Imagine a place where subatomic particles are being shot at the speed of light under your feet. Imagine where you can simply walk into a national center of excellence and immerse yourself with international scientists who are simply trying to understand how the world works. Imagine taking a walk around acres of preserved forest on trails where Bison are protected animals and being toured with pride by a local scientist explaining to you how our understanding of particle physics will change our lives yet again. Imagine where you can do all of the above anytime of the day and anytime of the year and know that the doors of science are always open to the curious human mind young or old.
You would be in Fermilab.

Wonderful facility. Cafeteria is open to the public. Lederman Science Center is a clean & free place for kids to learn science with hands-on experiments. Nature trails are excellent for running/strolling. Highly highly recommend for parents.

Was informed about entrance sign saying "registration closed". Phoned. "Rick" refused to answer any questions, including his name until the 3rd request. Must be the janitor. No wonder Fermi is #2!

I love working here as a graduate student! We have such interesting guests! Such as 2006 Nobel Prize in Physics winner, John Mather. (There have been many other novel prize guests but this was the one I got to meet personally!)

I love Fermi Lab since our home school days. We came on a rainy Sunday because sister wanted to check out the bison. We did not find them but we found out FL has ASK A SCIENTIST every 1st Sunday of the month which is a free lecture plus a tour upstairs. We would have gone if we had the time.

The best place my first home in US. The place is quite lonely but there are lots of things to explore. You need an ID badge to get entry inside the campus. There are many lakes inside the campus with beautiful walking trails along the lake shores. There are plenty of deer's which can be spotted occasionally. Yeah one annoying thing about the campus is lots of geese which doesn't help to maintain the cleanliness of the campus. Overall I rate this place a good one to explore and enjoy.

This place is amazing! Lots to do and very educational. There is a lot of ponds to fish in and lots of area to walk. The property is well kept and is very scenic. The main building offers lots of educational opportunities and the top floors provide a beautiful view!
I believe you can get yours by calling to arrange this but I'm not entirely sure. I would love to go on one! I have been visiting this place for my whole life...back many years ago my grandparents owned a lot on the property...not sure how that works as for now the place is privately owned

Very very interesting. The second most powerful particle accelerator in the world after CERN. Everything is very well visible and explained from the Wilson Hall -15 floor. The only flaw is that you may feel stupid and mediocre especially among so many scientists :) One of the best attractions in Illinois. Everyone must see

Premier particle physics national laboratory name...

Premier particle physics national laboratory named after renowned physicist Enrico Fermi. The laboratory is famous for hosting experiments that discovered bottom and top quarks. It is accessible to general public requiring driver license to enter by vehicle, or no document at all if entering by foot or bicycle. Fermilab offers public tours, colloquia and art series nights.
There are several educational programs for youth in Lederman scientific center, one of them being Saturday Morning Physics. Additionally there is a dog run and one can enjoy biking or jogging. There is bike/pedestrian path along the main road. The main building , Wilson Hall, has cafeteria offering decent food. There is Frontier Pub in the village. And of course a herd of American buffaloes, which has become a symbol of the laboratory.

Very pleasant visit. The Wilson Hall 15 floor is open for the public even without guided tour. Everything is explained and displayed very simple and understandable. Especially for "genius" people like us :D .The bisons were very close to the fence and you can see them all. And if you want to see smart scientists this place is full of them :).

A Huge National Particle Research Laboratory named after Great Physicist Enrico Fermi which is approximately 28 Miles distance away from Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago, Illinois. During Tour from Argonne National Laboratory, Opportunity received to Nuclear Scientists/Engineers from the Whole World to visit this Interesting Beautiful Laboratory. International Atomic Energy Agency organizes Training Programmes for Nuclear Engineers/Scientists and in One of these Programmes, Scientists from the World gathered at Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago, Illinois. My Father Sardar Baldev Singh Gill was one of them who visited Fermilab at that Time.

Despite being the only National DOE laboratory that is open to the public, Fermilab is also one of the most beautiful. Not only does Fermilab have world class physics research going on there, they also have; Illinois prairie and savanna restoration, bike and jogging paths, fishing lakes, and even a huge field to run your dog. Oh, yeah, there is also some really cool science stuff that you can tour.

Super cool place. Free tours and they treat it like an open campus you can visit. There are many artistic things to see and Buffalo on a farm. Many beautiful views from the 15th floor where you can do a self guided tour for free. There are also areas to fish and walk your dogs.

I was here for the Sunday lecture series. I highly recommend the it. After the hour or so lecture there is a tour of one of the facilities and a small reception on the top floor of the main building which has a great view of the western suburbs. I'm glad that the make the lab accessible to the public through this event and many others.

Fascinating lectures were held here when I lived in IL. I went several times during the time period of 2010-2015. I would go to the Storm Weather Seminars with Tom Skilling here. Place was always clean and gorgeous. Was always exciting to learn more about the world and the science behind it all!
