One of the O.G. Craft cocktails bars in the city. Expect a wait. There s a text message system which is nice. The drinks aren t cheap but they are delicious and complex. Honestly given that cocktails pretty much everywhere here are a bajillion dollars at least these ones are worth it.

I prefer Amor y Amargo next door, to be honest. They were playing really discordant sounding music that night I was there.
The server was helpful, though. The price for the drinks and the ambience didn t add up. I think most would want the atmosphere to be more than just bearable. There was also a couple who were clearly too intoxicated to be in there, getting messy by the corner of the bar. :/ I know it s dark but.... meh. Idk what other excuses to say.

Excellent cocktails. The best I've had infact. Bar staff were pleasant, knowledgable and helpful. They were 'there but not there' which i felt really worked for this kind of place. I'll 100% go again. Excellent.

This place is expensive but worth it. Its close to a lot of stuff in Manhattan and the bartenders and servers definitely know their stuff.
Every time I go I order a Vesper Martini just to see if they can make it (its not listed on the menu) and I'm never disappointed.
The bouncer outside controls the number of people getting in so its never crowded and everyone inside has a seat. The intimacy of the place is preserved (unlike Back Room) and everyone has a great time.

Possibly my favorite of all the hot New York mixology spots. The drinks here are certainly killer and, best of all, the food (or "bites" as they are called) is fantastic. Not the most filling on their own, but a nice little variety will cover your appetite for a full dinner. The wait can get a bit gruesome, but the doorman will call your cell once you may enter, which is a somewhat nice feature, especially if you want to enjoy a drink or appetizer elsewhere in the area.

One of the coolest bars I've been to in NY & some amazing cocktails. Love the discreet door/sign and that they have no standing room & seat everyone. You can actually talk and enjoy your night with your group. Of course be prepared for a wait (put your name in and then head to another bar down the block) and some expensive drinks.

Amazing food and drinks. It s really cozy place. Is particularly dark, but that s part of the attraction. Is really nice to go with friends! 100% recommended

We had 22 parties ahead of us but the wait was not bad at all considering the bars to hop between in the general area. The guys behind the bar were masterful, to say the least. Great atmosphere and even better drinks; will definitely be going back!

Came around 10:30pm on a Wednesday. Waited 10min to be seated. $17-$20 cocktails, they were good, but it's a steep price point. Also got a soft pretzel that was good but way over priced. Ambiance is very nice though! Music is the right loudless so that you can still have a comfortable conversation with the person you came with, and the bartenders are super nice! Dark and candlit also.

I came here for drinks with my friend. The bouncer let us in right away probably because we're girls. We got a prime seat at the bar and ordered some cocktails. The menu was pretty extensive for drinks but not much for food so we decided not to eat there. We ordered some gin and rum cocktails, shaken not stirred. I enjoyed the Easy Breezy and the Paper Tiger the most. The flavors were interesting. I would return since this place doesn't seem that hard to get into unlike other speakeasies in NYC.

The guy on the front door didn t let us even enter the bar. He wanted to put us on a waiting list when we just wanted to see how the atmosphere in the bar was, and then decide whether we should go for it.

A great date spot and really nice speakeasy. It's really hard to find a spot, so make sure to make reservations. Additionally, if you're a huge party, make sure to break it up. I really enjoy their cocktails and the menu gives enough details as to what to expect.

Nicest bouncer EVER! Got the paper tiger which was perfectly savory after having a oversweetened mess of a punch at Cienfuegos. Also it's such an intimate atmosphere!

We stopped by here on a Saturday evening after a very early dinner. We did not have a reservation but, given the hour and that babysitters would constrain us to one round, we thought we could get a table. We got major attitude from the door person and, while waiting to see if they could accommodate us, he would not let a member of our party use the bathroom. We did get a table after a short wait in the cold--lucky us. We were brought four waters and, thankfully, noticed before drinking from it, that one of the glasses had a significant crack. After pointing this out, the waitperson took away the glass but never replaced it. We ordered four drinks, all very different from each other, but they all tasted pretty much the same. And we know our cocktails. I have no problem paying lots of money for good cocktails and service (and even putting up with attitude where it is earned), but we left very disappointed and will not return. This bar doesn't deserve a place among the great cocktail institutions of NYC (Employees Only, Milk & Honey, etc.). I'm surprised that anyone think it would.

Death and Company is one of New York's most stunning cocktail bars, writing a review of Death and Company is kind of like writing a review of a magnificent oak tree. Rooted in the classics, changing with the seasons, and breathing life into its surroundings, Death and Company has reached incredible notoriety. After seeing one of their recipes on a cocktail blog, I promptly bought their book, a rich tome of practical knowledge and creative recipes that should be in every bartender's cannon. The mystery and design surrounding the bar as you enter reflects the goth design within. We ordered a few seasonal drinks flavors of pork and douglas fir followed by a classic, creamy eggnog. It is a pleasant atmosphere that makes you feel at home. And do yourself a favor and sit at the bar, that's where the real action is, watching masters at work.

Proceed at your own risk because once you head over to death and co, you will be back! I am not a huge cocktail drinker (read: my tastes are limited) but death really does a wonderful job of allowing you to step out of your comfort zone while still feeling safe. I ve had some truly wonderful, unique cocktails the times I ve visited. Truly worth the hype!

Party of 3 waited 45 minutes in December to get in, understandable if the place was packed. However there was 6 tables and 4 bar seats available. Honestly.... Food/snacks were great, waitstaff seemed a bit entitled, drinks were ok.

