My review is about the Cancer Care Center. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 bone cancer in the head and neck on May 25th 2016. Due to the complexity of the surgery. Dr. Sonnenburg , an otolaryngology ( Ear Nose and Throat Specialist / Surgeon) that had first discussed my case with me was very upfront and helpful. He made the decision that due to the size of the tumor and type of surgery I would need, he would place me under the care of another Otolaryngologist / Oncologist within the Aurora system but was located in Milwaukee. I appreciated his honesty and candor. I've been going between Marinette, Green Bay and Milwaukee for nearly 3 years as a result of the cancer. Each step of the way, I had someone from the facility always helping me. I never felt alone or that I had to put on a brave front. Most of my visits were spent in laughter, but yes, some in tears. The nurses, bless each and everyone of them!, are wonderful People are quick to post or talk to everyone they meet about a bad visit or situation, but few will do the same about a good one. A negative comment will hit 10 people in minutes, a positive one will take a year to get to 3 people. Sad but if you think about it, most likely not too much of an exaggeration.
I would personally like to take a moment to thank every single member of my medical team. The physicians, the nurses, the front desk staff, the volunteers that would visit me if I was overnight or longer, and yes, the staff in the gift shop and pharmacy for sometimes just taking a moment to visit even when I was browsing. Nobody there ever made me feel ugly or self conscious about my face due to the damage by cancer. I'm still going through reconstruction but all that did was create a bigger cheer club for me from them. They know me by name, the hugs are free and often given. The Doctors have always made me feel like I can tell them or ask anything and not be awkward about it. Though I wish to thank them by name, that would be another mile long post. Instead, to all of you, thank you. You have made my very difficult life a bit easier and mostly, you have given me hope and reason to keep fighting. My deepest gratitude to whomever decided that BAMC/Aurora should be built and by whom it should be staffed, kudos to you! You have fans in my family, my friends and especially in this very little Croatian woman.
