Can Do Canines: Providing Life-Changing Service Dogs for People with Disabilities
Can Do Canines is a non-profit organization that has been providing free service dogs to people living with disabilities since 1989. The organization is based in Minnesota, but it serves clients from all over the United States. Can Do Canines' mission is to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities by creating mutually beneficial partnerships with specially trained dogs.
The organization's founder, Alan Peters, was inspired to start Can Do Canines after seeing how much his own dog helped him cope with his hearing loss. He realized that there were many other people who could benefit from having a service dog but couldn't afford one. Peters decided to create an organization that would provide free service dogs to those in need.
Since its inception, Can Do Canines has placed over 700 assistance dogs with individuals and families across the country. Some examples include alerting their owners to sounds they can't hear, retrieving dropped items or medication, opening doors and drawers, and even calling for help during an emergency.
