One of the best hotel I have ever stayed! They did really well in turning this old prison into hotel. My room was made from two prison cells and you still can see the old shape. The room is cozy and the interior is really nice. Breakfast is located at the basement - near the dungeon! The staffs are really friendly and helpful. There's also free tour of the prison if you fancy. Overall, the best hotel experience!

A thoughtful experience. Confortable, practical, cosy and very gentle service. Furthermore you walk around these enormous corridors and think how it must have been when it was a prison.

The gym is small but functional and the original cells kept are wirth a visit

We spent 3 nights in the hotel, at first night there was an issue with shower so staff offered us to change a room. In general staff is very friendly and helpful, really liked that hotel and staff are into prison idea, they have 2 former cells as a museum and staff tells you stories from prison's past.
Only problem is that if you want fresh air and open window it can be disturbing, one night we had windows above smoking area, other night garbage had been collected.

This was fine for somewhere like Finland. But quite pricey for what you get a former prison cell that still smacks of privation. The room was tiny and bleak, windows were high above and small. At least it was clean and the sheets were crisp.

My wife and I spent a very pleasant evening in this unusual hotel which was a working prison right up to the early 2000s. The food was excellent and the staff very professional and friendly. I would recommend this hotel to friends and family.

Despite the kooky nature of the hotel, the beds are extremely comfortable; on king sized beds, they are the kind that you will not feel your partner move and there are two comforters, so no fighting for comforter. The bathrooms have heated floors. I was worried about light since we were here in late spring with 16.5+ hrs of daylight, but the blackout curtains did an awesome job. Also, the restaurant is supremely delicious with lots of local flavors; a must try water is served in tin cups!

Located just out of the city centre, but well connected with a tram stop just outside. Rooms are well presented and light (for former prison cells!). The views aren't the best but the breakfast is delicious.

Room was quiet and cozy with comfortable bed. However the room was a bit small for two people. It also was dusty more than usual. And if you want some fresh air -
windows are problematic to open because you need a chair to reach them. No problems with shower water pressure.
Breakfast was quite good. Hotel offered relatively inexpensive parking on premises (on a first come first served basis).
Overall a pleasant two night stay in an unusual hotel.

Great hotel, we enjoyed our stay there. We were here in the winter and did not use any of their advertised outdoor amenities, but the location was great, the room was comfortable. The floor in the bathroom was heated! We got an extended checkout at no charge, since we went to Suonmellina and couldn't get back in time.

Neat, non-mass hotel in a quiet location, well connected. Excellent food and helpful staff, special mention to Sam.

Extremely nice, not an ordinary hotel. Nice, quiet location but still easy to get, even with your own car. Great food (lamb recommended) and super friendly staff.

Prison themed hotel that is hosted a building that used to be a Russian Empire era prison. Location is fine, about 15 minutes to the city center and has plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance. Rooms are about average for a upper mid tier hotel, some suites have saunas in them. What gives this hotel the 5 though is the amazing staff, cleanliness and one awesome breakfast buffet.

In an unlikely a place as you can imagine, a former jail, is a beautiful, and extremely comfortable hotel. The common areas and the room are very inviting. The staff go out of their way to help the guests. For example, I found the room a little too cool for my comfort, and they cheerfully provided a space heater. Also, the restaurant is excellent, although a bit pricey. Unfortunately it was often closed by the time I returned to the hotel, but a glass of wine (good wine, too) was always available. The transportation is extremely convenient, with a tram stop right outside the hotel. I would definitely return here.

Very good !! tasty, great service, super attentive and polite waiters, and the very original ambiance. The restaurant is housed in a building where it was a prison, retaining some original information of the place.

I stayed in the hotel for 8 nights during my visit to Helsinki, it is located in a quite area which is in a walking distance to most of the city attractions, also there is a tram in front of the hotel. The breakfast was very good. And the atmosphere was great, also it is near to Viking line ferry terminal.

Great atmospheric place! Rooms with large bathrooms are very nice (I got a free upgrade as a regular customer). Very good breakfast with strawberries and Thai fruits. Expensive parking, but no need to worry about the car. The location is very good, very central. There is a bicycle rental.

Probably one of the best and most original hotels in Helsinki. The hotel is located in the old prison with its history. One of the cells remained intact, you can try on the life of prisoners. The food is delicious, the rooms are excellent.

Absolutely a lovely hotel where I hope to get a stay someday. The hotel is well located, in the middle of a valuable and historic setting. The hotel itself breathes history after being a prison before. The old has been revered in a beautiful yet modern way. Breakfast really good and plentiful. The rooms exude history but are also decorated in a modern style. A must get to enjoy even for one night.

Hotel Katajanokka,

Hotel Katajanokka,
one of the most extraordinary hotels that I have come across.
!! Urgent !! Recommended and beyond.
Apart from the little thing that makes you feel like you are in jail , this luxury hotel is really worth every euro cent (or Finnish krona).
The rooms are very cozy and furnished to a high standard. Everything a (2.5) cell needs can be found here. Desk with communication facilities, modern bathroom with underfloor heating, large, soft double bed and full-length mirror. Escape plan on the inside of the cell door! The windows are a little high, but who wants to see the misery outside? A small loopholes is located at the level of the navel and can reveal a view of freedom.
Dead reindeer can (should!) Be eaten in the cellar. Not exactly lavish (more in the price) but served very delicately.
Various torture rooms such as fitness rooms and the like can also be found here. (Who really wants to)
And no, there are no ghosts here, from former roommates. But artfully designed dossiers, that which.
The single rooms or collective accommodation in the basement should be avoided for the night!

This prison turned into a hotel is an interesting concept beautifully executed. The architecture retains the general prison outline, though obviously everything is much nicer and the rooms themselves are quite comfortable. Breakfast was just a little disappointing due to limited selection. Location is great - walking distance to the city center, and right across from a tram station.

The hotel reformed by the prison is superb. I recently finished the episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. Ghost Knight Robbery, and then I experienced the feeling of living in a prison. Hahahaha, the breakfast is delicious, and the furnishings of the room are very complete.

A past hotel, without a doubt the best I've ever been to. Located what was the old prison. It is located in a very quiet area and at the same time close to the center. There is a tram stop right outside the hotel. The distribution inside maintains what was the prison and the cells are converted into rooms. They have a sauna for the use of hotel guests. The very complete cell-room and the very comfortable bed. The breakfast room is located on the ground floor and the best is the breakfast which is very abundant and the metal dishes as if you were in prison.

Really cozy, clean and different hotel! It was really interesting to look at the insulation cell and the group head. Really great experience. Breakfast really versatile. There was also fresh porridge, smoothies, etc. so you could eat well. At dinner, we went to the chateau. The food was really tasty, service good!
