I enrolled into Bitmaker Labs as a part of the October 2014 Web Development cohort, and since then I was hired and now continue to work at Kobo as a Web Developer/Producer. Starting out, I had my concerns that my only real formal education in web development was through an after school program in beginner level HTML. I knew I wanted to learn more and so before coming to Bitmaker Labs, I spent many hours going through tutorials like CodeSchool, Lynda, and even Youtube. However, I often found the learning experience to be completely one-sided. Bitmaker Labs is a platform for learning that pushes you to challenge yourself in being better prepared for the tech industry. Of course, the lessons with the instructors are awesome but I felt like one of the most invaluable resources was the shared knowledge between classmates and instructors on how to better prepare yourself as a junior developer. The program creates a space for you to not only improve your skills and knowledge in building web applications but the right habits and mentality to accelerate your development. In a nutshell, Bitmaker Labs is stepping stone to launching new ideas, expanding your network in the developer community and preparing you with the tools necessary to succeed as a developer. If you ask me whether you should attend Bitmaker Labs, my response would be to simply ask you whether the thought inspires you of being able to create new ideas from paper to full-fledge applications? Are you willing to be engaged and participate with your classmates? And lastly, are you willing to put in the time and effort to learn as much as you can? If so, I would absolutely recommend Bitmaker Labs. There s no doubt that there is a lot of work and a lot to be learned. However, if you come into Bitmaker Labs with the right mentality to be involved and excited to learn, the opportunities and possibilities for you as a developer are immense and it s up to you how you want to plan your next step.

I work as a Graphic and Web Designer in a small marketing company. We have to be very versatile and have many skillsets since we are a small department of a big company. My Front-End Developments skills were pretty intermediate but I was looking to become faster and work cleaner. So I recently took the Front-End Web Development night course at Bitmaker in Toronto to advance my skill sets and discover new resources to assist in my job. I had minimal expectations as my understanding of HTML/CSS was already very advanced. The first 2 weeks were a little redundant for me, but after the first 2 weeks, I was learning tricks and skills that I didn't even know existed. In 12 short weeks I went from a novice to a professional. The professors were extremely helpful, and even stayed till 11pm one night to diagnose a computer issue for me. The course is very demanding, since there is so much information to learn and cover in 12 short weeks. I spent a good chunk of time on weekends doing reading and drills to make sure my skills advanced to where I needed to be for the following week. I wouldn't recommend this course to anyone who is unwilling to do this homework/studying as you wont take anything away from the course. This course is definitely for people with serious interest in Front-End, and not just hobbyist. If I had to list a complaint, my only complaint would be that some of the students didn't take the course as serious as me. I was there for work and was trying to absorb as much information as possible. However, I found many students wouldn't do the homework, or drills/reading, and wouldnt be at the level they needed to be at for the following class. This would then slow down the class getting all the students up to speed. Not really a Bitmaker issue though. Overall, I am fully satisified with my experience. I would love to take more courses at Bitmaker.

I'd like to share my UX (User Experience) at GA in Toronto. I took the UX/UI Product Design course, it was a 400 hour intensive Bootcamp over 10 weeks. There were a few growing pains at the beginning as the original name, Bitmaker, changed to General Assembly and began using new materials provided from the General Assembly curriculum. It worked itself out, and at every phase we were asked by staff how it was for us, the students. I can't say enough about the content curriculum and the instructors, also the office staff. There's a welcoming energy with the people there, the instructors and the staff want you to succeed and will readily be available to help. I was in a class of 10 students who came from very diverse backgrounds - all very intelligent, savvy peeps which I admired. The optimal experience is to work in teams on projects, you learn so much more when you are part of a team, helping each other, communicating, and working collaboratively. If you are planning on being a student, do open yourself up to inclusiveness and teamwork, be open to accepting others, no matter their culture, age, or background, you'll find you can gain so much more.

I was in the first cohort of Bitmaker Labs. I absolutely loved it & would recommend it to anyone who is willing to put in hard work. It wasn't easy by any stretch. But, it definitely allowed me to switch careers and get a great job. Regarding the prep course, you get out of it what you put into. Some of my fellow students didn't take it as seriously as they should have. Programming is hard and it takes a lot of focus and determination to become proficient at it.

I had a great experience with the General Assembly team learning how to use Excel. Kyle went through the material at a slow pace which made it easy to digest the information. The team also did a great job at answering questions that came up in the session.

