My nan was in hospital for 2 weeks, was not allowed to have a shower until surgery. The food was revolting and dry I'd always have to bring in fresh fruit!
The staff were so unorganised it was a joke. And to top it off my nan caught a bug that lingers around hospitals called golden staph!!!!!!! Now my nan has to live with it for the rest of her life.

Not the best care at all, i went in for a lap band...

Not the best care at all, i went in for a lap band replacement. I did not get much care at all after it. Its was a overnight stay turned into a 13 day stay.
When i had the surgery they had accidentally nipped me with an surgery instrument of some kind. but it was the other side of my body from where they had operated it caused me to have 7 units of blood transfused and i had pain machines attached to me and i hadn't been out of bed once after getting on the ward. i need to open my bowels it hit me suddenly i rang my bell after 37 mins it was answered it was too late and told them if i could have pan i won't make it..............they said no they dont use them any more instead they helped me to the toilet but i was doing it on the way how embarrassed was I. So i asked for social worker and told her what happened it was said it wouldn't happen again. it did they never answered my bell before 37 to 40 mins after i pressed it I am to scared to go to hospital now its just over a year this happened to me. I'm still affected by it now. I have asked a few times now t o have my files to the Austin for my fill and they said they will sort it for me. I haven't heard from them at all. I'm sad about what happened they said it was rare if they were sorry they would have given me the care I needed after it because its their fault and i can't do anything about it at all. I had to stop writing as I had a panic attack. There is NO after care at all even though it was their fault. it has affected me so much even now over a year on

Public hospitals have copped their fair share of flack in the past for a host of reasons mostly caused by (in my opinion) from lack of funding. My experience with an albeit minor emergency could only be described as outstanding. I was seen to rapidly and left feeling every part of the assessing, processing and following procedure left no room for improvement. A heartfelt thanks to everyone I came in contact with and be assured at least in my case, you get a very big thumbs up from me.

Disappointment is a polite word for this place as the service provided to my niece over the last18 months smacks of either complete incompetence at best or just negligence at worst
I know this is a training hospital but that just tells me how bad the trainers must be in what they are doing with their employees.
The sooner caul field rehab can Sever their relationship with the Alfred the better the outcome would be for their long suffering patients at the hands of the Alfreds indifference.

Our son was flown to the Alfred from Tasmania August 2016.He had a massive heart attach and was in ICU for 3months and cardiologists , Drs and nursing staff where absolutely amazing . The care and compassion was unreal. He had an LVad implanted(artificial heart) in October. He was released in March to return to Tassie and returning every 2 weeks. Sadly he passed away on Sunday night July2ND 2017. We can not speak highly enough for everyone that tried so hard to keep him alive. They were all amazing and thanks for the last 11 months is so inadequate. We are so grateful. Made some lovely friends in that time THANKS.

Got sassed off as if I'm supposed to know which block I should be in like I've been living here for the past 10 years. I was just shocked. Like I know I'm healthy and not a patient here but wow...

I would give NO STARS if I could. My dad went in for a triple bypass, it's been 7 weeks and he is still in serious jeopardy of not making it home because of the dangerous aftercare. He's been giving drugs multiple times (DAYS) that he is allergic to resulting in him vomiting his chest apart. You would think 2 RED ARM BANDS would cover such a mistake. The broken wire punctured a lung and a blood vessel so mum turns up to find him unconscious in a pool of blood. His arm where they took the vein out wouldn't stop bleeding and was infected. His lung got infected from inhaling vomit. His sternum and ribs have 2 different bacterial infections and new wire had to be removed with some bone. He now has an open chest with a vacuum seal. Now his in an isolation ward with an antibiotic resistant bacteria in his gut. The doctors tell us that probiotics would be very beneficial but won't give it too him because they are changing antibiotics and want to measure / compare results. He's had 7 operations in 6 weeks. He's so sick now I wonder if they are going to pay for his funeral !!!!!!!!! They are NOT doing what's best for him they are all ducking for cover. We have paid for yakult and probiotics to be given, we also pay for private physio. My mum is 144 kms from home, I'm over 300 kms away and my brother has flown in from Perth. I thought it was the best hospital around, I think now he should've just lived with the heart problem, he might last longer than in their care!

If you are an overseas patient and you not sure if your health insurance will cover the costs please ask the price of each medicine, each test and even the price of the place where you are being attended.
Never believe the information given by the reception as it will be wrong, they used to say that you will pay just the emergency fee and this includes blood test and x-ray and this is untrue. If you need to go to the emergency room, make an appointment with your trusted doctor after leaving the hospital. The chances of your diagnosis being incomplete are big. I wouldn't recommend this hospital.

