Astroscale: Pioneering the Future of Space Exploration

Astroscale is a private company that has set its sights on securing the safe and sustainable development of space for future generations. The company is dedicated to providing on-orbit servicing across all orbits, making it the only one of its kind in the world.

Founded in 2013 by Nobu Okada, Astroscale has quickly become a leading player in the space industry. With offices in Japan, Singapore, and the United Kingdom, Astroscale is committed to developing innovative solutions that will help ensure that space remains a viable resource for humanity.

The company's mission is to create a sustainable environment for future generations by removing debris from orbit and ensuring that satellites are properly maintained. This will help prevent collisions between satellites and other objects in orbit, which can cause significant damage to both spacecraft and infrastructure on Earth.

One of Astroscale's most notable achievements was its successful demonstration mission with its ELSA-d spacecraft. Launched in March 2021, ELSA-d was able to capture and dock with an inactive satellite using magnetic technology. This groundbreaking achievement demonstrated Astroscale's ability to provide critical services such as debris removal and satellite maintenance.

Astroscale's vision extends beyond just cleaning up space debris; it also aims to promote responsible behavior among all stakeholders involved in space exploration. The company believes that collaboration between governments, private companies, academia, and civil society is essential for achieving long-term sustainability goals.

To achieve this vision, Astroscale has developed several innovative technologies such as End-of-Life Services by Astroscale (ELSA), which provides end-of-life services for satellites at their end-of-life stage; Active Debris Removal (ADR), which removes large pieces of debris from orbit; In-Orbit Servicing (IOS), which provides maintenance services for active satellites; Space Situational Awareness (SSA), which monitors objects in orbit; and Mission Extension Vehicles (MEVs), which extend the life of existing satellites.

In addition to these technologies, Astroscale also collaborates with other organizations around the world on research projects related to space sustainability. For example, it partnered with JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) on a project called "Space Tethered Autonomous Robotic Satellite" or STARS-C. This project aims at developing technology capable of capturing small-sized debris using electrodynamic tethering technology.

Overall AstroScale’s commitment towards creating sustainable environment through innovation makes them stand out among others within their industry sector . Their dedication towards promoting responsible behavior among stakeholders involved within this field shows how they are not only focused on their own business but also have wider social responsibility towards our planet earth .