Developing myself and learning something new have always been important and #FreeFridays by General Assembly Toronto provides me with this amazing opportunity. Last week I tuned in for #SEO Training with Salim Holder who shared super useful tips and tricks. A week before there was an event for Google Analytics. I also attended Shopify Holiday Meetup with Joshua Doner and Stephan Peralta who trained the #ShopHERE team. The hosts shared so much great information for small businesses in the live doc. Just wanted to thank everyone for making it possible. Keep learning, there're always plenty of opportunities!

I had a great experience changing my career with GA's Software Immersion Immersive program. It took me from 'a bit of coding experience' to job-ready in a mere 3 months and I was able to get my first development job just 2 months after graduating. It's definitely a lot of work but well worth it!

I was lucky to have the full time Web Development program included as part of a compensation package that I negotiated with a local Toronto startup. Only 3 months after finishing the program and I'm already beginning to see how being able to code will pay off both professionally and personally. The program exceeded my expectations. I was expecting to leave the program knowing how to code. What I wasn't expecting was how empowered I would feel after finishing. Having access to such incredible staff, who happen to be experts in the industry, make me feel like I can take on any coding challenge or entrepreneurial project that I have in mind. Definitely worth the investment.

I had a great experience at Bitmaker Labs. I came in looking for technical skills to launch my own startup and felt highly confident in my coding abilities by the end. The program was well structured and I found the staff to be knowledgable and helpful. The other students were motivated and friendly, which made for a great learning environment. They also had some great perks set up for us including yoga memberships, weekly talks from developers & entrepreneurs, and free beer during events. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone interested in entering the tech industry.

Scam artists. Took the UX & Product Design course. Half the instructors left midway through the course. The 'career support' was burnt out and ended up quitting right after we were finished. They're just churning out people into an over-saturated, under-skilled job market. Do yourself a favor and save your money. DO NOT GO HERE. They will teach you very little that you couldn't learn from home for free. Their career advice is apply to everything and meet as many people as possible. Now that they've been bought out by General Assembly things will be even worse. Please, save your money. I'd do anything to take back going here.

I took part in the UXDI bootcamp last year and had a great experience with the GA Toronto staff. The course is very fast passed but covers all the basics of UX design and a bit of UI. I would recommend this to those who have no experience in the design industry and but want to learn! Their career services are also excellent and made all the difference for me.

I had a great experience when I attended the intro to digital marketing class that was taught by Joshua. I love that their instructors are people who were from or are in the industry as you actually get to learn about how it's done in the real world. I highly recommend people go to the free classes as a way to see if you want to pursue a career or education in these disciplines. The GA team was very friendly and helpful. They would stay behind after class incase you have questions or need help/more insights.

Overall horrible experience, not worth the tuition. Currently not able to find a relevant job. Instructors cannot answer all of students questions. Multiple cohorts where instructors go on vacation while classes are running. Lots of classes where instructors forgot that they were meant to teach, so students waited sometimes for an hour without communication. Coaching always gets cancelled. I'm from two cohorts ago and have not heard of anyone from my class related getting jobs.

Bitmaker Labs promotes preparing you to step into a new role as a web developer seamlessly in just nine weeks. Can you really learn to be a developer in just nine weeks? I quickly learned by the end of week two that this highly depends on what you re willing to put into the program. The intent isn t to teach you everything there is to learn about programming, it s to equip you with the right amount of both technical and problem solving skills to take your own learning further. Learning how to learn is just as valuable as a technical skill, especially in an industry or environment where things are changing so quickly. I took the January 2015 cohort and found a full time job as a Jr. Full Stack Developer within a week of finishing the program, where I still work today. At work I'm building web apps with Django and Python, though I knew nothing of either prior to starting. My education at Bitmaker allowed me to transfer my skills to be able to pick up this language and framework quickly. I believe this is a testament to what Bitmaker teaches beyond technical skills. I had a great experience at Bitmaker and value the non-traditional education route they take. I thought the curriculum was well structured and moved at a good pace. Extra assignments were available to students who were looking for the added challenge. The instructors and TA's were extremely helpful and stayed quite late to help students, especially during the final two weeks. The students that seem to do well are those who are prepared to work hard, work collaboratively and stay inquisitive.

If I could give them zero stars I would.Just an awful, expensive waste of time. They try to be really nice, and try to be useful, but are technologically incompetent, unprofessional, and inexperienced teachers. Save your money. There are better programs online or go to a real school.

