EMBERS, the Eastside Movement for Business & Economic Renewal Society, is a registered community economic development charity in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.
EMBERS, the Eastside Movement for Business & Economic Renewal Society, is a non-profit organization that has been working tirelessly to uplift the community of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. The society was founded in 2001 with a mission to create economic opportunities for people living in poverty and help them become self-sufficient.
The Downtown Eastside is one of Canada's poorest neighborhoods, with high rates of homelessness, addiction, and mental illness. EMBERS recognized that traditional approaches to poverty alleviation were not enough and decided to take a different approach. They believed that providing people with meaningful work opportunities could help break the cycle of poverty.
Over the years, EMBERS has developed several programs aimed at creating jobs and supporting small businesses. One such program is their temporary staffing agency called EMBERS Staffing Solutions. This program provides short-term employment opportunities for people who are struggling to find work due to various barriers such as criminal records or lack of experience.
EMBERS also runs an entrepreneurship program called EMBERS Ventures which helps aspiring entrepreneurs start their own businesses by providing training, mentorship, and access to capital. The program has helped launch over 300 small businesses since its inception.
