"A good place to work while looking for a job", was a review that I never forgot. If you are considering Ames the biggest reasons are, OJT, local resident, or you have everything paid off. The should probably do whatever to make sure you don't become stuck with AMES. Ideally try to be the third situation otherwise AMES is a black hole. I think it's designed to be that way. If people have extra money it opens possiblities. If you are check to check you will go along to get along.
They even bring people in off the street because it under cuts the regular experienced worker. Honestly it's quite clever. They pay the apprentices enough to not quit yet not enough to build a decent tool set and financial cushion to leave. Several apprentices thought they would get to keep their issued tool set.
I asked them why would they give you your freedom?

The best reasons to work at AMES are the people and it's a relatively calm place. Otherwise I would constantly consider other options. It's built on cheaper labor and government incentives. Which leads me to the real question. If you are renting the property cheap, getting 0% county tax liability for 25 years because of a building a big new hanger that was paid for by the state, who is getting paid?
It doesn't seem like the county, state, or workforce are getting much out of this deal.

There is palpable resentment from the workers. It probably wouldn't be as bad if they didn't tell the work force in a meeting soley about retaining labor that they had a record year with 40% profit increase. Also after buying pemco. When asked about wages after a boastful speech the workers were told that the parent company said, "no!"
I used to joke that they probably asked God and he told them that the employees didn't deserve more because Jesus doesn't love them.
After being disrespected so blatantly, and having their shifts moved around for the third time in two years and second in 6 months people were done. They were doing whatever to get out and escape everything.
The ones that stayed were enraged. It was in the air and apparently even some of the higher ups could feel it.
Then for some reason a executive decided to get foosball tables to fix the morale. I got so many laughs out of that and the retention meeting. That really pissed people off the idea that something that so simple would fix everything. To be honest it was a nice gesture, but an insulting one no less.

I had already started considering other jobs and when contract agencies started throwing some large numbers around I had to seriously think about it. I regretted not taking the STS Delta wifi mod. Some were claimed to get $2000 a week.
We are all selling our lives for money. Money comes and goes your life you can't get back.
That's why I left for a job making double. I regretted leaving my crew they are nice people I was pretty happy working with them.

If only the company invested in itself and improved it's operations they might be able to become a nice work place. Maybe even pay more while being a relaxing place to work, because of less resistance and obstacles to do jobs.
As it stands it's only a good job for those on the way in or out of the field.

Good place to work. Learned tons and achieved a lot. Had a great and extremely knowledgeable manager. Worked both hanger and line during my time there. I was always encouraged to learn, do, and educate further in every area I could. I would work there again and would recommend it to any AMT I know. Good wages, great benefits!