The worst experience i've ever had in emergency visits. Nurse was rude, heartless and not helpful at all. I was told that my case (broken rib) was not their (hospital) problem, it's GPs. Only wish she's in my situation and got told of that. See how she feels.

Was moved to the Alfred from Sandringham (which was a lovely hospital), and in to the Infectious Disease ward which felt a bit run down. Couldn't open the windows for fresh air. I had a toilet that was out of order, and seeing as I had acute gastro so was an issue. Some of the nurses on shift were amazing but there was a couple of nurses who were just terrible. Took ages to reply to calls, were unhelpful, forgetful, and made it a really unpleasant experience. I am so grateful to the two nurses who were fab though as it made getting through the whole ordeal slightly bearable. I definitely never hope to be back in that hospital though.

After 2 months long waiting period and many mistak...

After 2 months long waiting period and many mistakes made on Alfred's end (i.e. referral not being lodged, no communication nor updates, referral has been rejected by outpatient without my consent and refused to provide me information in details).

I felt belittled and NONE of the medical staff really cares about my case.

I just been told by a female outpatient receptionist or nurse:"Go back to see you GP because Alfred Hospital does not offer this services, this is so much I can say, alright have a good day and hang up on me" at around 1:50pm today.

Here is the whole story.

I have lived in AUS for more than 18 years and have been to Alfred Hospital 3 x times by now, if I could give them 0 or -1 star for rating, I would.

1. first appointment was made on the 17th December 2018 seeing a dermatologist to examine a changing mole (well, could be skin cancer). I have been examined by 2 x female doctors at the time and been advised by one of them, they will send a referral letter to outpatient and outpatient will arrange an appointment with plastic surgeon clinic and put me on waiting list.

2. On the 5th Feb 2019, I had a fish bone stuck in the throat and happened to visit Alfred Hospital again. During this visit I've found out from the Nurse practitioner that NO REFERRAL has been sent and nor appointment has been scheduled to remove the changing mole....

SHOCKED! If I wouldn't be "lucky enough to had a fish bone stuck in my throat", I probably will never find this out....

Almost had tears in my eyes at the time and the Nurse Practitioner (Phil if I am remembering his name right) helped me to put through a referral.

Not to mention that, I've arrived at the emergency department at around 8am - 8:30am and been waited until 4:30pm - 5:00pm and finally the doctor comes.. I have to say this doctor was good.

The morning nurse was kind and warm but the afternoon female nurse was very, very impatience and I can even tell from her face and expression how much she hated her job... being a nurse.

3. Waited for another 9 days, and today still haven't heard anything from the Alfred thus made a phone call to follow up. Expecting being placed in the waiting list at least.....

AND In the end been told Outpatient has rejected and declined this referral and patient has been advised.

I have never been advised... unless if your guys have made a phone call to someone else by mistake..

The reason being rejected is because that Alfred does not provide this services. When I inquiry on which services they refused to give me more information and wish me to have a good day and hang up on me.

In conclude, I was sent to Alfred by my GP to remove a changing mole.

Who would think a hospital like Alfred don't have mole removing services.

I still don't believe Alfred don't have this services and I felt whoever from the outpatient handled my case probably didn't even pay attention look into the case and just had it rejected.

Extremely disappointed and have 0 confidence of this hospital now.

Really appalling. As a visitor of a patient I was verbally and physically assaulted by the ward clerk at the burns unit. I made a complaint to their patient liaison service and was just dismissed and told it was "a learning experience." She continued to be rude and verbally aggressive whenever we rang the hospital to enquire about our relative. You shouldn't hire hostile angry people to interact with patients and visitors.

I recently had a total knee replacement at The Alfred. I was in there for 6 days. The nurse's were very polite but hardly ever saw them. In the beginning they were on time with the medication. When I need to go to the loo they put a bed pan with a cardboard insert inside it under me that went ok. Next time I needed to go the nurse just put the cardboard container under me. Guess what??? I wet the bed as I sqashed the container, I waited so long so there was no way I could hold on. I asked for the bed to be changed so many times . I was not rude to the nurse's as I think they are so under staff. But to leave me in a wet bed all night is not reasonable at all. The service was appalling. The food was really bad. I think Macca's would of been better....
I've been in The Alfred before and it wasn't that bad before. ,
It's so sad that everything is about saving money in the end it's wasting money when people are treated with such disrespect.

Best emergency department out of all the Melbourne...

