Never thought I'd see a theatre with an area actually designated as a quiet room so people can use that if they need a break for whatever reason. Truly accessible and trauma-informed. Love the sense of community here.

Fantastic. Saw "Shove It Down My Throat" and that's the best play I've ever seen outside the classics. I was utterly blown away and their welcoming attitudes shape the experience you get. As a safe place it excels, as a center for the Arts it dominates and as a small-time, local and utterly ethical business, it's where I plan to visit again and again. Keep up the amazing work!

A great place to take in live independent theatre with a focus on highlighting the voices of queer, trans, non-binary folx & POC. Amazingly curated seasons (and also a great spot for a dance party/club night as the space also converts from a theatre venue to a dance spot). A staple space in the fabric of the Toronto identity.

My wife and I, both devout druids, were looking for something to do on our 75th anniversary. Mildred (my wife) saw and ad in a local newspaper called "NOW" about a play featuring some sprightly young men trying to rent a place in an abandoned warehouse in New York. Apparently there was to be lots of signing and dancing and good old fashioned big band tunes. We bought our tickets, sat down and immediately jumped up again. The seats were sticky. Two chaps in leather laughed and began to dance to steel workers strike speeches. The lights dimmed and a man with an erection appeared on the stage. Taken slightly aback, Mildred got out her opera glasses. After he sang a song about bondage, rainbows and lubricants, the rest of the cast appeared. All naked. At this point I looked around and saw that Mildred was the only lady in the theatre except for a man dressed as Marilyn Munroe. The show went on forever and at one point a man was lead around on a leash by a another man in a leather thong. I think I recognized that man as my local Councillor Adam Vaughn, but I could not be sure. All in all, Buddies in Bad Times was a theatre with lots of men.

About Buddies In Bad Times Theatre

Buddies In Bad Times Theatre: A Leading Destination for Queer Theatre and Culture in Toronto

Buddies In Bad Times Theatre is a renowned theatre company based in Toronto, Canada. The company has been at the forefront of queer theatre and culture for over four decades, providing a platform for artists to showcase their talents and express themselves freely. Buddies In Bad Times Theatre is committed to producing artistically rigorous alternative theatre that challenges societal norms and promotes inclusivity.

The History of Buddies In Bad Times Theatre

Buddies In Bad Times Theatre was founded in 1979 by Jerry Ciccoritti, Sky Gilbert, Matt Walsh, and John Palmer. The company started as a small collective of artists who were passionate about creating queer-focused theatre that reflected their experiences. Over the years, Buddies has grown into one of the most influential queer theatres in North America.

In its early days, Buddies faced significant challenges due to societal stigma against LGBTQ+ individuals. However, the company persevered through these obstacles by creating thought-provoking productions that challenged stereotypes and promoted acceptance. Today, Buddies continues to be an important voice in the LGBTQ+ community by providing a safe space for artists to explore their identities through art.

The Mission of Buddies In Bad Times Theatre

At its core, Buddies' mission is to produce artistically rigorous alternative theatre that reflects diverse perspectives on gender identity and sexual orientation. The company aims to create an inclusive environment where all voices are heard and celebrated.

By showcasing diverse stories on stage, the company hopes to inspire audiences to think critically about issues related to gender identity and sexual orientation.

Productions at Buddies In Bad Times Theatre

Buddies produces several shows each year ranging from plays written by emerging playwrights to experimental performances created by established artists. The productions are often provocative pieces that challenge traditional notions of gender identity or sexuality while also being entertaining.

One notable production from recent years was "Gertrude And Alice," which explored the relationship between Gertrude Stein (a famous writer) and her partner Alice B Toklas (also a writer). This play was praised for its innovative storytelling techniques while also shedding light on an important historical relationship within the LGBTQ+ community.

Another popular production was "The 39 Steps," which reimagined Alfred Hitchcock's classic film as a comedic romp featuring only four actors playing multiple roles throughout the show. This production showcased how even traditional stories can be adapted into something new when approached with creativity.
