We booked for an amateur on the advice of well-advised friends and can only recommend attending on Wednesdays. The price is fair compared to NY prices for a show but the show is definitely worth it. The atmosphere and the show in the American way. the presenters are exceptional and the audience is very responsive. No big deal for those who do not speak English because we get caught up very quickly.

The famous Apollo Theatre. Call ahead of time to check what shows are playing before you go. The theatre is smaller than it looks on tv. The prices are very reasonable depending upon which artist you are going to see. Have fun.

Beautiful place. Clean and well taken care of. The have an elevator for the handicapped or disabled. They have coat check and bag check for large items. The seating was cool the place is much smaller in person then on TV. There's a bar on every floor which was great. Bathrooms were very nice and clean and there's just so much history there it was amazing. I can't wait to go back!!!

The double glass doors part like waves against roc...

The double glass doors part like waves against rocks, and nostalgia brushes across my face, and seemingly kisses me gentle on my cheeks. Ancestral pride lifts me high as I seem to dance into the Apollo Theater. A brick and mortar building held together by Black Love, black pride, and black unification. My lips part as they give way to involuntarily smiling, and I am home. The cool breeze holds me in its arms, and I from safe from the harm waiting outside. I feel safe from the racist slurs, prejudice antics, and unwarranted from those not my shade...not my hue, simply because I'm not their shade...not their hue.

The row of seats are at attention, not a one is slouching. They wait. They wait for us to take roost... And humbly, we do. The crimson red curtains have never changed, only thickened with black history, and the history of other diverse cultures and traditions. She has opened her arms to embrace everyone, as she wishes everyone would embrace her children...every deep shaded one of them.

My last visit was to see my village Auntie, Mo'Nique. She made us cry, she made us laugh, she made us reflect, she made us think, and she's made us understand. As always, on a Mother's Day weekend. She made us smile.

Thank you Apollo Theater, for allowing our village Auntie, Mo'Nique, to grace your stage once more, year 4, and salute all the mothers who and lovingly attended.

Since opening its doors in 1914 and introducing the first Amateur Night contests in 1934, the Apollo has played a major role in the emergence of jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, and soul all quintessentially American music genres. Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown, Bill Cosby, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, D Angelo, Lauryn Hill, and countless others began their road to stardom on the Apollo stage. Today, the Apollo is a respected not-for-profit, which presents concerts, performing arts, education and community outreach programs.

The neo-classical theater known today as the Apollo Theater was designed by George Keister and first owned by Sidney Cohen. In 1914, Benjamin Hurtig and Harry Seamon obtained a thirty-year lease on the newly constructed theater calling it Hurtig and Seamon s New Burlesque Theater. Like many American theaters during this time, African-Americans were not allowed to attend as patrons or to perform.

In 1933 Fiorello La Guardia, who would later become New York City s Mayor, began a campaign against burlesque. Hurtig & Seamon s was one of many theaters that would close down.

Cohen reopened the building as the 125th Street Apollo Theatre in 1934 with his partner, Morris Sussman serving as manager. Cohen and Sussman changed the format of the shows from burlesque to variety revues and redirected their marketing attention to the growing African-American community in Harlem.

Frank Schiffman and Leo Brecher took over the Apollo in 1935. The Schiffman and Brecher families would operate the Theater until the late 1970s.

The Apollo reopened briefly in 1978 under new management then closed again in November 1979. In 1981, it was purchased by Percy Sutton a prominent lawyer, politician, media and technology executive, and a group of private investors. Under Sutton s ownership, the Theater was equipped with a recording and television studio.

In 1983, the Apollo received state and city landmark status and in 1991, Apollo Theater Foundation, Inc., was established as a private, not-for-profit organization to manage, fund and oversee programming for the Apollo Theater. Today, the Apollo, which functions under the guidance of a Board of Directors, presents concerts, performing arts, education and community outreach programs.

Visiting the Apollo Theater was on my bucket list for some time, as I learned about the theater s role in shaping African American culture and reading about how the theater helped propel the careers of many famous celebrities like Jimi Hendrix.

Although our group didn t get to watch any performances at the theatre during our visit, the staff at the Apollo Theatre were really friendly and let us hang around the theatre and ask questions about the theatre and its luxurious history.

Watching a performance here is definitely on my to-do list next time i m in New York!

Legendary concert hall located in the heart of New York Harlem, where the greatest orchestras and musicians of blues, jazz, soul and gospel passed.
Aretha Franklin, Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzie Gillespie or Count Basie all contributed to making the Apollo Theater the most relevant club of Afro-American music in North America.
The Amateur Night, which began in 1934 and still remains, is a contest of emerging talents where great stars of music such as James Brown, The Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder or the aforementioned Ella Fitzgerald were discovered.
The 125st station. from the A and D lines of the metro is a few meters from the theater.

Absolutely the worst and dirtiest neighborhood in New York City. If it's not the junkies that bother you it's the random people shouting they hate white people. Not a place to bring a date or family too unless you have a gun. I've lived in every Boro in New York and Harlem is disgusting
