Traveling on Christmas Day, Francois n company made arrangements for our arrival on a difficult Holiday for a host. The facility is beautiful - we arrived right at sunset and the view was breathtaking... the grounds look very well kept as the love given to the building is obvious... Our room wasn t quite as expected, comfortable sans the bathroom. But without having to share a bathroom with other guests as with many B&Bs, it was manageable if it was just my wife and myself. The breakfast omelette was delicious and solid coffee. We ll definitely be back to try a different room. Cheers

I recently attended a murder mystery dinner at the castle. The event was so fun! All the staff was timely to serve the meal, and the soup was amazing! Congratulations to the owner and staff for having such a fun venue.

WAY too expensive for the quality of service. Walls are thin so you can hear everything that your neighbors are doing/saying. Bathroom was disgustingly dirty, tub was filled with leaves and grass debris (as if someone had washed their feet after walking outside). Bed itself was fine, but nothing special. WiFi didn t work. Customer service was not good, the front desk clerk was not friendly and unhelpful even when she was there. As for the food, my husband makes a better breakfast when we re running late in the morning. We should ve listened to the other reviews! Tip: Drive 30 extra minutes to go to Martha s Vineyard in South Haven before staying here - that s a true B&B experience!

Purchased a romance package for our 1 year anniversary.

To start with the good, the wine, chocolate covered strawberries, and the rose were all very lovely.

The bad was that the bed at my house is nicer than the old, sinking bed that they had in their room. We thought we had a room in the "castle" but our room was in some random house down the hill and across the street. No one ever mentioned this to us when we booked the room. The bedroom we had appeared to have wall paper that had been painted over, there was no ceiling light, just two small and not very bright lamps. The bathtub was outdated and a tad grungy looking. I don't doubt they cleaned it, it was just very old.

Breakfast was okay but we had to wait 20 minutes for refills on coffee and for marmalade for our toast. It was presented well but if it had not been included I would have been extremely disappointed in the small portions and lackluster flavor.

No one was at the desk for our checkout. We waited 20 minutes to be told that we could just leave the key. We asked for a receipt and they said they could just email it to us. Then they walked away. We never found when or where to go for our included tour because no one was there to talk to us. The desk was supposed to be open at 9. We ended up leaving it finally at 9:30.

Could be nice but we felt our money would have been better spent at a holiday inn to be honest.

We stayed here for my birthday back in the summer. The stay was the best time I ever had at a bed and breakfast. The room was spacious and nice with a great bathroom. A tornado came through and they rounded us all up and served us drinks on the house in the basement. The next day we were served an amazing meal. I plan to go back again soon!!!

For one, the place is outrageously expensive, and not worth it for the quality. My boyfriend and I stayed in the Queen's Tower and that room is incredibly tiny and outdated. The bed we had to share was basically a twin, smaller than my full size bed at home. We also woke up to a very foul smell in the morning, we assumed it might have something to do with the plumbing. We told the hostess about it and she was far from hospitable about it. Basically told us to get over it. In fact, non of the hostesses are nice, friendly, or hospitable. This place also has many rules, like no outside food or drink "because we have a bar and a kitchen." Sure, you want to pay starting price of $30 per meal? No thank you. We went to the bar, I had a glass of wine and my boyfriend ordered a screwdriver, for just those two drinks it cost us $17. Ridiculous. When we got to the room there were slippers on the bed. I thought, awesome, free slippers! NOPE! Turns out that if you open them your card is charged $6. :/ For such a "fancy" castle and the price of it you would think some cheap slippers would be free. In all, we did not have a pleasant experience at all. It is overpriced, the hostesses are not hospitable at all, which is funny considering that is their job, and too many ridiculous rules. WILL NOT BE GOING BACK. Not worth the "vintage" or "old-time" feel.

Amazingly romantic place to surprise your other half, only criticism is that the website didn t reflect the hours of the spirit lounge and since cannot bring alcohol on the premises, access to the lounge during the early part of the week is also important.

