Dekalb County Sherrif Office Review

They treated us like Dogs, half of the inmates were in there bc of petty stop and frisk and other petty crimes .. They left us in there from the time we woke up til 1 o'clock without water , or cups to even drink out the fossit. The guards will go get Food and eat it dead in your face , while we only got 2 meals. Breakfast is at 4am. And lunch is at 1 and after 1 you don't eat anymore. That's why young people get out of jail looking sick and infested... Smh, I just wish all the inmates luck and God bless them

Hopefully with Thomas Brown or Tom Brown (the informal version of his name he came up with to try to come off as down to earth and 'one of the people' as he attempted and failed to obtain the 4th District Congressional Seat) out of the picture, this jail will be run up to standard. For years Brown has abused his power and used his position as an outpost for networking. He did not give a damn about the safety of inmates, or their health. During a brief stay in 2011 there were several scabies outbreaks, but of course none of this was reported. The inmates are not allowed to write letters anymore, they must send and receive small postcards, and they are fed two times a day (the first time being at 5:00 in the morning where you receive your breakfast tray and a sandwich for lunch, and the second time at noon where you receive your dinner). The staff are highly unprofessional, especially the fake swat guys they call the "JEST" Team. In the intake section, the holding pods get overcrowded extremely fast. One guy in the holding pod was standing beside the door, because there was nowhere else in the tank to stand and there was hardly any air, and one of the JEST team members told him to 'get away from the door'. The guy stepped as far to the side as he could, but this wasn't good enough. The JEST officer had the door opened, and brought the guy out of the tank where three of them assaulted him with "restraint tactics". They placed the guy in a headlock and wrestled him to the floor, beat him with a nightstick, and then cuffed his hands behind his back, and lifted him in the air by the cuffs, and marched him around the pod for everyone to see while he screamed and begged for mercy in a 'ritual' the JEST team refers to as 'the three hour tour'. After 5 to 10 minutes they finally stopped. They un-cuffed the guy, and put him in an empty tank by himself and cut the phone off so that he couldn't call anyone. His wrists were extremely swollen. His crime was a traffic crime, driving without a license. All of this for standing by the door when there was no place to sit and hardly anywhere to move in a crowded pod. Of course none of this was on tape, and the jail makes sure that no one has a cell phone in the holding tanks with them for this very purpose. The feds should have taken this place over years ago when Uncle Tom Brown was still running it. The 8th Amendment does not exist here. Cruel and unusual punishment is the norm. My advice, don't put a toe out of line, don't J-Walk, make sure you check the DDS website to see if your license is suspended every single day before you leave the house. Avoid all confrontations. Don't give DeKalb Police any reason to arrest you if you can avoid it. Once you go in there, you're ass is theirs. Plan. Simple.

Very nasty facility and the staff are very unprofessional rud and nasty

This jail refuses to give medication to there inmates plus they only feed twice a day which isn't enough. I'm contacting the Aclu and southern center of human rights about the matter

The staff are horrible not everyone that goes to jail is a criminal . It's crazy because the workers treat the men good flirt with them and all . This place disgust me it should be shut down .

Someone needs to look into this place and shut this place down. They love locking people up for no reason and not giving family any information. And the meat they serve is green.

Never been got caught shoplifting did 27 days in orange county California but by the looks of it this place is more of a hell hole free my buddy Donnel feed them good while he's there

They ignore health concerns of some inmates when they arrive which is just unacceptable. Inmates on meds should get them and there is no excuse.

System is constantly down, no one will answer the phone, there is no room on the medical floor for people that are sick or have disabilities, there are flies, knats, and roaches and waterbugs crawling around the inmates cells/dorms where they sleep. This is no place for a human being to be incarcerated. The Feds need to step in and make a difference at the DeKalb County Sheriff-Jail in Decatur, Georgia.

