It seems London's been having a love affair with a...

It seems London's been having a love affair with anything that's not at street level - from the likes of The Shard, Sky Garden and Tower 42 towering above the city to places like WC, a wine and cheese bar that's popped up in former facilities underground. Whilst this is nothing new, I think a few places are stepping up their game. Take The Cocktail Trading Co, for example. A downstairs speakeasy, yes. Like all the others out there? No.

We stepped inside on a Wednesday night with an hour to kill before a dinner reservation (that's another story). Most of the tables were already busy save for a spare couple that were booked out - but the friendly waiter said we were free to perch until their real owners arrived and happily for us, they never did. This gave us the perfect opportunity to check out the decadent decor - framed caricatures of familiar faces along one wall, a curio of objects along the other and an upright piano by the bar for those who fancy tickling the ivories.

Turning our thoughts to the booze, we were quick to choose. I went for the Urn-aged Corpse Reviver No 2 which came served on a grassy tray complete with grabbing zombie hands and a thirst for more. Mixing Egyptian embalming gin, fortified honey wine, mandarin liqueur, lemon juice and absinthe this was a dream - not too fruity, not too sweet, not too sour but with enough depth, smokiness and warmth to have me hoping for a refill.

S went for the No 42 (also called the Welcome to Kentucky, have a nice day) which blows any previous efforts at presentation straight out of the water. A Chinese takeaway box is filled to the brim with Jim Beam, ginger and plum infusion, yuzu juice and matcha tea then topped with crunchy noodle bites and edible flowers. This is cocktail genius - and well suited to the bar's self-proclaimed productivity.

The waiters were not only attentive but genuinely some of the friendliest I've ever been served by - a real testament to a bar that's smack bang in the middle of the most stressful shopping streets in London.

Cool bar with an extensive selection of unique drinks, good music, and relaxed atmosphere. Giving it a 4 because while I understand cocktails are the focus (rightly so!) having a few more options to have a bite at the bar would be helpful so customers can stay longer - the only savory snack when I went were olives. Service was super helpful, quick and kind. Overall recommend.

Great experience and amazing service!

Great experience and amazing service!

We went for a stag do for a masterclass in cocktail making, the entire experience was amazing! The team working with us had loads of knowledge and passion for their trade!

They created an incredible atmosphere and nothing was too much trouble. If you just want a cocktail, this is the place to go. If you want a cocktail and an experience, then I can't think of anywhere better to go!!!

My go to cocktail place! The stuff are super friendly, I love the chilled atmosphere. I always get the lychee martini, which in my view is the best in London. My husband and friends will experiment each time with different drinks from the menu, each seemingly more delicious than the last! I think well priced for the quality of the beverages. Highly recommend!

Lovely little cocktail bar. Staff are lovely. Live music when we went (Wednesday night). Only popped in for a quick drink. Just a heads up, I won t recommend the espresso martini. I don t think they have a coffee machine so the drink is just Kailua, vodka and sugar syrup (I think). It was presented really nicely but it was far too sweet and strong for my liking. If this is how you like your espresso martini, then go ahead but I just wanted to give anyone who likes it a heads up that it might differ to what you are used to. All in all, I loved the bar. Really nice atmosphere and lovely staff. Next time I ll choose a different drink.

My two friends and I loved the cocktail masterclass. Elliot made it really fun and interesting, we asked for it to focus on gin, as that s our friend s favourite spirit. Elliot was really knowledgable and passionate, made some amazing drinks - and we had a go at making a martini behind the bar, which was really cool. They were really accommodating and friendly, and the bar itself has a great vibe. I d really recommend it.

If you walked by this place and didn t go in, you messed up.

The atmosphere is fantastic. There s live music on Wednesday s (shout out to Jimmy the incredibly talented guitar player who learned a song I wanted to hear so he could perform it the following Weds!), otherwise there s always some upbeat mix of old school hip hop, Disney songs or classic rock playing in the bar.

My flatmate and I went in once and were hooked: service, value and staff way above par. It s now our local because of what a gem it, and its incredibly lovely staff (Pete, Luke, Nate, Tony, Ollie and Elliott), is.

TL;DR: This bar is seriously awesome in a sea of cheesy Shoreditch touristy bars. The people there are pretty awesome too.

A place I will always call home.

A place I will always call home.

I walked into this bar on my second day in London and had my last drink in UK there two years later before I flew back to Australia. It wasnt long into me living in the city did i start referring to it as "old faithful" religously bringing friends and family there who would be welcomed with warm smiles and hugs from the team. I still count everyone I met at CTC as a friend and every drink imbibed on their hallowed ground as a pound well spent.
Have one for me whilst your there, maybe even ask them for a Rye-an Gosling

Tucked beneath Central & Co. this is a dimly lit, intimate venue hidden away on Great Marlbrough street. Cocktails were great, service attentive and friendly - All and all a lovely little gem in an unexpected place. Recommneded for date night, or intimate gathering between a few friends.