The menu for restaurant looks great but is not worth the amount of money you pay wasn't that good.... Also we had to wait over an hour for dinner and breakfast very slow service... when we checked in the castle customer service was terrible the employees we more into their personal conversation then helping us. The room quality was not so great either. For the price our room was freezing cold too. The castle was cool to tour but ill definitely stay at a different place my next visit to kalamazoo...

The grounds and hot tub and interior are very nice. The staff was marvelous in accommodating our wish to use the hot tub. They had closed it but watched the weather very carefully and opened it for us as soon as possible. View was nice and we had fun. We saw all the rooms and they are lovely. There is one exception. The Victorian, where we stayed (the only one that fits 4 people), had a mattress that was too large for the bed frame and so soft it sagged over the edge of the bed. The room had no special features and a tiny bathroom. Stay at Henderson Castle but choose another room and don't order the complementary eggs. They were very artificial (reconstituted from powder?) strange color/texture. We couldn't eat them.

Do not host your wedding at Henderson Castle. They...

Do not host your wedding at Henderson Castle. They will grossly oversell you on an all inclusive package which you will then need to fight tooth and nail to get anything. For example, they tried to charge us for the rental of cutlery and plates for dinner which is clearly called out to be provided in the contract. They then went on to not rent plates and guests toward the end of the buffet line had to share plates for dinner.

They were horribly understaffed. Water carafes we re not refilled, bread and salads never made it to the tables and they were charging guests for drinks when alcohol was included as part of the wedding package. Additionally, one of the 6 servers left part way through and several guests commented that the bartenders appeared drunk.

There are many other issues, but hopefully you are beginning to see the picture. The owner while onsite the whole time did nothing to support, improve the situation or even apologize for the debacle.

Do not let the beauty of the historical building distract you. You will be very disappointed with your experience.

First visit to the castle Feb 2020 and we came for Saturday brunch. The atmosphere was nice, but, that's about it. The menus brought to the table had dust on them the point where you could draw your name on them. The food was completely disappointing--diner quality at best. Slow service. The bill for this terrible meal was $80. I wouldn't mind paying that, but it was nowhere near that kind of meal quality. I literally felt robbed walking away for what we got. Personally, I'll never go back. There are way too many other places to spend that kind of money and get an excellent meal. Very disappointed considering the potential this place does seem to have.

I would not give this place 1 star if my life depended on it! The only reason I gave it 1 was to be able to publish it. I am in tears right now after getting off the phone with Ruby, the "manager". You would expect a person in such a position to have better customer service!!! I called to reserve lunch to go along with my wine tour that I booked with family from out of town over a week ago. I was informed that they cannot take any reservations and my tour should have been cancelled because they have a wedding booked. She argued with me and raised her voice for over a minute, I could not get a word in edge wise. Then the other line rang and she told me to "hold that thought." Who does that??? I feel completely disrespected and will be requesting a refund. I do not want to give my business to a place who employs people with no morals and no respect for their customers. If I do not get better results from the owner when he calls me back I will be filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

the Staff was more than accommodating and seemed to take that extra effort that made our visit to exceptional. From the be bar a ghost story and fabulous drink he made us to the rose pedals on the table and the personal tour. A bit pricey but the steak dinner was I think the best I had. Thank you for the special evening with friends a event that we perfect.

I attended a wedding at the Henderson Castle this ...

I attended a wedding at the Henderson Castle this past weekend and while we had a lovely celebration, the Henderson Castle as a venue was extremely disappointing throughout the event.

The Castle is beautiful and attendees said the food they prepared was delicious, but they are not equipped to handle events the size of the one I attended (150+ guests). While we were dealt a tough weather hand for the ceremony the bride and groom were prepared to make the most of their day, but continued to be met with issues at each turn that could have been prevented.

The cocktail hour and reception were grossly understaffed and there was a clear time management issue on the part of the kitchen and the staff. The bar at the reception was not prepared, salads, bread and dressing were not prepared or set on tables (and some tables never received them, even after members of the bridal party stepped in to assist staff). The buffet sat untouched for over an hour as the coordinator and DJ, acting as master of ceremonies who was set to release tables, disappeared multiple times without warning.

