After spending 7 years recording music on a rinky dink USB mic and mixing by literally pasting my vocals over YouTube rips in Audacity, I realized I wasn t going to get any closer to my dreams if I didn t start investing in my music.
A professional studio seemed like a scary step to take though. Skilled, experienced engineers with pro-level equipment, listening closely as I put my most vulnerable verses to music? No way. I was afraid of strangers and judgment and that my investment would be mocked.
But as soon as I toured DLM, weeks before I even recorded, I knew it was a place that my concerns would be put at ease. I knew it was a place to grow. Right off the bat, the staff was super friendly and quick with email responses (a good sign!). The space itself has an extremely chill vibe, dope murals in the stairwell, and an insane set of equipment that makes the mixing board look like a spaceship s control room. There s a separate room for bands and a slick vocal booth on the other side. They ve got an SM7B so you know they ain t playin but there s also a whole rack of other mics if you re looking for a different sound.
There s a stereotype on online music forums that audio engineers are grumpy dorito-encrusted gremlins but DLM s engineer Justin couldn t be further from that. Super chill, clearly skilled. Good ear. Polite and thoughtful with feedback and most importantly, patient. This guy knows what he s doing, and how he can push your music to reach another level.
In the space of a few sessions at DLM, I ve been able to create some of the best tracks of my whole career. After constant dissatisfaction with my USB recordings, lemme just say it is an amazing feeling to be proud of what you re creating. If you re in the area and you re ready to make a worthwhile investment in yourself so that you can grow as an artist, look no further. This is it, chief- at a very fair price.
