This library is a treasure trove of artistic knowledge and resources that cater to students, faculty members, researchers, and art enthusiasts alike. With its vast collection of books, journals, manuscripts, photographs, and other materials related to fine arts and architecture from around the world, this library is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in exploring the world of art.
The Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library was established in 1929 as part of the University's School of Architecture. It was named after Fiske Kimball (1888-1955), an American architect who served as the director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art from 1925 to 1942. He was also a professor at UVA's School of Architecture from 1919 until his death in 1955.
Today, this library has grown into one of the most comprehensive fine arts libraries in Virginia with over 200 thousand volumes covering all aspects related to fine arts including painting, sculpture, photography, architecture design theory and history among others. The library also houses rare books such as first editions by famous artists like Leonardo da Vinci or Michelangelo Buonarroti.
The Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library offers access to various online databases such as JSTOR or ARTstor which provide access to thousands upon thousands more articles on art history than what can be found within its walls alone. These databases are available for use by students and faculty members alike who need access outside regular hours or when they are off-campus.
In addition to its extensive collection and online resources available through subscriptions like JSTOR or ARTstor mentioned above; The Fiske Kimball Fine Arts Library also hosts numerous events throughout each academic year including lectures by visiting scholars on topics ranging from contemporary art trends around Europe today all way back through ancient Greece & Rome up until modern times!
