When my now wife (an Athens local) first insisted we use Downard Photography for our wedding I was a little skeptical, not knowing anything about him, and I wanted to compare other options. I mean sure, everyone who worked with Jim had the exact same response that he was, "very nice," but how was I to know what that even meant? My wife would have none of my doubts though, and we signed the contract to have him do our wedding photos.
My reservations were instantly put at ease when Jim offered to call me during non-business hours just to get to know me as a client. He said that knowing a little bit about me would help him do a better job in capturing our wedding moments. We talked for an hour and a half about various topics and got to know each other pretty well. He was definitely right.
Maybe like some other men out there, I'm not really a big fan of getting my picture taken. Getting to know Jim ahead of time instantly put me at ease in front of the camera though, and his polite, friendly and entrepreneurial attitude made things go even easier. Jim's intense attention to detail and passion for his work also showed through and people took notice.
A few fast facts: My groomsmen (who share being camera-shy) said the whole experience was a lot easier than they thought it would be. Members of my family kept coming up to us during and after the wedding to remark how much they liked the photographer. Out of everyone we worked with bringing our wedding together, Jim was the best.
I'm happy to write this post now admitting publicly I was wrong. The two major lessons here are 1) your wife is always right and 2) always choose Downard Photography in Athens, Ohio!

Downard Photography is a favorite among Athens Area residents. Jim works with you to get photos that you love, and that represent you. As an example, for my college graduation pics I wore a purple shirt and he provided me with a golden yellow background at my request. To most people those colors don't go together, but it represented my sense of style and we ran with that. I appreciate that the photo creations are a mix of the client and Jim's vision. I've had photos taken at other companies where I basically had zero input, and I felt like the photos didn't really represent me. Since those experiences, I've decided to always stick with Downard Photography. With Jim's work, the pictures really spoke to me as both personalized and professional. At Downard Photography, it is a unique and fun experience to come up with backgrounds and scenes that you love. And if something isn't working for you, Jim is happy to fix it. I really enjoyed the experience of working with Jim Downard! I needed to get a portrait done for work and he spent so much time with me making sure the pictures were exactly what I wanted! Downard Photography is the best! After taking my son there for senior pictures in 2012, I decided to take my daughter this year for her senior pictures. They did another amazing job!