We came early, and we are glad we did. Definitely the most interesting ambiance in NYC, and the bartender staff is one of the most consistently excellent that I have ever encountered. They quickly and expertly mixed our cocktails off the unique menu, each with more than seven or so ingredients, and kept the service succinct and whip-sharp, letting the eclectic aura and atmosphere do most of the job charming us. We will definitely return, and we will come early next time, as well.

Use to be my favorite cocktail speakeasy style bar. I absolutely love this place, from the dark decor to the awesome staff. Drinking is serious here and it's become a bit rowdy from the secret it use to be to the now financial type who come here too much but regardless of the crowd that sucks the drinks are impeccable. Good luck to you if they have a long wait and you know no one as you may never be let in but this place is worth every cent. The drinks really are superb and anyone I've brought here loves it.

Great speakeasy bar. Friendly staff. Good drinks. It took a little long to get our snacks, but this was fully compensated by them being on the house. They don't take reservations so be prepared to go on the wait list and come back when the person at the door texts you.

Arrogant pretentious girl at the door. Group of us from Ireland came to the Dead Rabbit and tried to try other so called best bars in NY . Dead Rabbit welcomes you, this bar makes you feel like you are intruding. Go to bar a few doors down, at least they are welcoming. Everything that s wrong with pretentious bars is summed up by this place and the ridiculous bouncerette. We would never treat tourists like this in Ireland.

There was a short line just after 6pm on Saturday but we nabbed a small table. Staff here is knowledgeable and helpful. Drinks and food arrived quickly. Pablo Honey was perfectly balanced - not too sweet and the Comadre with mole was superb. So dark it feels like you are surrounded by a curtain, which helps with the packed tables. Everyone is just happy to be here.

We got there early and put our name in... But then I very politely asked to use the restroom (having come a long way and it truly being urgent) and the door man just... Cancelled our reservation and turned his back. I don't know what kind of day he was having but...wow. Had to find somewhere else very quickly.

I went here for the first time and had the winslet - a solid gin cocktail. The dimly lit atmosphere is very intimate and makes for a good place to go to concentrate on what matters: drinking. Don't expect a warm reception at the door and wait there even if nobody is out there to be seated.

The bar is very dark. This should contribute to the mood, but has two problems: you can not read the drinks menu and there is a door policy, after which you have to wait outside until you are seated so that the door is not opened so often. Thus, the reception of our group was rather frosty, because we had dared to open the door. At 7 you can still sit at a table. We were 8 and we squeezed right. The homepage of the Death & Co. states however up to 8. If you're slim and you're nice, that's just how it works. The cocktails are very expensive. I could not understand the layout of the map. It is common to separate after alcohol, so here are the cocktails with rum, here with the gin, then with vodka, etc. It has therefore taken a long time to read through. Also thanks to the lack of light. The cocktails are very strong. Mine tasted good. But he was a bit more expensive. In other bars of the city, it was no different.

Adorable cocktail bar. Limited seating, and no standing, so expect to wait for a table. Nice people at the door to keep you entertained. Very unusual cocktails - these are strong, expensive drinks. They just released a cocktail cookbook - you are in expert hands here :)

Service and Drinks are great, but they should think about investing in another light-bulb or two for the place. pitch black, and even after adjusting it's way too dark to make out any significant colors.

We've been here twice.. The cocktails are amazing as expected. The doorman outside is very friendly and attentive but the service inside was disappointing both times. The bartender was rude, said maybe two words to us and smirked at our drink orders..The one in Denver is so much better!

My group of 4 put our name on the list around 8:30pm with the bouncer/host standing outside at the door. We waited for 3 hours to get a table! (Took a star off for the 3 hr wait) I kind of wish they had reservations but they do text you when your table is ready and gives you a 10-15 min window to get there. That way you don't just waste your time waiting. The drinks were really good. We really enjoyed our time there and would definitely go back.

I took two of my colleagues here for drinks after the wait at PDT was unreasonable. We were much happier with this place.Fantastic server who had some great suggestions, excellent drinks and presentation. I had a false summit and it was just perfect for the evening. Second time here and highly recommend it.

The drinks were good and the menu is interesting, but there are so many speakeasies and cool cocktail bars in NY that with the hipper-than-thou service, I'd recommend going elsewhere. Try Amor y Amargo or Attaboy instead.

Went downtown on the weekend wasn't really feeling the bar I was at so I decided to see what else the gas lamp had to offer and came across the bouncer Elijah who was really friendly standing in front of a door that said law office and as he flipped a switch and open the door my trip back in time to the prohibition era begun so as I walked down the dark staircase stood another bouncer Moises that welcome me and made sure I saw the last steps as he flash them with his light so I didn't miss a step the bar was packed and live music playing I made my way to the bar witch made some of the best drink's I ever had although a bit pricey they are wroth every penny the staff there are the best but the bouncer is the thing that really stood out to me and made me feel safe from the start to the end when they had last call for drinks and very impressed with how much work they put in not a glass was forgotten and candle not out I will definitely be back.... Cheers

Put in our name 3 hours prior to expecting to get in, about 8pm, returned at 11:30pm, we were told we were next , waited another 10 minutes while watching people come out, and go in. Bouncer said we can t know how long people will take to finish their drinks, there are 50 seats.
It was obvious we weren t on the in list. There are other places to support.
