This review is regrading the AIANY Architecture and the Lights of Gotham tour.
I was told about the tours run by AIANY by a friend who participated in one while he was in NYC recently and recommended it highly (he in fact described it as the best thing he did on his holiday).
The short version of my reason for writing is while I agree it can clearly be a fantastic experience, my trip was unfortunately completely ruined by the management of people onboard during the journey.
I signed up to the tour for 2 main reasons - the unique experience of seeing NY from a totally different perspective, and to learn about its extensive history and landscape from a professional.
I could certainly see the potential for the experience to be wonderful and highly informative, but my night was totally ruined by a group (or groups, it s unclear if they were all together) of very loud individuals who made listening to the guide totally impossible.
The website and email following the ticket purchase described describes the experience as an informative tour where guests listen to the information being provided - but from the beginning of this evenings tour this particular group of people treated the experience as if it were some sort of a party boat. They were loud, disruptive and only continued to increase in noise as the tour was underway.
My main concern was the lack of management from staff to attend to this issue, despite the clear frustration from others on the trip. It was left to the guide, who was frankly just trying his best, to remind them between sentences to be quiet, and I essentially missed the first half of the tour information because it became impossible to hear the stories being communicated.
With staff waiting on tables across the night, there should have been more of an effort, or some sort of strategy in place, to manage this better, as it completely impacts the value of the experience. Considering the significant cost of the experience this issue made it a real letdown, and hampered how much I got out of what could have been a really fantastic trip.
I feel like I paid for a full experience and received the value of half of it, which is pretty disappointing.
I cannot stress enough that it would clearly have all been a wonderful time - the boat, the guide, the journey, the information - had it not been for this issue, but it was a major issue nonetheless.
