Taking kids there to skate. Some are professional skaters teaching all kinds of levels. At times there are University hockey games you can watch for free like the Rutgers team and Seton Hall. Public skating is cheap and so are rentals. A five rating g for this place! Enjoy!
It is an amazing rink with great open skating times!
Was here for a wrestling tournament (I have also played hockey here) the rinks are decently kept and the place is clean. The sound system is muffled and terrible.
A commuter parking lot, an ice hockey rink led by celebrity JoJo Starbucks, dining with a lake view, a mini-zoo all within the walking distance. In year 2015 alone, the Turtle Back zoo have an total of 755,239 visitors. The zoo opened throughout the year and family members can enjoys a mini-train rides. The Cody Arena also offer ice hockey lesson all year round.
I remember when they built this place. At first I thought what a traffic nightmare for Northfield Avenue. But they do a very good job controlling the traffic on most days and the arena is nice, relatively clean, and the rental prices are good.
One of the best ice skating rinks I've been to in the NY/NJ area. Source: Playing hockey for past 25 years.
Charging an entrance fee to observe high school ice hockey is outrageous!
We'll run and clean. Large and clean bathrooms, snack bar, free parking. Comfortable seats.
Very nice arena parking in summer can be a little crazy.
The people there are very nice. The ice is amazing. Also, it's not to cold you just have to wear a hoodie and gloves and you'll be fine. I would really recommend it.
Very good
Right size
Great teachers
Well
Skating is good. Rental skates are rough -- they had the hardest boots I've ever worn
Great family fun, you can rent or bring your own skates. They have lessons both in skating and goalie tending. Hockey groups have an arena too. Staff is friendly and accomidating.
Everyone was friendly ... Concessions food was surprisingly good
Very well maintained and clean ice rinks. Common areas are well kept. Commissary is very clean and well staffed.
Nice size rinks. Overall good cleanliness, clean shoes for rent. Plesant staff and great instructors, especially Mr. Scott.
It's so fun, I went there with my friends and since I never skated before I had a really good time learning how to. I want to go there all the time. Since there's also a zoo behind it, it's so cool cause I love animals. I bet you would have a great time there if it's your first time.
We are visiting NJ and decided to take grandchildren skating at the Richard J. Codey arena at South Mountain on this rainy morning and it was fantastic! I am in my 70s had only learned to skate on a pond as a kid but this ice looked fantastic and the rental skates were comfortable. Still, I had a momentary loss of nerve as I stepped onto the ice. A lovely arena employee/skater named Ann came right over and helped the 6 & 8 year olds out on the ice and gave us all basic pointers. I was also watching an amazing skater skate figures in the center and it turned out to be Olympian skater JoJo Starbuck who also gave us pointers! Today is her last day of classes but I am going to plan a NJ visit next fall specifically to take her class at this terrific arena. What a great asset for the county! And there is good parking right there.
Decent sized ice skating rink. They have scheduled events, skating lessons and open ice times. Lots of parking. (Don't park in the paid daily lot next to the rink, there's free parking behind the rink.)
Great place to bring the kids to skate can get very crowded
Twin hockey rink large and small for a beginner to expert skaters major hockey teams play they're not professional as well as handicapped leagues Jersey Devils and such as Long Island Blues have played there at their frankenfest something to be seen every year
Very nice rink. Ice is ok but I might have just been because it was warm yesterday.
Awesome all year around ice rinks. Good public sessions and various skating lessons offered here.
A great rink (actually two rinks) with affordable lessons for kids and a free skate that never gets too crowded.
Great climate, many opportunities for enjoyable events, ice skating and has two major land marks connected - Orange Reservoir and Turtle Back Zoo!
Annual "SENIOR WELLNESS DAY" given by ESSX CTY EXECUTIVE, JOE Di VINCINZO (still handsome even with gray hair). Good fun; dancing (live bands); food; giveaways; raffles; massages; friends & wellness info
Really nice arena but thank stand is crazy overpriced
Excellent ice surface for hockey and figure skating. Check out the learn to skate program or family puck and stick night.
Love this ice skating rink. Always have a great time. Every one is pleasant and helpful
Can't wait to go back soon.
Really nice five rink arena, good viewing area from above.... although they pull the curtains if it is a paid event to prevent free viewing.
Good experience. Clean. Ice skating was fun. They had good music playing too. Rental skates were much more comfortable than Montclair State. 2 adults and 2 children was $48.
Very nice rink. Best part is not a lot of people. And occasionally can see really good skaters practicing.
Great place! Nice and helpful staff, very nice ice. Not so crowded.
Wish there were more stick and puck sessions but when there are some its such a wonderful environment. The public sessions are also great and the staff is fantastic!
Great facility to skate at or watch a high school hockey game.
Great ice skating rink. They have really nice group lessons for little kids. The instructors actually make an effort to teach children. The group lessons progress from basic 1, basic 2 and so on.
Parking isn't too much of a hassle. It's free.
Nice place to take kids. The place didn't smell of sweat and it was clean.
Big and clean arena. Great goalie coaching. Go there all the time with my son. He loves it.
The rink was somewhat beat up for open skate but totally enjoyed my private with JoJo Starbuck and they cleaned the ice for class so class was great. Nice rink and atmosphere!
My two youngest kids had there high school graduation here at the ice skating rink
Very good experience! Great place to watch high school hockey.
Beautiful facility and well mainained. Ample fee parking
Clean and safe place for the kids to get out on the ice and skate.
The sound system was absolutely terrible. We were at a graduation ceremony for Orange High school and everything was muffled and low.
For a big arena that hosts major events it was a crying shame.
I m very disappointed that they re not offering any public skating this year. I know it s hard with covid but feel like this is the perfect socially distant activity for all ages and an effort should be made to have it available.
