Flâneur Wines: Crafting Site-Specific and Vintage-Driven Oregon Wines
Flâneur Winery is a boutique winery located in the heart of Oregon's wine country. The winery crafts site-specific and vintage-driven wines from their estate vineyards in the Ribbon Ridge and Chehalem Mountain AVAs. With a focus on sustainable farming practices, Flâneur Winery produces some of the finest wines in the region.
The History of Flâneur Winery
Flâneur Winery was founded by Marty Doerschlag, who has been involved in the wine industry for over 20 years. Marty's passion for wine began when he was studying abroad in France during college. He fell in love with French wines and decided to pursue a career in the wine industry.
After working for several wineries throughout California, Marty moved to Oregon to start his own winery. He purchased an old hazelnut orchard on Ribbon Ridge and began planting vines. Today, Flâneur Winery has two estate vineyards: La Belle Promenade Vineyard on Ribbon Ridge and Whistling Ridge Vineyard on Chehalem Mountain.
Site-Specific Wines
At Flâneur Winery, they believe that great wines are made from great grapes grown in specific sites that express unique characteristics of terroir. That's why they focus on crafting site-specific wines that showcase the distinct flavors of their estate vineyards.
La Belle Promenade Vineyard is located at an elevation of 500 feet above sea level on Ribbon Ridge, which is known for its marine sedimentary soils with high levels of iron oxide. The soil composition gives La Belle Promenade grapes a distinctive minerality that is reflected in their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines.
Whistling Ridge Vineyard sits at an elevation between 600-800 feet above sea level on Chehalem Mountain. The vineyard is planted on volcanic soils with a high percentage of basalt, which gives the grapes a unique earthiness and spice that is reflected in their Pinot Noir and Syrah wines.
Vintage-Driven Wines
Flâneur Winery also believes that great wines are made from great vintages. That's why they focus on crafting vintage-driven wines that reflect the unique characteristics of each growing season.
In Oregon, the weather can be unpredictable, with cool and wet springs followed by hot and dry summers. This variability makes each vintage unique, with its own set of challenges and opportunities. Flâneur Winery embraces this variability by crafting wines that reflect the distinct flavors of each vintage.
Sustainable Farming Practices
At Flâneur Winery, they believe in sustainable farming practices that promote healthy soil, clean water, and biodiversity. They use cover crops to improve soil health and reduce erosion, as well as compost to add organic matter to the soil.
They also use integrated pest management techniques to control pests without relying on harmful chemicals. By promoting biodiversity through planting native plants around their vineyards, they create habitats for beneficial insects like bees and butterflies.
Conclusion
