Honest review of this school. I enrolled my son so he wouldn t miss a beat due to the pandemic. This school has been operating virtually for years now and should have it down. Here s are the issues. The teacher never really works with the kids independently. They never really get one on one attention other than a chance to speak in a group class (kids on audio) in front of everyone. Kids need to be engaged independently as well. They can t just be called out on the spot before feeling like they know their teacher and their teacher knows them. My son never felt like he could reach out to his teacher directly. So he held so much back and didn t ask questions which lead to incomplete assignments and bad test scores. Also much of the course material was slow paced and boring. Final issue was their attendance system, my son attended his live classroom sessions in my presence the last 2 months and only missed 2 sessions, which were due to internet issues. However, I would get messages almost daily saying he missed sessions. I d reply to the messages and it was like they didn t believe you. Got old real quick. Maybe recommend to a really mature and confident high school student who is very computer savvy.

There is no other online school like CAVA. The teachers are wonderful and the curriculum is top notch. They provide everything you need - computer, printer, textbooks, workbooks, art supplies, science supplies, music, foreign language for middle school.

Trying to enroll my child in this school is more difficult than getting a home loan. I ve called for help several times and have been placed on hold for 30 minutes before giving up each time. You can only listen to the same piano piece playing constantly for so long before snapping! My limit is 30 plus minutes. I m on hold right now, it has been 26 minutes!!!!! I will try another school. I refuse to have my son, who has grown up in the country for the majority of his life, to go to school in South Sacramento!

I love that he isn't bullied, no peer pressure about his shoes, sex or brand of jeans he is wearing. The best reason is that I don't have to worry about an active shooter at his school. The academics are the same as his old school his grades are still mostly "A's" He is loaned a computer and books and they are delivered to my door and return labels are furnished when the year is done. this is our 3rd year and so far its been a great experience.

I love my school because I get to work at my own pace. This allows me to go fast in some subjects while others I may take longer. If I need help, my teacher are just an email away. They get back to you fast and are always willing to help.

Definitely consider California Virtual Academy for...

Definitely consider California Virtual Academy for your student! We are in Santa Clara County, which falls under the umbrella of CAVA @San Mateo and have had a wonderful experience! Do your research so you can learn all that they offer. This is not a "home school" program -- you do not have to personally teach your student! Their day is filled with scheduled Class Connect sessions with a live teacher and virtual classroom full of students like them. This is a tuition-free public California Charter School - even the computer and accessories are loaned at no charge. Classes (with few exceptions) meet A-G college requirements and there are many available which aren't taught in public "brick-and-mortar" schools. Academic Intervention and tutoring is available at a moment's notice. The new interface shows you how your student spends every minute of their time and you can view their progress and grades on a day-to-day basis. Even Special Education services and Individualized Education Plans are no problem. The one real drawback is there aren't a lot of opportunities for social interaction in person - but that's changing! Other families may have a different experience, especially those during the last major interface upgrade, but the new parent portal is up and running smoothly - check it out for yourself! Students can join the school at any point during the school year.

I wish I could give Zero stars. The worst, special ed with iep and the school goes all year without providing requirements in iep. I seriously had to get my CA state rep involved to get any help. They are incompetent and the new k12 curriculum is buggy and crashes constantly. I know at least 5 others like me that have taken our children out of this sorry excuse for a school. DO NOT ENROLL!!!! There are so many other options, choose something else.

If I could give negative stars I would.

If I could give negative stars I would.
The lack of communication is just unbelievable.
While my experience with this school has been short...with that said the little time I have had my son enrolled has been frustrating on every level. At this point I just want my sons records and want to transfer to another school and can t even manage to get his records.
Good luck if you want to speak to a human about that. I have been unsuccessful in trying to reach anyone to answer the phone at k12 or cava. I have sent emails and left multiple messages....no one reply s or returns phone calls!

Both my boys are actors and CAVA allows them the flexibility to work. We have been with K12 since 2012. Both my kids test advanced in state testing (if that means anything). My older son is now in high school honors classes which are recognized by the US system. We've tried K12, AAS (Academy of Arts and Sciences, Thousand Oaks) it did not compare to CAVA. CAVA is awesome! Both my boys will probably graduate from high school through CAVA.

Teachers and students get more one on one when needed to ask those important questions but most importantly my child learns in an environment he feels safe in-home. He has all the tools he needs through CAVA to study and learn on his own terms to a degree allowing him to shine. He has made friends for life through class connect sessions with 100s of other students and has been able to share and ask questions with his peers. He is excelling. What more can a parent ask for? PS~ He is not bullied anymore!
