Coar Peace Mission: Providing a Home, School, and Community for Abandoned Children in El Salvador
Coar Peace Mission is a non-profit organization that provides a home, school, and community for abandoned, abused, and vulnerable children in El Salvador. Founded in 1980 by Father Ken Gauthier and Sister Peggy O'Neill of the Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic, Coar Peace Mission has been dedicated to serving the needs of children who have been left without families or homes.
The COAR Children's Village is the heart of Coar Peace Mission's work. It is located on 22 acres of land in Zaragoza, about an hour outside San Salvador. The village provides a safe and nurturing environment for up to 100 children at any given time. The children are cared for by trained staff members who provide them with food, shelter, medical care, education opportunities as well as emotional support.
The COAR School is one of the best schools in El Salvador with over 1000 students from pre-K to 12th grade. It is administered by the local Catholic parish but receives support from Coar Peace Mission through scholarships and other programs that help students succeed academically.
In addition to providing housing and education opportunities for children at risk or without families or homes; Coar also works closely with surrounding communities to provide resources such as clean water sources which are often scarce due to droughts caused by climate change.
Coar Peace Mission has been successful because it operates on three core principles: love (amor), respect (respeto), and responsibility (responsabilidad). These principles guide all aspects of their work from caring for individual children's needs to building relationships within communities where they operate.
One unique aspect of Coar's approach is its focus on creating a sense of community among its residents. This includes not only providing basic necessities like food and shelter but also creating spaces where residents can come together to share experiences and support each other.
Coar Peace Mission is also committed to sustainability. They have implemented a number of environmentally-friendly practices such as using solar panels for electricity, composting food waste, and recycling materials whenever possible.
In conclusion, Coar Peace Mission is an organization that provides a home, school, and community for abandoned children in El Salvador. Their work is guided by principles of love, respect, and responsibility which are reflected in all aspects of their operations. Through their efforts to create a sense of community among residents and promote sustainability practices; Coar has become an important resource for children at risk or without families or homes in El Salvador.