Skepticism is understandable. The bootcamp value proposition does seem too good to be true and indeed, many bootcamps are overstating their claims about how much value they bring to students. I m a Bitmaker alumni, and I firmly recommend its program. It has been one of the most difficult learning curve of my life, but most importantly it made a high-impact! Code is hard and do understate that aspect, but Bitmaker Labs has designed a perfect program to dive in and feel comfortable learning. Your code journey does not stop after the 9th week of Bitmaker Labs Bootcamp and its up to you to sharpen the skill set that has been given to us at the lab. I highly recommend continuing being curious and mastering your skills.

Absolutely phenomenal experience. Bitmaker provided me with thorough lessons on current technologies and key concepts which enabled me to jump into the work force right after graduating. I had no prior coding experience so enrolling was definitely a little bit intimidating, but they effectively teach everything from the ground up. If you're considering getting into coding, or if you already have some coding experience and want to expand your horizons, I'd highly recommend attending Bitmaker.

I enjoyed my experience there mainly because of the people. After the fact is another story. You re just as likely to get a job if you just learn the skills at home. I took UX Design and while I am happy that I learned about design, the industry doesn t seem to think I know very much. The guidance with what to do afterwards is very poor here and they don t offer support after the fact unless you DEMAND it. Bear that in mind. I would maybe try part time courses. I do regret in many ways the $10,000 I blew there. Think twice! There s lots of places to get skills especially for the price.

My experience at General Assembly was amazing! I never thought I could learn how to code, but enrolling in the Software Engineering Immersive Program at GA proved me wrong. It was definitely challenging (learning programming is NOT easy), but I felt like everyone, including my peers, instructors, and TA's, were extremely supportive and genuinely cared about my learning experience. It was worth all the effort and every cent. I would absolutely recommend GA to anyone interested in learning Software Engineering (or Data Science or UX Design) and I would encourage them to challenge themselves and to learn more. ANYONE can do it, you just need to have the will to learn. And a HUGE shoutout to Alex, Aidan, Dennis, Afira, Meaghan, and George!!!

A graduate of Bitmaker Labs fourth cohort, I joined the program to follow my passion for web development. I chose Bitmaker because I felt it had the most comprehensive exposure to help build a solid foundation for entering the web development world. This included: - Teaching both front- and backend web development in tandem, focusing on Ruby on Rails, an excellent framework for building a career (and apps!) off of. I felt that other programs in Toronto didn't have as comprehensive a career and instead focused on front-end development. - A flipped classroom which focused on instructor interactions, of whom there were many. Very approachable and always willing to go the distance to ensure concepts were understood for students. My personal favourite was when students didn't fully understand how the internet worked (for ajax calls), so we had an impromptu lecture on the internet. Lots of lightbulbs went off after that. - Building a 'community' both within the classroom and outside in the Toronto tech community. Internally, students learned and improved their skills together and got comfortable with pair programming, which is how this industry functions. Externally, we were able to network and get excited for our future. The most important thing prospectives need to realize about coding bootcamps is that you don't become an expert taking these short programs. If you want to become an expert, go back to school for a proper degree. What this program teaches is a solid foundation for learning web development on your own after you leave the program, and (hopefully) through your new career. Bitmaker does this really well, and for that I'm thankful I was a part of it.

PLEASE read this review before enrolling in any course at Bitmaker! I spent a TON of money at their full-time web development course last year but in the end didn't learn very much and wasn't given the career help that I needed to find a job. Everything taught in this course and other courses plus much more can be learnt online for free or for almost nothing (check Codecademy, TeamTreeHouse) and at a much better quality. Also, very little help was offered in terms of career counselling even though they promised excellent post-course support (not a job offer) in this area. Please learn the material online at your own pace and you will learn much more, at a higher quality and at the fraction of the cost!

