My home gym. No complaints, I have worked out here all times of day and the facility is clean and it's not hard to get access to equipment, even when facility is busy the members are pretty willing to share.

I have been to East Lake and South DeKalb and Decatur is the best by far! Have been a member since 2013. It's always clean - love the renovation and lots of group exercise classes to choose from!
Horribly unfriendly staff. Expensive for what you get. They have a basketball court but they close it down most of the time for whatever event/class they feel like.
I really wanted to join this Y but registering here would take an act of God. I'm sure for those will to take on this guantlet it pays off. But I would recommend taking your money to a gym that wants you to be a member.
8/1/20 Changing to 4 stars. You must reserve a lane to swim an hour before and no earlier than 24 hours ahead. I called 15 minutes before the time slot after I saw a free lane and I was allowed to swim, so more flexible with rules. I was annoyed that I had to walk all the way around the pool to shower before swimming when no one was outside the pool aside from the life guard, but Covid-19 rule. The life guard was very careful about wiping down shower handles, so that was positive. Also, you can use the lockers now, which is helpful as I make multiple trips to the car forgetting things. Also, I don't have to change at work now. I think this location will be a 5 once things are back up and running.
The YMCA is not very crowded these days. There is a sign stating Glad You Are Sticking With Us. I booked a 6:15 pm appointment to swim. Approximately at 5:45 pm, I was called to say it was thundering, so I may not want to swim. I appreciated the call, but I mentioned that I could swim at 6:30 which is the time they had the thunder watch until. I was told to wait 5 more minutes after arrival, so I entered the pool around 6:35ish. At exactly 7pm, I was told that I had to exit the pool, although no one else was in the pool and only one person was waiting for the 7:15 spot. When I asked why I could not swim a bit more, I was told this is their rules. Other rules include must wear a mask, no bag or changing in the bathroom or showering or supplied towel. So, you are checking in with a YMCA card, keys, googles, flip flops, towel and cap in hand. You have to sign a covid release on a tablet each time despite having a temperature check. I believe they are afraid of a law suit, but should be more aware of patrons they may be losing.
We love the classes and my youngest son especially loves the play center. Everyone there is so caring and attentive. He went through a short phase when he was wary of being left but they worked with him to make him comfortable and now he looks forward to it every time!
I love the variety of classes the people. As well as the wellness staff . Joanna was so helpful to start me on my get healthy journey. I love the ymca .
Talk about 1 person ruining business! For this place is this man called Darvin P. He was very rude, disrespectful and unwelcoming person multiple times!. I even took it to management which I m waiting reply. Never have I been mistreated like this from any ymca staff or any other gym. Be careful of him! I m reporting so that he doesn t do that to any member. I never had any other problem with any other staff except him. I have been going there only for few days now.
The Decatur-DeKalb Y has so much to offer in the way of group exercise...I exercise at the Y 6/7 days per week nearly all of the time. I love my spin classes, my turbo kick classes, and my fierce funk. I really like that the machines are available and rarely is there a wait. The Y is clean and there's always towels. The staff are also really friendly. I am lucky to be so near this facility!
I especially love the exercise classes. Most of the instructors I've had are outstanding - In addition to leading challenging exercise routines, they remember names, convey a sense of fun, etc. The same is true of the woman who helped me get started on a weight routine. Jan still encourages me every time I see her. Most of all, I experience a strong sense of community at the Decatur YMCA. I recently participated in a volunteered during the 160 anniversary event and enjoyed meeting other volunteers. Even the folks at the front desk are wonderful - they always remember my name. Now, that's really something
This is a fantastic community and I love going to my Y. I take spin class and sometimes swim. I look forward to my kids being old enough to use the weight room and start to take classes too.
A comfortable, safe place for all walks of life. Old, young, thick, thin... They have towels and sanitation is key. They provide wipes for machine use. Fancy workout outfits are not necessary. All fitness levels are welcome.
Love this ymca! The child care center is outstanding! Miss Mary helped us so much when our son had issues with us dropping him off (this was his first time being put in any kind of child care). She and the rest of the staff were so patient, understanding, and helpful when he needed a little extra help getting used to the childcare center. Now he is two years old and loves going to the YMCA to play while we work out. They were also so understanding when he began acting out (some behavior issues due to getting used to our new baby). They kindly told us about the issues and asked how we wanted them to correct him and still made us feel comfortable and welcome to continue bringing him to the child care center. They truly understand child development and genuinely want to help kids learn and grow to their best potential!
My trainer Lisa is the greatest. She meets me wherever I am in our program. If I need to progress she has a plan. If I can not even remember what to do next she just instructs me step by step. She never seems frustrated not even when she needs to repeat instructions many times.
