The airport staff here is probably the rudest I've ever encountered from all of my travels around the world. I was there for a layover to catch a flight from NYC to Vancouver with only 20mins to clear. The customs person I encountered asked for routine questions - who was I staying with (my boyfriend), their address, phone #, what my profession was, etc. They also asked me if I had a return ticket, and I showed it. At this point, I only had 10 minutes left, and this person asked me if she can see my phone to look at any message exchange I had with my boyfriend. I naturally refused as it was a ludicrous request and an invasion of privacy. As she was asking this, she was also calling my bf I was staying. She told me that if I wanted to make it on the next plane, which was about to leave me, I better give her my phone. Desperate, I handed it to her. She scrolled through the messages, while asking my boyfriend questions to see if our story matched. When the call was done, she let me through the gates in silence.
The point is that I understand that they have these routine things that they do, especially due to the current political climate with an influx of Americans coming in, but abusing their authority when a person is clearly desperate to make their flight is unacceptable. All the documentations were provided, and she still insisted to invade my privacy. I've gone to countries that require multiple visas just to visit, and never have been treated this way. Calgary doesn't have much to offer with the exception of Banff and the stampede. They need to calm down.
