Sand Dams Worldwide supports some of the world’s poorest people by helping them to transform their own lives through water and soil conservation in drylands. We work with local partners to support rural communities to build sand dams, which provide clean water for life and the opportunity to develop their livelihoods. Excellent Development: Empowering Communities through Sustainable Water Solutions
Excellent Development is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to empowering communities in some of the world's poorest regions by providing them with sustainable water solutions. The organization works with local partners to support rural communities in building sand dams, which provide clean water for life and the opportunity to develop their livelihoods.
Sand Dams Worldwide was founded on the belief that access to clean water is a fundamental human right, and that it can be achieved through sustainable solutions. The organization recognizes that many of the world's poorest people live in drylands, where access to water is limited and unreliable. Sand dams are an innovative solution that can help transform these communities by providing them with a reliable source of clean water.
A sand dam is essentially a concrete wall built across a seasonal riverbed or stream. When it rains, the dam captures and stores rainwater behind it, creating an underground reservoir of clean water. This stored water can then be accessed throughout the year for drinking, irrigation, and other uses.
The benefits of sand dams go beyond just providing access to clean water. They also help improve soil quality by trapping sediment behind the dam, which can then be used as fertilizer for crops. This leads to increased agricultural productivity and improved food security for local communities.
Sand dams are also cost-effective compared to other forms of infrastructure such as boreholes or wells. They require minimal maintenance once they are built and have a lifespan of up to 50 years.
Excellent Development works closely with local partners in each community where they operate. This ensures that projects are tailored specifically to meet the needs of each community and are implemented in a culturally sensitive way.
The organization has already helped build over 100 sand dams across Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and Somalia - transforming thousands of lives along the way.
In addition to building sand dams themselves Excellent Development also provides training programs on sustainable agriculture practices such as agroforestry, soil conservation and water management. These programs help communities to develop their livelihoods and become more self-sufficient.
Excellent Development is committed to creating a world where everyone has access to clean water and the opportunity to thrive. By empowering communities through sustainable water solutions, they are helping millions of people transform their own lives.