Best emergency department out of all the Melbourne hospitals both public and private. The nursing staff were excellent, equipment state of the art and facilities brand new. If you are having a heart attack or serious trauma this is the hospital to come to. TAC have poured cash into the emergency department to deal with serious road trauma hence why the facilities are state of the art. 3 nurses to every patient leaves the private hospitals ratios well in the dust.

Thank you to the paramedics, the nurses and doctors attending me and saving me from great distress. I felt safe, respected and very cared for. Renal Ward is amazing. Renal Doctors are amazing. The nursing staff work unbelievably hard and are extremely professional and caring. I live because of them. After a recent experience with Bell's Palsy, I visited the Alfred Hospital. The staff were friendly, understanding and completely professional. The diagnosis was swift and accurate as was the prognosis. The medication prescribed was perfect to resolve the issue which it did within 3 weeks. I could not recommend the Alfred highly enough. This was certainly NOT a review I ever had on my list to do!
I had a very unexpected heart attack just before Xmas.
This wonderful institution and it s dedicated staff saved my life!
So how could I not give them 5 Stars!
THE WHOLE IS GREATER THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS is very apt here.
The doctors, their incredible expertise, their accessibility, the comprehensive range of facilities, the nursing staff, the pharmacists, the administrators - all these people came together seamlessly to get me on my feet again!
And this is what they do every day for hundreds of patients like me.
I can only hope that The Alfred and other institutions like it get more funding and staff/nursing increases in future years for the important work they do.
If only governments spent more on basic health issues/funding instead of building more sports stadia!

Disgusting unprofessional behaviour from the triage nurses Maria and
Sian @ this hospital
I went to the hospital to get help as my finger was in pain from 2 fractures in my finger and one of the nurses said I shouldn t be there as they only deal with life /death situations and one nurse threw a ice bag on the table and told me to use that on my finger
Across from me then I witnessed them 2 ladies being over nice to a young man even one of the women was sitting on the floor in which I found quite odd behaviour not only odd but unhygenic the other nurse then came back to patronise me further by telling me I had no fractures even though when I was ex rayed it came up 2 fractures as the original doctor had stated
with severe swelling , redness and lumps on my finger I think I deserve to be treated a lot better than I was
disgusting them telling me just to go to my GP the next day

I'm a patient in multiple clinics there for chroni...

I'm a patient in multiple clinics there for chronic disease in multiple systems, including cancer, in emergency quite a few times, so I've seen a lot of the hospital over the past ten years.

They are particularly well organized, with friends of mine fairly senior in other hospital administrations commenting that not all hospitals do "pre-admission clinics" for surgery. For example, before kidney surgery, rather than the night before have a few questions "what are your pills? any allergies?", they get you in a week before to go over everything, avoid nasty surprises, almost on a conveyor belt: blood tests, urine, ecg, see anaesthetist, surgeon, pharmacist to go over your meds, found out I was epileptic (so they knew to get details to have neurology pre-prepared in case anything wrong happened on the day, and have time to get their advice on anaesthetics beforehand). And saw urologists a second time after they had reviewed everything everyone else had seen. Amazing. Took only a couple of hours.

All the specialists seem to see me not as just "their" organ, but a whole integrated system. The cardiologists will ask kidney-related questions, for example. The respiratory and kidney specialists will ask about heart issues. The neurologists will ask about my kidney function.

There is a reason it has been the primary trauma centre in the state - there is no place to handle a sudden load of emergencies like it. I've been in there when they've had less critical patients in emergency overflowing into reception, bringing the carts with BP monitoring out into reception - and they've seen me (a little slow, understandably), but still been careful, known not to do the normal thing and take me off a new drug giving a problem, because they've, despite being rushed, checked up the 6 month plan for me, so known how the "normal" thing was not the right thing.

Sure, the buildings are a bit creaky, but the administration and staff are top notch.

And for visitors, the food court at lunchtime is about as good as anything you'll get on Chapel Street for a reasonable price. ;-)

Emergency staff - Jonny (nurse) and Dr. Julian were fabulous and care and explanation of what was going on with my father who was in respiratory failure was unbelievable. Staff in 4East were also great - especially Ebony (nurse). Only downfall was that sheets had not been changed the entire 5 days my dad was there, neither change of gown. Also, meals were terrible and only 3 meals served per day with no morning or afternoon tea. 15 hours is a long time without meals for an elderly ill patient to be fasting. Otherwise, cannot fault and best care provided.

Repeatedly asked what was going on with tests and scans etc over a few hours and no one could/would tell me anything. In the finish, they told me to ask my daughter.
Slack as. Went back next day to them up, my daughter was sitting in a gown in the waiting area, no blanket offered to her. Not good enough.
