About AGSM

AGSM: The Centre for Big Data Research in Health

AGSM is a leading research center that specializes in conducting research on drug and alcohol use, trends, harms, prevention, treatment and drug policy. The center is dedicated to providing high-quality research that can help inform public health policies and improve the lives of individuals affected by substance abuse.

At AGSM, we believe that big data has the potential to revolutionize the way we approach public health issues. By analyzing large datasets from a variety of sources, including electronic health records, social media platforms and mobile apps, we can gain valuable insights into patterns of drug and alcohol use across different populations.

Our team of researchers includes experts in epidemiology, biostatistics, data science and public health policy. We work closely with government agencies, non-profit organizations and academic institutions to ensure that our research findings are translated into effective policies and interventions.

One area of focus for AGSM is understanding the impact of substance abuse on vulnerable populations such as youth, Indigenous communities and people living with mental illness. Our researchers have conducted studies on topics such as opioid overdose prevention strategies for First Nations communities in Canada; patterns of cannabis use among young adults; and the effectiveness of integrated care models for individuals with co-occurring mental health disorders.

Another key area of research at AGSM is evaluating the effectiveness of different treatment approaches for substance abuse disorders. Our team has conducted randomized controlled trials on interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI) and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). We also collaborate with healthcare providers to develop innovative approaches to delivering care such as telemedicine-based addiction treatment programs.

In addition to our research activities, AGSM offers training opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in public health or related fields. We provide mentorship opportunities for undergraduate students through our summer internship program; offer graduate-level courses on topics such as epidemiology and biostatistics; and provide postdoctoral fellowships for early-career researchers looking to gain experience working on large-scale projects.

Overall, AGSM is committed to advancing knowledge about substance abuse through rigorous scientific inquiry. Our goal is not only to generate new insights but also translate these findings into meaningful action that can improve public health outcomes around the world.
