would give minus star if I could! full on neglect and malpractice from prenatal to postnatal! had given birth there a few months ago.
Shocking experience! I trust I would not have a worse hospital experience than this for the rest of my life. My water broke at 35 weeks, got admitted. the 2nd day I went into active preterm labour. I asked to have pain relief and doctor review constantly but the midwife said she cant find the doctor! one doctor did come but left without doing anything, though he said he would come back but never returned! I wanted early epidural and what I got was panadol! I also received next to no monitoring or assessment during active preterm premature labour! I waited 7 hours from when I asked for pain relief to when I got epidural; 4 hours from when I asked to see a doctor to when a doctor actually reviewed me! the 1st time my cervix was checked, I was already 5-6 cm dilated! I could not stop shaking and almost fainted due to intense pain, and the midwife and doctor neglected me, despite I was a high risk patient!
postnatal: suturing doctor left a 20x10cm dressing pack in me for 5 days, and I passed it out myself on day5! I could not sit or walk properly after delivery due to intense pain, could not wee, went back to hospital twice and got readmitted eventually. the pain was beyond description! turned out the sutures were stretched open and tissues were damaged and mashed! it didnt get re-stitched either! as a result, the wound took over a month to heal and did not heal well either!
Baby was also not taken good care and neglected! There are so many other issues regarding this experience!

Long wait times. Careless unhelpful nurses. Patients left in pain & uninformed of wait times. Staff sit together to "chat", ignoring patients in obvious distress, left after 3+ hours of this treatment. Culture of nurse's attitudes here needs serious addressing.( I am a retired nurse).p.s. I saw no senior RNs walking through , reminding junior RN's what is expected of them & what they are paid to do. Are all senior staff given " early retirement " to cut costs? This is a false economy & to the detriment of patients.

Having been to the emergency dept myself I could not believe that each patient is given their own file folder to look after themselves.
A nurse had taken mine at one point whilst doing my observations and then I was asked some time later where it is! (That in itself I found very unprofessional)
I asked the Dr treating me if he can give me a discharge letter with my test results and diagnosis and he said he will definitely fax it to my Dr.
One week later when I saw my own GP she hadn t received anything!
When I was waiting in the emergency waiting room I was shocked at the amount of swearing and negative talk amongst nursing staff. I felt very sorry for other patients whom were waiting too as I witnessed several people been spoken to in an abrupt and insensitive manner.
I have had 3 family members admitted to this hospital and each one was discharged prematurely. Another person I know was discharged whilst still heavily intoxicated and medicated with opioids after attempting suicide and that person then got in their car and crashed into things before arriving home and continued to drive recklessly till found by police. The duty of care at Flinders is appalling from my experience and what I ve witnessed.
When my mother was admitted earlier this year, code blue intervention on third night and then on the fourth day the nurse told me she was being transferred to QEH and asked me to take her there in my car.
My mother wasn t even able to walk at that point. I told the nurse there is no way I m going to attempt getting her in my car as I wouldn t be able to physically achieve that and that I couldn t believe I was been asked to do that. Her reply was Well you ll be waiting quite awhile for ambulance transfer .
That really didn t matter as that was the safest way to transfer and as it turned out she wasn t transferred, she continued to stay in Flinders almost two weeks.
Sometimes it s better to drive twice the distance to a hospital where you will receive adequate care.

My dad has been taken by ambulance from Goolwa again with stroke symptoms he is currently ramped but comfortable, hasn't been seen by a doctor and as he suffers a few mental health issues I'm trying to ring emergency to at least get a note to whoever does see him to NOT discharge him again without speaking to me and having all necessary test done...OMG as 2 weeks ago they sent him on his way on his own with no shoes and just his dressing gown

Nurse at desk was rude, Partner screaming in pain, made to wait 2.5 hours, after those 2.5 hours where the last one she was crying non stop from the abdominal pain, she was taken through.... to another chair and made to wait again. I can understand if It wasnt for the fact 7 people arrived after and 5 left, if she was at the top of their priority list for those hours why was she left sobbing in pain and then told to take deep breaths and to stop crying by a doctor. What disgusting service.

Amazing service again from the Emergency Department section A. Dr Amanda N, Nurse Carmel and Aci on triage. My young daughter had breathing difficulties, she was seen within 5 minutes and received outstanding patient care. I have only had good experiences with e staff and patient care at Flinders Medical Centre.

Arrived in Flinders emergency by ambulance Ramped....

Arrived in Flinders emergency by ambulance Ramped. very ill. Put in a chair in emergency room.No water or food or care offered for 6 hours other than a nurse taking my BP and pulse occasionally...both very low. Seen by a junior doc, blood test and IV fluids ordered. But no IV given. Sent home while still sick.
Shortly after arriving home collapsed again, back to Flinders by ambo , same ramping, then on a trolley in the doorway !
For almost 2 hours ! Again no water or food offered.
I had to demand loudly for some care. At last, put in a bed and given some water to drink ....guess what the diagnosis I was given was ....dehydration !
Which I was not when I first arrived but after a full day of not being given any fluids despite my repeated requests, of course I was dehydrated. The RSPCA would have been called if I was an animal !
Later that week, saw my GP to get a proper diagnosis which is quite a serious one. No notes re my emergency room visit sent to GP.
This emergency room needs a total re-organisation.
Triage can only be done properly if the patient is properly assessed immediately on arrival. Not left alone unattended for hours.
More experienced staff needed.
More doctors and more nurses who care are needed.
More common sense also needed.
I see another reviewer says they saved his life....well, they almost took mine.

