The previous reviews have mentioned this place as good to excellent. Did we dine at the same place?
I went here for dinner with my parents for what I thought would be an "easy introduction" to French cuisine. My appetisers were decent but uninspired. I wasn't expecting to be blown away by escargots bourguignonne anyway, so this was acceptable. My parents' starters were generally very good as well.
Nevertheless, the mains were horrendous. Having had a burger for lunch, I opted for the bouillabaise instead of their "signature burgers" and I'm wondering if the only main courses they can manage is a burger. A bouillabaise is not supposed to be the most complicated dish in the world but a bouillabaise lives and dies on *fresh seafood*. In my case, I had seafood that was clearly "off fresh", the fish was rubbery and tasteless. Even worse, I had a mussel that had the wonderful aroma of untreated sewage. The shrimp was so old it had started to turn mushy. It makes me feel a little ill just thinking of it.
On the brighter side, my parents' mains did not need to come with biohazard warnings. My dad's salmon was a decent idea even though the salmon was overcooked. I should point out that the man generally likes his salmon well done anyway, but this was cooked to the point of being dry and flaky! Mum's duck confit was generally fine and probably should have been named the dish of the night, even though it was dry and surprisingly insipid.
Desserts and coffee were of acceptable quality.
My opinion is that Daniel Boulud should probably reconsider putting his name on this restaurant. It is fine if a 3-Michelin starred chef owns other restaurants under his stables, but diners are coming in to have the reassurance that quality control will be top notch.
This place is saved by having very pleasant wait staff and a generally nice ambiance but I'm sorry - in my books, none of this will save the shambolic quality of some of the produce served here.