I must say I agree with EVERY SINGLE comment on here. I think they are all pion's that used to get bullied and beat at school, didn't have any friends, and just basically didn't matter to anyone so they ALL had the bright idea to join the force. RETARDED when you sign up for a job to help the public that should be your main goal, NOT GET BACK cause guess what one day it WILL BE YOUR TURN. Police or no police. Murdering innocent black people by default while everybody else go free after driving their whole families into the nearby river what kind of justice is that. Innocent people sitting in prison for life while pedophiles live life and roam freely to turn our innocent youth into people who can't even look at themselves because of what someone has done to them. After spending 5 days there over a holiday weekend for a traffic offense, it was no fun. But, at least I had a decent view of the parking lot from my bunk. I wasn't mistreated and I'm thinking it's a whole hell of a lot better than a Turkish prison (see the movie Midnight Express and you'll see why),

I am looking at the other comments up here and a lot of them are negative but i have my own comments that i would like to make about my experience at Dekalb county jail, I spent 6 months at Dekalb county jail, 4 months i was in orange uniform before i became trustee as the red girl, i had a chance to work with iam going to say some wonderful officers they all treated me good i mean iam here in NewJersey i moved back here and i truly have to say that i miss them i think about them all the time they were so good to me and very helpful when i needed them they never had an attitude with me they spoke every morning to me i had a nice time being around the officers and the sergents came up they were nice to me and spoke to me very nice officers i was the red girl for 2 months and i got to say i miss them im in NewJersey now and i always talk about how much i miss them and how good they treated me and i just want to say they are the Best officers Dekalb County. Smile

Another day in Dekalb and another Dead on the Dekalbs streets.Top 3 worst police department in Atlanta. Just turn the news on any given day and you'll see dekalbs fineness at work.Everyday theres something in this county. Pay close attention to the news more times than not youll see them laughing and hanging out. Very un-professional and your safety is the least of there concern!

Their releasing process is horrendously slow. I paid bail 2 hours after the arrest and I went to the jail thinking I could pick up my friend. However, I was stuck waiting for 13 hours. They wouldn't tell me an estimate time nor help me by notifying me when they were completely released. I'm highly annoyed.

Are they really surprised about the jailhouse video??

Very unprofessional and many of the employees are rude. It's a jail Yes, but it makes no sense for them to treat the public like they are inmates.
They should really be investigated. Their jail is DISGUSTING to say the least...

I'm so freaking tired of being talked to like I'm a criminal!!!! Call down there for Anything & they speak to you like trash! Learn some respect people!! Then you have these recordings about care & concern for your loved one?! How further from the truth can you get?!!!! Treat people with respect.

I have two kids at this jail, and what I am thankful for, is that they have video visit. I'm all the way in another state and get to see them, and for that I'm thankful. Especially when I think of the cost of Hotel, Rental Car, Flights, etc. etc. etc...I give a mega shout out to the officers and staff that have to deal with some of the madness. Though some are not angels themselves, what I continue to pray is for peace and justice for all. God be with them all. HE is the only judge. One Love TO ALL!!!

Ummm... are jails supposed to be 5 star accommodations? I think I better just get down on my knees and be thankful Im not there and beg for the wisdom to keep me out of such.

I've never had to be incarcerated in the Dekalb County Jail, but just going to the Inmate Look-up Tool tells me everything I need to know about how efficiently the jail is operated...If I see that damn black crooked mouth dude one more time!! You can type in anyone's name and 9 times out of 10, you're gonna get a photo of crooked mouth with someone else's information...Get on it DeKalb, get on it!!

Only been there as a visitor. Don't take ANYTHING in with you except your ID and maybe a pen and paper. No belt or jewelry. Ladies, cover up. They will not let you in if you are showing too much skin. Parking next to it is a pay lot. Take MARTA or park in the MARTA parking lot and walk.

I am told that if you get locked up, ask for a vegetarian meal.

Inhumane. No running water, overcrowded holding cells, computer systems down for days so no-one could be processed out in a timely manner. Citizens being arrested and rounded up like cattle for minor offenses.