I've recently started going to Decatur YMCA about a month and half ago, and I can say by far it's the best "Y" I've been to so far. I was going to South Dekalb "Y" but I've switched. Nobody bothers you while you are working out at Decatur "Y". South Dekalb "Y" sucks! It's old, out-dated, and the personnel sucks! Decatur Family "Y" rocks!
Great place to workout on your own, but the kids programs are awful. We started with "ballet" for our three year old here and two bratty little girls ran circles around the teacher. She spent most of her time scolding them and warning them, not teaching anything. We tried the "horse camp" one summer that promised to give the kids lots of time in the saddle. The kids got 45 minutes. The rest of the time was spent sitting in the shade, watching counselors flirt and text. Later we tried gymnastics which was a good first start but once it came to joining the team, we realized the Y's aspirations are way beyond its means. The equipment has to be set up and taken down every session. They do it quickly and without really checking to make sure everything is right. In the year we were there, three girls broke bones during practices. The coaches are bored teenagers who spend most of their time staring at their phones or sitting on the floor rather that doing any actual coaching. I was embarrassed for the team at meets because other coaches were enthusiastically cheering on their teams, the Y coaches just sat there, barely acknowledging that one of their girls had just performed. The other teams sparkled and shined for the judges, the Y team didn't know how to smile or salute because their coaches didn't teach them. The final straw for our gymnastics experience was when one of the "coaches" cornered my daughter at a practice and pinned her against a wall asking, "Why don't you like me?" Maybe she doesn't like you because you're a threatening ass, just a thought. That ended our experiment with the Y's children's programs. I realize that most of their "coaches" are volunteers, but there has to be more training and oversight for them. The Y's programs might be a good way for your kids to try a sport, but once they show talent or real interest in an activity, if you can afford it, move them to a better facility with caring, thoughtful coaches.
I just want to say Chartez the new Deck Manager is really a god sent person because he's very attentive to the swimmers. He encourages them to face adversity and he's the epitome of a Aquatic Professional. He has the remarkable ability to increase customer service and as I watch him with the staff he alway seem to boost there energy he pushes them to more professional growth I honestly think that he needs a Promotion. I more comfortable coming to swim now because I feel that he is very responsible. Chartez is an impressive manager who is always accountable for the Pool and staff. His knowledge of Swimming and expertise in Aquatic Management is a huge advantage to the entire Community at Decatur YMCA . This guy is truly amazing ! He need to be a director.
Love the babysitting center and we have done the swim lessons and love them. I like that the membership and programs are reasonably priced so that everyone can participate.
My 8 year old daughter participated in the Decatur Family YMCA summer camp program this past summer. She was enrolled in both "Jr. Sports & Dream and Discover" camps.
In Jr. Sports Camp she learned to play a number of games, went to her first Atlanta Braves game, learned to tennis from Tennis pro and made plenty of girlfriends. At Dream and Discover camp she kept some old friends and made even more. She completed science projects, read books, played even more games and was tickled by the whole event. She can't wait to go back next year and I can't wait to enroll her.
The staff were exceptionally helpful and professional. All enrollments are completed online. When I needed to change one of her camps I was informed that a slot was available her enrollment was transferred and she began to Dream and Discover. The check-in and checkout process is completed with sign in and sign out sheets and id is required. With my daughter being so important to me I was reassured every time I completed the drop off or pick up process.
Front desk employees tend to have bad attitudes. One employee told me if I wanted to get a lock I left up there I would need to come back to Decatur and pick it up before the Y closed.
Nice facility. The weights room area is a little small, but it s way more nicer and cleaner than the East lake YMCA. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience when I visited this particular location. One of the white female trainers ( petite older white lady with long red hair) gave off racist, kkk vibes to me.
I noticed she kept staring in my direction and giving me dirty looks. Every time I looked up, her eyes were glued onto me, and she had an angered look on her face like she was upset at the fact I was there.
Somehow she ended up making her way towards me. I noticed her movements were close and quick. Like she was attempting to intimidate me with her body language.
Needless to say, she made me feel extremely uncomfortable and unwelcomed. Someone should have a talking with her before she does this to another person of color. It 2019, nobody should be singled out or feel unwelcomed because of the color of their skin. Smh! I swear Trump is emboldening the racist! They can t hide who they are or pretend civility even at their place of employment!
I called and asked for their swimming class rate sheet, was put on hold for a while, then someone else picked up the phone and asked what my call regarded. I explained again, he asked another staff member, then stated that he did not have a rate sbeet die to limited staffing. I asked if he could direct me to the rates on the website or whether I could just come in and obtain the information and he rudeI y statded "No I can't help you." I asked for his name explaining that he was very rude and that I was going to report him and then he slammed the phone in my face. Terrible.
