We went there for their Valentine's dinner, which was a 5 course pre-fix menu. Super small portions which was a good thing because it wasn't good enough to eat much. The lobster risotto didn't have any lobster in it, the beef tenderloin medallions were well done and tough. I would have thought that at $320 for a couple the food would have been much better quality. Plus they pack you in there like sardines.

One of my favorite places in Kansas City for a nice meal. I often choose a cold and a hot appetizer for my meal rather than having an entree, as their apps are all so good. Try to go on a Wednesday as their fried chicken special is also fabulous.

Valentines Day Menu.

Valentines Day Menu.

Table for 4 on a very busy February 14, 2019. Was a bit disappointed to find out it was a set single menu for the evening. Wow, was I wrong. Not only was the food fantastic, but not ordering anything but cocktails was liberating and relaxing. Great job Chef and thanks to a great staff for a great evening.

Absolutely the best food in KC. Amazing chef, excellent atmosphere. Service is phenomenal. Wines are limited but quality. Dessert menu is absoltely wonderful, and they do an excellent job of updating menu offerings each season. Try whichever seasonal pasta appetizer they have, they're all great!

Frequently hosts full course dinners, offers a sunday brunch menu and a discount $10 entree every sunday evening.

We had reservations, and the service was very efficient. That said the waitress was dour-not friendly at all. The food was very expensive, and we left hungry. Seriously, six inch long green beans and about the same amount of tiny gnocchi with one shortrib do not make a meal. It was over 100.00 with tip, and we had to go get ice cream afterwards.

No Michelin stars here, food was not worth discussing. But the stark setting and clinical ambiance, quickly reveals that the place is ran by a code nazi who couldn t be bothered with product quality or customer satisfaction. But rather, was there to assert what little power he had over the clients and staff with not one ounce of dignity or class.

General Manager , Jeff Thrall s, bad personal hygiene and appearance matched his attitude towards any issue that required his discretion. He personally made a birthday meal, for over 10 people, extremely uncomfortable. When faced with the opportunity to serve 2 clients over 25 years old, per their state issued ID s that were present, but expired, he chose to refuse service without any show of sympathy or compassion for the situation. No alternatives presented, he just repeated the same canned response over and over, much like an inner city DMV employee.

Don t waste your time on their Story , it needs a new writer. We will wait until owners cycle through this management failure, you should do the same.

My wife ordered a salad , took one bite and found it was too sour to eat. Unfortunately we could not get our waiters attention and by the time he finally returned she no longer was interested in a replacement. Normally under this circumstance a legitimate dining establishment would remove an uneaten item from the bill. The chef took the position that the salad was "prepared as intended" and refused to remove it from the bill.

I ordered the Ribeye medium rare plus. One side was done medium well and the other side rare. The waiter explained that is normally how they prepare steaks. Well lets just say that was a first for me.

This is a place where the Chef feels he comes first. Overall a disappointing and expensive experience. We won't be bothering with future visits.

Food looked and tasted amazing! The restaurant took all precautions to ensure everyone was safe. But, what sends Story over the top was the courtesy, professionalism & warmth of the staff...OUTSTANDING experience!

I am very impressed by the service in this restaurant. The quality of food is more similar to the food I experience while traveling abroad. Each item is meticulously placed on the plate and the flavors are consciously combined to create a visual treat as well as palatable taste. The prices are more then the average restaurants but well worth it. Do yourself a favor and take a chance on this restaurant. You won t regret it

Service is impeccable, the dishes all fresh and inviting. They make their own bread daily. We asked to split a salad & chef gave us each one (no extra charge). A seafood risotto was delightful and huge. Veal dish very tender. All in all a five star experience.

Story serves some of the finest food in Kansas City. The chefs and staff are incredible, and this is a fantastic place for a date or a small group celebration. They deserve all the awards they've won.

We had a couple's date night here and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Great service from both our waiter and the sommelier. The other couple was very pregnant and the wait staff was happy to quickly bring extra bread. ;) The short rib was excellent, the lobster bisque quite good. We all ordered separate appetizers, entrees and desserts and shared. I highly recommend this restaurant.

My husband and I have dined at story quite a few times over the past several years. The food is always impeccable. Beautiful flavors that just make you say wow. I will say that we have experienced rude/snobby servers at story, not every time but more than once. I've been willing to overlook it since the food is just so dang good. Going into it you should know it's a fine dining establishment with small portion sizes and higher price tags than your average restaurant. You get what you pay for, amazing food costs more. :)

We visited the Story during KC Restaurant Week, and everything was perfect and worth of our hard-earned dollar. The ambiance was great, the service just superb, the food tasty, refreshing and prepared with love. The Caesar salad refreshing and crisp, the swordfish was tasty, fresh and generous with nicely made side of potatoes puree, artichokes and olives- one of the best I have ever eaten. Deserts were made with care and love as well - the bread pudding w/fruit was just perfect and refreshingly light. They did not cheap out and they showed off their best, i.e. they understood the purpose of the Restaurant Week, and therefore they won new patrons this evening.

We had a very nice dinner, but our waiter had a HUGE attitude and it made all of us feel extremely uncomfortable ! It seemed that he was doing us a favor! Presented us with the bill without asking if we wanted to look at a dessert menu! Guess he felt like none of us needed it!
He probably wanted to go home, lucky to have a job in this economy, but in no way, he should have treated us like we probably shouldn t have dined there!
I ll be back, but will let Story know that we DON T want him as our waiter!

