I had a severe bout of gastroenteritis. Went to the ER. As part of the admission process -- apparently this is routine at Alta Vista -- I was given a CATscan. (When I later told my GP the story, he was incredulous, scandalized, disgusted ...) Because the machine is so powerful and can see the smallest things inside you, this then led to worries being expressed about my liver and esophagus: "It's probably nothing but ... We can run the additional tests now and insurance will cover it or you can take care of this some other time." Sort of freaking out, I decided to do "now." Long story short, the tests (2 more CATscans and a camera-down-the-throat procedure) came back negative. I was in the hospital for a total of 18 hours. The hospital bill alone was -- no, I'm not making this up -- @ $38,000. Of course there was the ER co-pay plus the supplementary bills that came in the mail over the next couple of months, which added maybe $2000 more. So, 40K total. Amazing. For the stomach flu. Speaking just in terms of medical service, the several doctors and nurses looking after me did their jobs very well; the main doctor supervising my case was obviously competent and caring and I appreciated him a lot. But in terms of billing, Alta Vista is insane, surreal. It's a for-profit hospital, and they're going to get their money and then some and then some again. Be prepared for large out of pocket expenses even if you have insurance: the hospital gets the insurance companies to pay exorbitant charges, and on top of that it squeezes you too for another 10% or more. The American health care system is seriously messed up, and this hospital could serve as Exhibit A for the problems involved. My recommendation: go to Christus St. Vincent in Santa Fe. And call your health care provider for advice on where to go for X-rays, MRIs, etc., because you can find these way cheaper (meaning less cost for you) in Santa Fe.