It's is a very good place to go to get some exercise in. It's not crowded place at all. Everything is spreader out in different rooms. An they keep it very clean and sanitized. I've been going going there before and after the covid hit.
The coaching staff makes this place a winner. I love the results I've seen, and the renovation raises the bar to new levels. I am comfortable with the crowd there ... everyone, staff and members alike, are helpful, cooperative, and supportive. The feel of the place is terrific, and the new equipment is fantastic. The classes are amazing.
I would give no stars if I could. Never again. Customer service rep laughing in my face as I was inquiring about a registration fee refund for the afterschool care program that the YMCA DECIDED TO NO LONGER PROVIDE FOR MY SON after 3 days as he was the only child they had to pick up from his school. And it took several weeks to be correctly refunded the 3 weeks of tuition I had paid in advance. Not going to get my business anymore that's for sure.
This was our daughter's first year at the YMCA summer camp, and she loved it. I could tell that she was engaged and stayed active. The staff were caring and attentive. My daughter also made several new friends that we have kept in touch with even though camp has ended. The photos taken each week by the staff are a great bonus, as well as the special Friday activities. We will definitely be back next year.
Pretty nice facility. Cybex and cardio machines are pretty well maintained. There are a few members who can be rude (recently had a man harass me when i took my phone out for 30 seconds in between reps on a machine. I would ve moved if he d just asked. Not the first time something like this has happened). Wellness staff is pretty helpful, but many of the receptionists are very rude and act inconvenienced when they have to do their job. Recently there are two staff members in particular who haven t said a word to me when I said hello and told them my last name; they do not respond when I say thank you or have a nice day . I wish I d had a better experience every time I walk out the door, but it s generally a fine place to work out.
Nice new facility and good mix of equipment. Family-friendly. Heated indoor pool, hot tub and steam room. I like the classes a lot, but they could offer a few more hard core classes.
This place is clean, welcoming and has a wonderful variety of classes. For the most part the instructors are excellent! I am just returning to exercise at the Y after a 5 year hiatus! There are plenty of ways I can get my exercise in with classes that are meant for people with my level of fitness! I really enjoy my time at the Y!
Our child was in the summer camp that was over at the International Community School for 3 weeks. During this time, the experience slowly degraded. Items were lost such as towels, lunch box, and swim trunks. WE discussed with the staff about the accountability there and it seems very unorganized. We also got reports of behavior issues, but the counselors gave different stories and details became questionable. We removed him from this highly unorganized camp and placed him in a more suitable one.
I loved going to the Y and had once been a member here. When I walked in to reconsider joining, I checked their dressing room and saw that they no longer had gender separate jacuzzi and steam room. It's all co-ed! This is rather discouraging because I'm modest and don't want to mingle with topless men in skimpy doo. Also only 2 rowing machines!? Man... I'm checking out the other Y and see what they have.
My daughter and I just love this place. The workout facility is great and the people are just so friendly. There are always activities for all ages, a true asset to our Family.
Its been an ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE booking swimming lanes at this location. An absolute nightmare. You can't ever book a lane. However, when you get there to workout all the lanes are EMPTY. Make it make sense.
I workout at the Decatur ymca 4 or five times a week. It's always a pleasant and peaceful atmosphere, especially after having a long day at work. It is very convenient to my job, which is a plus. The Staff members are always very pleasant and helpful. You never get bored there is a wide variety of activities, equipment, (there is also pool, whirlpool and steam room ) to meet the needs of everyone from beginners to the advanced. This place is always neat clean. I always safe here. Thanks Decatur YMCA FOR providing excellent services and programs!
I love the Decatur Y because it is so comfortable and friendly. It has a diverse (in every way - gender, age, race, and physical ability) clientele. Full array of free classes. Great pricing for seniors.
The trainers of this gym are very friendly and wonderful people to work with. I've never been to a gym with great people like this. They are really astonishing. Thank you guys!.
I love the "Fierce Funk" dance classes, the big, clean cardio machine area, and the kind, friendly folks who greet me every time I come in!I love our Y!
Good friendly staff but poor top management. They will close the Y early for any excuse. I have been a Y fan for many years in Louisville KY and I would rate this Y in Decatur a C- maybe a D overall.
its on ok fitness center but a terrible gym. They are renovating it so they have NO FREE WEIGHTS!! They want a bunch of old people and little kids. They do have a great pool, but its always packed for lane swimmin
