Our History
The story of Congregation Beth Israel began in 1854 when eleven German Jews gathered together to form the Hebrew Benevolent Society. Over time, this small group grew into what would eventually become one of the largest Reform congregations in the country.
Throughout its history, Congregation Beth Israel has played an important role in shaping the Jewish community in Houston and beyond. From supporting social justice causes to providing educational opportunities for children and adults alike, our congregation has always been committed to making a positive impact on the world around us.

Our Services
At Congregation Beth Israel, we offer a wide range of services designed to meet the needs of our diverse membership. From traditional Shabbat services led by Rabbi Joel Nickerson to contemporary musical services led by Cantor Daniel Mutlu-Netaneli , there is something for everyone at our synagogue.
We also offer special holiday services throughout the year including Rosh Hashanah,Yom Kippur,Sukkot,Hanukkah,Purim,and Passover . These services are designed to help members connect with their faith during these important times while also providing opportunities for fellowship with other members of the congregation.
In addition to regular worship services ,we have many other programs such as:
1) Religious School - Our religious school provides children with an engaging learning experience that helps them develop strong connections with their faith while also building lifelong friendships within our community.
2) Adult Education - We offer classes on various topics related to Judaism such as Torah study,Talmudic discussions,Jewish philosophy etc.
3) Social Justice - We believe strongly in tikkun olam (repairing the world),and work hard towards making positive changes within society through various initiatives like food drives,clothing drives etc.
4) Youth Groups - Our youth groups provide young people with opportunities for leadership development,socialization,and fun activities like camping trips,dances etc.
5) Sisterhood/Brotherhood- These groups provide opportunities for women/men respectively,to come together socially,enjoy each others company,and support each other through various events like book clubs,lunches,dinners etc.
Our Leadership
At Congregation Beth Israel ,we are fortunate enough have some amazing leaders who guide us towards achieving success both spiritually as well as socially .
Rabbi Joel Nickerson leads us spiritually.He joined CBI after serving congregations across North America since his ordination from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute Of Religion (HUC-JIR). He brings his passion for music,his love for teaching Torah,his commitment towards social justice issues alongwith him which makes him very popular among CBI's congregants .
Cantor Daniel Mutlu-Netaneli leads us musically.He joined CBI after serving several synagogues across North America since his ordination from HUC-JIR.He brings his passion towards music,his love towards liturgy,his commitment towards creating meaningful prayer experiences alongwith him which makes him very popular among CBI's congregants .
Together they make sure that every member feels welcomed,wanted,valued & connected .