Really cool little cocktail bar . Service is awesome, staff happy to serve and always smiling, courteous and helpful. Wasn't provided with any peanuts (as some review state) which is a shame - love peanuts with a drink! Decor, music and ambience is just perfect . Could really spend hours and hours here chatting with friends .

Well worth a visit though...for the unique experience of great service, ambience, presentation style and really lovely staff

Great service and good choice/variety of cocktails. Some very unique options which were quirky yet still quite tasty. Price is the reason for 4 stars, bit too much for me but as i said great quality

Great cocktails - both on and off the menu. I'm usually put off by gimmicks but the quirky presentation and props only added to the experience of a great drink here. A nice cosy bar with good atmosphere, good service and chatty, friendly staff. Drinks arrived quickly too so no waiting around with aloof service, like a lot of London cocktail places. The music was good but not too loud to prohibit conversation - something I always look for in a bar.

Just walked in because the sign was interesting, but ended up finding perhaps the coolest cocktail bar I've ever been to. The drinks were incredible but what blew me away was that the experience was just as good. The bartenders are extremely knowledgeable and great conversationalists. Not only did I have the best old fashioned I've ever had but I left having learned a lot about the history of cocktails and the industry. I cannot recommend this place enough, it is worth it to visit even once for a truly memorable time. Bonus points for great music.

My friend and I came here on 31st January and absolutely adored this place! I love the little menu booklets, our cocktails were artisan, our server Rad was friendly, and I also liked having peanuts on the table. Please give my compliments to the bar tender who was on that night!

This is a fabulous little cocktail bar. The staff are welcoming, funny and unpretentious (which is something that could easily be expected in Shoreditch). The cocktails themselves are delicious and beautifully presented. I loved it.

This cocktail house is everything you would wish for. The staff will explain each cocktail and they truly put an effort to keep you happy while serving you amazing cocktails.

Their drinking snacks pair quite well with a lot of the cocktails and they somehow manage to play live music without disturbing a conversation - great extra point to them on this

Fantastic and unique cocktails and very good prices. The American Pie tasted exactly as you'd expect and I can't wait to have another. Only the best can get onto their menu! Will definitely return again.

Having almost everything on the menu and visited more than once, a friend of mine treated my partner and I to the cocktail class hosted with the owner.

I cannot speak highly enough of the experience. From the knowledge of cocktails to the drink that we made, the whole thing was great.

10/10 Would recommend anyone looking for hours of great drinks and great company.

Had to wait a few mins for a table but we'll worth it.

Prices are what you would expect but the quality and novelty are there too.

Loved this place. Lots of strange concoctions of liqueurs. Great waiting staff. Be prepared to wait for a spare seat as they are at a premium. However of it isn't too wedged they don't mind you hanging around.

Very nice tasting cocktails. Unique ideas. Good ambiance. Venue is a bit small but good if you don't want to be overcrowded. I did feel that the drinks were a tad small, would have been a 5/5 if it was a little bigger. Probably because they want you to get home safe lol

An extremely charming cocktail bar, with great drinks that show attention to detail and lovely decor. We popped in late on a weeknight and thoroughly enjoyed the live pianist who had the whole bar belting Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid at the top of their lungs. A great way to end an evening. If I lived closer than an 11-hour plane flight, this would be a regular haunt.

This could well be my new favourite spot in Shoreditch! From the fabulous flintlock pistols on the door, to the bowler hat-wearing T-Rex skull on the bar, this place packs a ton of old world charm into a small space. My partner and I enjoyed a lovely early evening here, trying numerous options off the menu as well as a few off-menu requests, all of which were brilliant. After a recent trip to New Orleans we were keen for some classic hurricane cocktails, which the bartenders whipped up in authentic style, just one sip transporting us right back to the Mississippi! Seriously, they were as good as the best Louisiana can offer.

In fact, we loved the bar so much that we returned later in the evening with friends for another round.

The cocktails on the menu all have really creative presentations; clearly the staff take great pride in their art and it s just such a pleasure to find a place like this where so much love and attention goes into the drinks. One of the cocktails even came in a cardboard Chinese takeout carton, topped with crispy noodles. When the staff are having so much fun with the drinks, how can you not have fun as a punter?

We go to Shoreditch fairly often and from now on I suspect we will always be stopping in here.

Oh and I love the Chemical Brothers reference on the doors downstairs.
