Contact the Elderly is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to combating social isolation and loneliness amongst the elderly for over 50 years. The organization was founded in 1965 by Trevor Lyttleton, who recognized that many older people were living alone and had little or no contact with others. He believed that by bringing together volunteers and older people, he could help combat this problem.
The mission of Contact the Elderly is to use the power of volunteering to enable older people to make new friends and break out of the cycle of social isolation and loneliness. The organization achieves this through its unique model of monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties, which are hosted by volunteers in their homes.
Each month, groups of around eight guests are picked up from their homes by volunteer drivers who take them to a volunteer host's home for an afternoon tea party. This provides an opportunity for guests to socialize with each other as well as with their hosts, creating new friendships and connections.
Contact the Elderly also runs regular telephone befriending services where volunteers call isolated elderly individuals on a regular basis for a chat. This service provides companionship for those who may not be able to leave their homes or attend events due to mobility issues or health concerns.
In addition, Contact the Elderly offers training programs for its volunteers so they can provide support beyond just hosting tea parties or making phone calls. Volunteers are trained in areas such as dementia awareness, safeguarding vulnerable adults, first aid, communication skills, and more.
