendations about other places to go, food and drinks to try etc.
We definitely recommend this tour and please leave a generous tip because this tour is worth every leva

Had a great tour with Boyan, but what I appreciated most was the booklet they give out with recommendations for food, bars, shopping, day trips, etc. The company also offers a number of other tours so there s something for everyone wanting to not only see Sofia but learn something and experience it.

If you don't plan to participate in the free walking tour, the tour guide is lively and interesting, allowing you to learn about the history and culture of many cities, and also recommend another culture tour (12 euros) but definitely worth it. The guide will introduce traditional cuisine and Bulgarian Ethnicity and history. Great trip.
Tour guide Lora so good and adorable. No reason do not join this wonderful tour. And culture tour also recommend to join.12 euro.it worth. Tour guide kathy is a nice tour guide to tell the story about Bulgaria and also introduce lots of Bulgarian food.

Great tour! Just over 2 hours and you see all the main sights in Sofia centre. Niki was our guide and he is very knowledgeable about everything and also funny :) ! A must do if you plan on visiting Sofia, as on your own, you would not grasp all the meaning behind most things. Great stories, unique view on things. Please tip well, they deserve it!!

Try it for a two-hour city center tour and all you need to see in Sofia.
The children who organize it are all wonderful and make the tour unique. As the name says it's free. All you need to do is find yourself in front of the palace of justice while it suits you. 11:00 or 18:00

Perfect to get to know the city center and to love Sofia! We were on the road with Mitko and couldn't have gotten a better tour guide. With super English and his exciting narrative style, he has packed not only geography and history, but also a pinch of political criticism into the leadership. And that without letting boredom arise for a second. Big recommendation!

Sofia in Bulgaria

Sofia in Bulgaria

The region is the site of an ancient human settlement dating back to the Neolithic

During antiquity Sofia was then called Serdica
Conquered by the Romans, it was then the capital of the province of Dacia

In the III rd century the Romans built thick walls around the city

Important stage on the Roman road from Naissus to Byzantium (now Istanbul, Turkey)

In 809. the city was conquered by the Bulgarians and it received the name of Sredets

It is quickly considered as one of the most important feudal cities and as a strategic pole

In 1096 the knights confined there during the first crusade

However, it declined in the 18th century when the pashas chose to reside in Monastir
The Bania Bachi mosque, built in 1567, is one of the rare vestiges of this period.

In 1879 following the Russian-Turkish war Sofia becomes the capital of the principality of Bulgaria

It quickly changes its face transforming into a modern western metropolis

The plans drawn up in 1881-1882 were followed by a period of construction of brick buildings and traffic lanes

Several buildings and parks in the current city center date back to this time.

The city council approved in 1900 the emblem of Sofia and its motto: "Grows but does not age"

In September 1944 Sofia was liberated by the troops of the Red Army commanded by Marshal Tolboukhine

In 1992, the Government chose, in honor of Saint Sophie la Martyre, September 17 as the day of the city of Sofia.

Walked into this expecting nothing much. Skipped out with full heart having been blown away by the brilliance of our dynamic guide Stanislav's attention to detail, wit, and magnetic use of language to describe a city that I had already known and loved, but now feel I much better understand. Definitely do not miss this incredible opportunity! And try to find Stanislav if you can, though I'm sure the caliber of all the guides is high!

Absolutely phenomenal, I've had the chance to see most of the places the tour covers before, but without a -real- introduction -background history- they were meaningless... It's absolutely free of charge (you can donate something tho) and tour guides are extremely friendly and nice.

We recommend. Two entertaining hours and recommendations on where to eat and drink well are free.
A "communism tour" is also available at 16:00 (Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday), the same starting point, 3-3.5 hours. Cost 20 BGN ( 10).

I've been to several free tours and this one was just bad. The tour guide always stayed on script and never added in any anecdotes or made it seem like he was proud of Bulgaria. And his jokes were borderline insulting.

Honestly, I would recommend skipping this 'free tour' and research a paid tour.

Stojan was very motivated and speaks very good English! The tour is qualitatively in the top league settle! The two hours unfortunately go around very quickly and the impressions, as well as the information about Sofia are very impressive and very interesting. I claim that this tour is a must for every Sofia visitor!

Excellent organization. On this occasion, I would like to point out that you should be careful with taxis in Sofia. They are safe, but they treat tourists really badly (they inflate prices exaggeratedly). This is our experience of course. Sofia still deserves to be visited :)