Story is an upscale restaurant in Prairie Village that provides not only great service but also outstanding food prepared exactly the way you desire. We were cordially greeted and seated and then very promptly attended by the wait staff. The wait staff was very menu knowledgeable and had suggestions based on your request. There is a full bar and a wine list to be envied. Our meal was outstanding and consisted of a variety of a la carte choices or pre fixe meal +/- wine pairings. A great evening!!

By far our favorite restaurant in the Kansas City area. It has a very comfortable atmosphere. You will dictate the spend of your service and you will never be rushed in and out. The table will be your for the evening if you so desire. There is virtually no staff turnover here and that means a lot to us. You can trust Chef Carl -- his food is always fresh, creative and properly prepared. Story has the best seafood in town.

Sunday brunch needs a rethinking. Spent $30 for two people and we both left hungry. For example, granola, yogurt and berries is $8 for a smearing of yogurt on a fancy place, 6 berries and 3 spoonfuls of granola. I definitely prefer quality over quantity but sometimes you can take a good idea too far. On the other hand, the service was excellent and atmosphere was amazing. Might be back to try dinner some time when I'm wearing a tighter belt.

Probably the worst customer service. Food is 2 stars. Owner is the rudest person and very cold personality and a horrible attitude. If you are charging that much you need to learn how to talk with people. DO NOT WASTE your money or time to go there

It was the perfect COVID anniversary dinner: we sat outside and had a lovely evening. Started with the house salad and the heirloom tomatoes. Then shared the short ribs entree as an appetizer, then had the soft crab and rib eye for entrees. Great service, delicious food, and delightful ambiance!

We visited this restaurant for Valentine s Day where there was a 5-course set menu. While we did enjoy the atmosphere of the restaurant, we were very disappointed in the overall service and taste of the dishes. Our server hardly paid attention to us, not acknowledging when our water glasses were empty or asking if there was anything we needed. The food itself was extremely subpar. The hot dishes came out luke warm and flavoring just seemed off. Understand you all were cooking for a lot of valentiners, but when we re paying for $100 per person for a romantic evening at your restaurant, the expectation is that that your experience is spectacular. I would go ahead and cross this restaurant off your list if you re wanting to try. Not worth your time or money.

Everything on the menu is great, but if you aren't getting the short ribs, you aren't ordering the right thing. I've been ruined for short ribs at any other place - so I get them at Story to experience ultimate satisfaction.

Birthday dinner gone bad. That suggests we actually had dinner. They could not even get our dinner served after 1.5 hours. No excuses and no apologies. They had limited wines and limited meals, I expect to read a bankruptcy announcement soon.

Like many others, we had the worst service. I found a FLY in my risotto and when I brought it the servers attention he couldn't have cared less. He refused to take it off our bill. I should report them to the health department.

I've waited long enough to share this review. I reached out to the Manager the day after our visit to share my opinion and review of his restaurant.

We ordered the much talked about street tacos. Three different kinds, each suppose to make four servings. The meat portion though small probably was an actual "serving size". The problem was the toppings provided were the portion amount for one entree. A tablespoon of salsa, a tablespoon of sour cream, etc.

We waited a while in hopes that our server would return. He didn't so we began making 12 tacos with the condiments that were provided at every other table around us for one entree.

When our server finally stopped back by I commented on the extremely small portions of toppings asking why we didn't receive a "set" of toppings for each entree... his response... the tables to small and you can ask for anything additional you need. I asked him why they just didn't put "three portions" in a bigger bowl if multiple people order... that's not the way the Chef does it.

The next day I spoke with Management to share concerns and make a suggestion of a larger bowl. He was most professional and very open to feedback assuring me he'd share with the Chef and get back to me by the weeks end. Two months later...no response.

Unfortunately this lack of response has soured me on giving this local restaurant another go.

Mediocre meal spoiled by arrogance. We enjoyed the first two courses and the attentive wait staff. Unfortunately the halibut was terribly overcooked. I should have guessed I was in for some trouble when they brought steak knives over in preparation for the halibut. The awful preparation was one thing it became a real issue when they refused to take it off the bill. The general manager was rude and without any interest in making things right. I ended up paying for a meal I couldn't eat. Apparently I have more integrity than the chef: I paid my bill while the chef would NOT stand by his dish. I asked to speak to the manager and the chef but neither would discuss the dish. I followed up via email but could not get a response. I wanted to return to this restaurant since everything else was good but based on this experience I cannot.

Be warned: it's a very high priced "fine dining" establishment. Portion sizes are small so that you can "enjoy each course", but come with some lofty pricetags. Of the whole 6 entrees, the prices range from roughly $25-$40. I got the Braised Beef Short Ribs, which, while delicious, was a small, piece of fatty pot roast with about 10 gnocchi, a few crumbs of bacon and some green beans. The food was great, but very small for the price. Like every joke you've ever heard about overpriced tiny portion meals come to life.

Mmmmmm, so delicious! We dined there with another couple and none of us were shy about sharing so we could all try several things. The foie gras was divine and probably my favorite. My only complaint is that it was small and didn't last More