I took GA's Software Engineering Immersive Flex program (aimed at those who are working full-time) after extensive research on my options. Look no further than GA. GA's courses are thorough, informative, and very relevant (to the point that we were talking about changes in technology that we were using, as those changes were being rolled out). My awesome experience with GA started with a phone consultation with Maria Wu who cleared up any questions and apprehensions I had about making this commitment and who was incredibly supportive in my decision-making process and course prep work. The level of transparency and community in GA was important to my experience, and being able to reach out directly to the campus manager/student success manager Meaghan Tellier via Slack(!!!) was super helpful pre-, during-, and post-course in supporting me both on an academic level and personal level. If you're looking for career support, GA's is the most comprehensive - the time, attention, and resources that were shared with me during- and post-course were meticulously curated and incredibly effective. Shout-out to George Brumfitt and his decisive expertise in this department, as well as his tailored approach to each student's unique situation! Huge shout-out to my instructor Denis Dujota and my TA David Bland. Both of them cultivated an environment of learning, supportive challenge, and mentorship. At times, class felt more like working under guided mentorship from a thoughtful, patient boss who wants the best for you, and a senior colleague who is showing you the ropes. I can't express my gratitude enough to both Denis and David (and also, there's literally no way I could have gone this in-depth without their collective support and expertise). Thinking about a boot camp? Want to put yourself in a position to learn, grow, and level up in your life and aspirations with a supportive community and network of staff and alumni? Put your trust in GA's team and program!

The admissions rep repeatedly encouraged me not to wait for the next cohort to begin, suggesting that the significant amount of required prep in object oriented programming (ruby) wasn t necessary - absolutely not the case. To his credit, he was super helpful in getting me the cool super high interest financing to cover half the 10k tuition fee. (Still paying for that). I went in with a decent grasp of HTML, css, cursory JavaScript, a ton of optimism and excitement. But when I was expected to solve fairly complex algorithms on day 3 in a language I had 0 experience with while still trying to catch up, it really soured the experience. As with most subjects that increase in complexity with the addition of new information, coding only gets more difficult and midway through the 9 weeks I was totally demoralized. During that time, bitmaker was acquired by general assembly and one day we were abruptly told that this was in fact not the same institution we had started attending at the beginning of the cohort. The whole vibe seemed to shift. They were dealing with personnel changes and other things that accompany such mergers. Students were not the priority. Their career coach was ludicrous and ended up leaving herself before the cohort had concluded. In the end I believe that there is value in going through such a course if properly prepared and without buying in to the marketing promises of a new career out the gate. Moreover, I wouldn t recommend over extending yourself financially based on that expectation. The sad part is that had I been advised to hold off and take the extra month or so, I would have probably had a totally different experience. I can now solve those algorithms with my eyes closed - but much of this I learned by myself with free resources (thanks for all the amazing contributions folks!). Whatever you do, stay away from General Assembly Code Bootcamp. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Best of luck comrade.

Save your money and time. These boot camps are design for high turnover so they can get as much money and quickly as possible. The price is rediculous. That's the cost of 2 semesters of a well known college/university for domestic students. User Experience Course - Bitmaker 1st Cohort Prior to the course I was very much into UX but didn't have any training or experience in it. My wife was taking a different course at Bitmaker and she suggested I should take the one about UX. I looked into it more and thought it would be a good idea. Right from the first class I was really impressed with everything I was learning. The material was very good and they provided a lot of links to read up on your own. I think I learned more outside of the class but overall I think my UX unedrstanding grew tenfold. Especially after going to a UX conference that the instructor suggested. We worked on a project throughout the 12 weeks. That was very helpfull in practicing our new skills as we learned them. Maybe there could have been a bit more time dedicated to that part during class hours. Overall, after taking the course I knew that I had to change my career from graphic design to UX and I think that the course provided a solid foundation for me in understanding UX.

I recently completed the 9-week web development course at Bitmaker. After doing a lot of research, I choose Bitmaker because I wanted to learn both front and back end skills, and I they offer the opportunity to accelerate the learning process. At first I was a little skeptical about the schedule because when you have four hours every afternoon, it is easy to get distracted and be unproductive, however, as long as you are willing to remain focused and dedicated, and put the time into the program, this was the best part of the day. It was during this time I was able to work on the assignments and figure out what concepts I understood and where I was struggling. I quickly learned that the true value in the course is the instructors and TA's. They all have a wealth of knowledge and experience in the industry. More importantly, they were great at spending time with each student to answer any questions we had. What I really appreciated was that the TA s would help walk us through each problem and solve the problems ourselves rather than giving us the answers right away. Prior to enrolling in the course I had no coding skills and was struggling to learn independently, but after completing the bootcamp I have successfully build a web app and I am now able to pick up new skills and have a much easier time learning new languages.

I decided in May to quit my full time job and take the 9 week immersive web development course at Bitmaker Labs as I had a strong interest in learning Ruby on Rails. The course provided much more detail on the lifecycle of the HTTP request than I had anticipated and also an introduction to TDD as well. The instructors are very knowledgable and helpful, and the entire environment was very fun and welcoming! I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking to learn web development with no prior experience in programming.