The first dance and speeches did not begin on schedule due to the missing and over-burdened staff and the entire event ran behind throughout the night, even with a delayed start to the ceremony that pushed the reception start time back. Despite the seemingly well-intentioned employees on site, there was a clear lack of understanding of what is required for an event of this size.

The bride and groom were able to be married, and we were able to celebrate them together with friends and family, but the treatment they received throughout the planning process and on the day of their wedding was appalling, and I would not want any other couple experiencing this as they prepare for their special day.

I would highly recommend that any potential clients considering the Henderson Castle for this size event seek out alternate venues, and anyone currently in the planning process review their contracts with a fine-tooth comb before their big day.

I had to leave a star to leave a review, given the...

I had to leave a star to leave a review, given the opportunity I would have left 1/4 star. Upon arrival I waited, and waited for the girl in the tank top to finish her phone conversation; about 5 /10 minutes before we were even acknowledged. She then took us to our $300 a night suite but oddly enough she didn t go any further than the doorway. One might expect a tiny tour of the room to point out the amenities; I get it now.

We quickly realized we wouldn t be bathing in our room as the tub was filthy, one could easily visibly see the dirt and hair in the tub; more on that in a bit, it gets better. One might expect a bar of soap in a $300 room, nope, not here. Thankfully, we were smart enough to bring our own toiletries because they supply nothing except a 1/2 used role of toilet paper perched on top of the toilet. However, the toilet flushed, most of the time.

We took a tour of the grounds on our own and couldn t help but come to the realization this beautiful property was clearly being run by the clueless. Plastic hangers still affixed to underwater dying plants adorn the porch. Cigarette butts litter the outdoor ashtrays for a nice whiff before you enter the castle; nice touch. Cases of empty bottles for ones visual enjoyment on the patio, a gazebo in need of brick repair, a metal fence that is a lawsuit waiting to happen when someone cuts their arm on the jagged metal posts once more validate, there is no management going on here.

On to our 5 star $132 dinner fiasco. First, let s give credit where credit is due; our waitress, bless her heart, maintained a sense of professionalism throughout this disastrous ordeal. One hour to get a shrimp cocktail appetizer and a baked Brie that was nothing spectacular. Another hour to get our entrees, and again, nothing spectacular and having been in the restaurant business, way overpriced. We were told to let the waitress know we were guest and we would receive $20 off the check; we did, and you guessed it, we didn t. The following day I brought this to the attention of the front desk clerk, (I use that term loosely), and she took my information and assured me I would be credited. It is now going on 3 weeks and of course, no credit as of yet. I tried calling today 8/27/20 got their voicemail, I m less than hopeful I receive a call back.

We signed up for a guided tour because we were genuinely intrigued by what we heard about this place and wished to know more. What better way than to spend $35 for an inspiring tour guided by the professional. Well, the tour guided didn t show and after waiting over a half an hour, the front desk girl was charged with giving us this special 45 minute tour. In the first 120 seconds it was clear my partner knew more about this establishment than she did. Reading a xerox copy of castle facts that sounded like something off Wikipedia was a nice touch; NOT. So for the hint of sarcasm but it was a grueling weekend.

We reserved a 90 minute spa package for I believe just over $200. I would like to say they were on time but, you guessed it, they were not. We were left waiting in the lobby for over 30 minutes for the masseuse to meet us and take us up the stairs to the spa. The wait wasn t without at least a little excitement. My partner missed getting struck in the head by only inches when the restaurant ceiling came in pieces do to water leaks. We were just that close to owning this place DANG! Seriously though, another indication of poor hospitality management, the employees were quick to explain, its been leaking forever, they just don t fix things. Shocker.

Needless to say I m completely perplexed that this establishment has a rating of 3.8 stars. I forgot to mention, I tipped the young man, who was pleasant enough, in an effort to get our
shower cleaned properly, he said he d take care of it and of course let us know he was not the one who cleaned it originally. Wasted tip; no showering Just a filthy establishment don t waste your money!

