About Cord
Cord: International Peacebuilders in Burundi, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia
Cord is a non-governmental organization that has been working tirelessly to promote peace and reconciliation in some of the most conflict-ridden regions of the world. With a focus on Burundi, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia, Cord has been instrumental in bringing together communities that have been torn apart by war and violence.
Founded in 1967 as an initiative of the British churches to support refugees from the Biafra conflict in Nigeria, Cord has since expanded its operations to other parts of Africa and Asia. The organization's mission is to work with people affected by poverty or conflict to build sustainable communities where everyone can enjoy their basic rights.
One of Cord's key strengths is its ability to work with local partners who understand the context and culture of the communities they serve. By building strong relationships with these partners over many years, Cord has gained a deep understanding of the challenges facing these communities and how best to address them.
In Burundi, for example, Cord works with local organizations such as Christian Action for Reconciliation and Social Assistance (CARSA) to promote peacebuilding initiatives at both community and national levels. These initiatives include training workshops on conflict resolution skills for community leaders as well as advocacy campaigns aimed at promoting peaceful elections.
Similarly in Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia where ethnic tensions have led to violent conflicts between different groups; Cord works closely with local NGOs such as Centre for Peace Building (CPB) which focuses on promoting interfaith dialogue among different religious groups.
Cord also recognizes that sustainable peace cannot be achieved without addressing underlying issues such as poverty reduction or access to basic services like healthcare or education. To this end it runs programs aimed at improving livelihoods through agriculture development projects or vocational training programs that equip young people with skills needed for employment opportunities.
In addition,Cord also provides humanitarian assistance during emergencies such as natural disasters or conflicts which often lead displacement of people from their homes.Cord provides food aid, clean water, sanitation facilities, and shelter materials among others.Cord also supports psychosocial care services especially for children who are traumatized by violence they experience during conflicts
Overall,Cord's approach towards peacebuilding is holistic. It recognizes that there are no quick fixes when it comes building lasting peace but rather requires long-term commitment from all stakeholders involved.Cords' success stories speak volumes about its effectiveness in achieving this goal. The organization continues making significant strides towards creating peaceful societies across Africa & Asia .