As primary carer for my disabled pregnant wife I find myself at the birth and women's unit , "Marion" the desk clerk was rude unacknowledged me and only spoke to my wife who doesn't cope well talking to strangers that's why I attended and talk on her behalf , I was completely ignored like I was a controlling male and looked up and down with a snicker before" Marion" the clerk attended to then talk to my wife. This person must have a problem with men or hate men or something because i wasn't looked at thru there entire conversation like I did not exist , people of this level of disgusting do not deserve a job , boomer pretty much .

Was dying from a serious athsma attack, was treated very well, especially by the nurses. The Chinese doctor will not say her name, but I think she needs a break! If not for her I would give 5 stars.

Terrible service. I was in so much pain, for hours and hours waiting in the waiting room. I asked a lady how much longer the wait would be and she gave me full attitude saying it was a busy night. Being a woman who's pregnant I definitely thought I would be a priority. But obviously Flinders suck big time.

Broke my ankle, emergency was good but then went to normal hospital for follow ups, very poor, only open bout four hours in the morning, cram so many people in so both visits there waited minimum 2 hours just to be seen. First visit wasn't recorded so next visit was treated though I was a criminal just because of the last doctors doct of writing anything down! Got told will get physio and someone will send a letter for an appointment, been 2 months and still nothing. Very poor.
Went emergency with partner as she was in a lot of pain had ultrasound which did show up what it was but failed to tell us, 9hrs later sent home, nothing done but treated as though it was nothing.
Partners diabetic got told could have something to eat eventually cause won't need surgery and was low but finally when nurse came back all she had was a few broken biscuits. Very poor

Absolutely disgraceful. Neglectful. Un helpful. Couldn t care less. Shocking wait times. Sent my sister away with life changing diagnosis with no mental health support, no real plan of what happens next, just left in limbo. Everyone she spoke to had different information NO communication. Was told she could just ring to order a script for severe pain management, but when she rang, was told that it was not normal practice to do so. FMC should be ashamed of themselves. This post doesn t even deserve 1 Star.

Pregnant wife and I sat there for 3 hours tonight with her in excruciating pain and when we asked how much longer to see a doctor, they said the beds are full and they didnt know. Did they think to tell us that 3 hours ago?? Left there immediately and came down to the Women's and Children's and were seen STRAIGHT away.

I was referred to the emergency department by my gp due to chest pains, I waited 3 hours, had some tests, a blood test waited another 2 hours for my blood tests but they unfortunately they lost it, they then did a xray in another couple of hours and didn't really tell me what was wrong but said I can either do another test and wait for another 2 hours for the result or I could go home. I was at the hospital for 7 hours, I have never been to the emergency department before, it was definitely a horrible experience.

Quality care.. All nurses and midwives are really helpful and makes your start of "parenting journey" fair bit easy (especially been a first time parents)..
Gives plenty of ears to your questions and responds wisely (so you don't panic for few situations).. Can't ask for anything more from a health care facility when you have been given good treatment and post surgery care..
Happy to be referred to FMC..

I have been using Flinders Medical Centre for a couple of problems that I m dealing with.
Under our health system, especially being unemployed for one of my conditions, I have to say the overall experience and service is exceptional.
Many people may complain but it is a public hospital and of course mostly busy.
I ve undergone three procedures, one being quite major and on each occasion have been pleasantly surprised at the results.
I give my thanks and gratitude to all the staff at Fliders Medical Centre, thank you.

I presented to ED after a major asthma attack thismorning around 3am.
While i understand covid 19 has staff strained and stressed out I don't think the doctors should be so easily brushing off things such as severe athsma, especially now. More than ever.
I was genuinely and still am concerned that I was so easily told to go home even after the doctor saying my chest is wheezing and crackling.
And the staff not wearing masks, dirty blankets and pillows over ED floor with only four patients in, myself included.

After 2 days of waiting it's become very clear this entire operation is filled with Incompetency and inability to do even the most basic follow-up or even initial search into patient records or history. Been left to gather all that information ourselves and something as simple as making a call between departments appears beyond them. Asked the same questions over and over with no one taking any note, hell to begin with they couldn't even manage to work out which patient was which.
I would rather die on the street than be brought to this place.

I had surgery at Flinders public hospital just over 2 weeks ago and stayed in for 2 nights, the nurses made me feel like I was their only patient. The care was first class. The only thing I have a complaint about was the food, it was bland and didnt look very appetizing at all. Being in hospital I dont expect restaurant quality or even home cooked quality, but I do expect edible food with a little flavour.
A big thank you to all the nurses who looked after me.

Friend was in the wait room with acute appendicitis. He was sitting there for about 5 or 6 hours before taken into an ED room, where he waited for another 3 or so hours before being taken into a makeshift room in a medical closet, where he waited overnight before he was told he'd need to wait until morning before anything could happen.