We went to Henderson Castle for the first time and received a couples massage. The massage was very nice, we have had many before so there was nothing to complain about. However, when we got to the hotel for the first time, there was nobody at the front desk to greet us. We didn't even know if we were in the right place. We were told by the chef to sit down and wait so we decided to sit awkwardly in the dining room. About 5 or 10 minutes later (our reservation time had passed) the woman from the spa came and told us it would be another 10 minutes and offered us a glass of wine or champagne. It was another 10 minutes and we didn't receive any drink, which would have made the wait better. If we could go back for a massage without having to deal with the front desk, we would. We probably won't go back for a long time.

Henderson castle dinner was absolutely awful. The building was so high class and the setting was beautiful. Reasons why it was so bad for me:

-hostess was unkept, in tie-die sweater, and very unprofessional (I don t care how you re dressed, just act professional).
-dirty silverware and incorrect glasses for water and wine.
-waiter removed the charger plates(you leave them and put stuff on them)
- wine was flavorless and tasted watered down(disgusting).
-lobster bisque was luke warm and tasted like a cheese soup, also had a half frozen shrimp in the bottom(disgusting).
-salad was a quarter wedge of lettuce head with what I believe was sour cream on it (disgusting).

We left before our entree even had the chance to show up. It was sad because the building was so nice.

We stayed in the Spring for 1 night, and thought it was an exceptional place for Kalamazoo. Spent a pleasant evening with family on the turret. Earlier in the day, it was healthy walks to the Western campus and downtown (Bell's Brewery and Eccentric Cafe).

Do not want to forget ti mention, the staff was exceptionally pleasant and professional, and i could tell they liked working at the place.

If we had known more of it before the visit, and we might have planned for dinner or breakfast. I have trouble believing some of the reviews I read below; it is our first choice of places to stay on our next visit.

I really don t enjoy writing negative reviews, as I understand the impact that can have on a business. In this case I was left with no choice. I ve never had an opportunity to use their sevices, as my wife and I have had zero luck using a groupon for a couples massage which she gave me for Christmas. We had finally, after 4 attempts, scheduled our massage for tomorrow at 1. We received a call at 8:45 pm tonight canceling our appointment. Apparently they had a massage therapist call in sick and the young lady we spoke with was the backup therapist, but she has other meetings scheduled. Assuming that s all true, I still believe it s far too late at night to cancel the appointment, especially as they offered barely an apology and were unbelievably rude when we told them we would like a refund. We felt like we were a huge inconvenience to them. They won t be getting any business from us or anyone we know in town, which ranges fairly wide. Sad that an apology and a refund could have saved my business, but I digress. I hope this helps someone make an informed decision.

We went for the Castle tour and wine tasting. The tour guide was in character for the time period of the Henderson's. The tour was very factual and historical in nature, we were hoping for more of the fun stories about the rumors of the Castle being haunted though. The wine tasting was fun and interesting. We learned a lot about wine, and the bartender was entertaining.

The weather was horrible so it took us 4+ hours to get there. The driveway wasn't plowed enough so our car wouldn't make it up the driveway. We had to park at the guest house a block over, which also wasn't plowed out. So then we had to walk down the road and up the driveway. When we checked in they couldn't find the key to our room, that we specifically requested. So we had to go to a different room at first but when I complained about it they finally got keys to my originally requested room. They did write a card apologizing and leave chocolate covered strawberries and champagne in my room for me. Nice staff, pretty place, but for the cost you expect things to go smoothly

We were excited to stay at the Henderson castle in June for our anniversary but given the current situation with covid 19 we had to cancel, not only are we out of work now but we have no idea when the stay home orders will be lifted. The owner was made aware of why we had to cancel but will not give us a refund. Its been weeks of calling and leaving messages on his voice mail, email and website page. We are well within the time limit to receive a full refund. We spoke to the lady at the front desk, she took all of our information and said the owner would be refund us. We would have most definitely rescheduled our trip for another weekend but given the extreme unprofessionalism we will stay anywhere but the Henderson! We will also continue to work with our credit card company and the fraud team to recover our money!

This charming bed and breakfast with lots of character and different room options is a unique experience with excellent food, amazing hospitality, and the view from the rooftop at night is incredible. Our stay at Henderson Castle was very pleasant! The employees are friendly and kind. Our room was a historic experience and the bed was very comfortable. The entire castle is an experience with ancient furniture that can not be touched and the wedding area is very nice for a small sized wedding. The downside was the inability to bring in any outside food or drink, which we were bummed about as we wanted to get a bottle of champagne for the bride and we wanted to order food while we were getting ready for the wedding. Overall, a different experience for a wedding that was special.

I purchased a Groupon for my mother for a Spa Day at Henderson Castle, including a massage, hot tub, champagne and strawberries. The Groupon was $160, with an additional $60 in fees and gratuity. Although my mother loved her massage, the rest of the day was a disappointment. The room her massage was in had no air conditioning. The hot tub was not on the roof, but in the adjacent facility and was tiny, filled with murky water and bugs. Additionally there was no hand rail and her guest fell while entering the tub! They were also out of the (paid for) strawberries. What I had imagined as a relaxing day was ruined. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

I met up here with some college friends for a girls' night. We got tickets to a jazz evening they were hosting last weekend. The hostess was dressed unprofessionally and we had to greet her first. She instructed us to get drinks and then we could sit at a table she indicated. The bar tender was FANTASTIC.
The three of us then went to sit at our table and there were still only two place-settings. When I asked for another seat for the third member of our party, they only brought the chair.
No waiter came to our table. After a half-hour my friend had to go ask the bartender who graciously came to our table to take our order.
An hour later, our first appetizer came to the table. There was an event going on elsewhere in the venue, but we only knew this from overhearing from a table that actually got attention from their waiter.
In the middle of the first appetizer and waiting for the second, the hostess came to our table and asked us to move because a guest that had just arrived wanted to sit in that area of the restaurant. There was a four-top beside our table and still they asked us to move.
When I asked if a waiter would be moving our half-eaten dish to the other table she gave a shrug so me and my friends had to humiliatingly move our two place settings and appetizer across the restaurant while the band performed.
At last the bartender found us across the restaurant to bring us our second appetizer.
We had dinner plans that we had to re-work because it took us two hours to do just drinks and appetizers. Again, the bartender was FABULOUS! He was very apologetic for how we were treated and I'd recommend visiting him to enjoy drinks at the bar on the weekends. For anything else, I wouldn't waste your time or money. Though the food was good, the evening was tacky and embarrassing for both the restaurant and for me and my friends.

What a hidden gem! From the bartender , to the service in the restaurant as well as the unique decor and hidden amenities. I can appreciate a vintage style with offering of family owned spirits at the bar to fresh roses and a candle lit on my table. Thank you Henderson Castle for helping a traveling business gal like myself unwind and feel the most welcomed at your hidden gem here in Michigan!

Always love the Henderson! It is a great historic place with lots of charming character. I feel many people come unprepared for what the Henderson has to offer. If you are looking for modern comforts with large sprawling rooms, pools or other modern accoutrements then the Henderson is not for you. If you are looking for a piece of a history, old time living and a trip into the past then the Henderson is a must stop for any Michigan traveler. Oh, and thank you Matt for a great experience at the bar. You are truly one of the greats, one of the last few professionals!

0 stars. The owner is more focused on collecting $$$ and creating deceiving photo opps than providing guests with actual, positive experiences.
We were considering the castle for our French/American wedding. I thought it was great but had to go to France right after visiting. I sent my parents to go see it and the owner aggressively pressured them into putting down a $1,000 deposit. As soon as I heard, later that day, we asked to cancel it because I needed more details. The owner refused. Within a week he had rebooked our weekend with another wedding and collected their deposit, but still refused to refund ours.
It s a shame because I still would have liked to try a visit, but the owner made me feel so cheated, there is no way we could enjoy a stay.
And I know it shouldn t matter but I was especially disappointed with us both being French the owner acted exactly as coldly as the negative French stereotype, which we are fighting against constantly.
However, after seeing all the other terrible reviews, especially about it being not clean-bugs, hair, stains-I m at least relieved we didn t have our wedding there.
